Like a mosaic, a picture consisting of many small parts, a student's life in a year is made up of many small events. Each event is an essential part of the pattern of a meaningful school year. Knowledge is the most important part in the student's mosaic. It tempts the inquiring mind and satisfies it. Thus, with knowledge he begins to create the type of person he will be in the future. Athletics is the back-bone of school spirit. Without this vital part the student mosaic is not complete. Sports promote loyalty, spirit and sportsmanship. This healthy entertainment benefits both the participant and spectator. To be a real part of a school one must take part in its activities. Our mosaic of student life needs activities to be complete. Each student who takes part in some activity adds to this mosaic. When each part of the mosaic is formed and inlaid the result is one memorable year. Here is the picture as your 1962 Annual Staff saw it . .. Weather adds a piece to the student mosaic. This winter, student life was pleasantly and unexpectedly changed by the arrival of snow which blanketed the campus and pelted classroom windows. Inside, excited students watched the flakes fall and planned for fun in a new and unusual winter wonderland. Knowledge, the largest and most vital piece in the student mosaic, dominates the classroom and provides to the questioning mind its only satisfaction. Friendship which begins and completes the student mosaic is also an integral part in the mosaic of adulthood. 6 Retiring Teachers Mrs. Anne Richards graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1920. Coming to Portland in 1943, she taught at Jefferson until 1946 when she was transferred to Roosevelt. She began teaching Latin in the portables or chicken coop , and later taught Spanish, which she teaches at present. Mrs. Richards was the first person to establish a successful language club at Roosevelt. This club, Los Dorados, is still popular among the many Spanish students. Next year, Mrs. Richards plans to spend more time playing her violin. Before teaching she was a professional violinist. Later she hopes to travel. Miss Ruth Worden began her teaching career in 1918 as an elementary teacher in Clatskanie. A graduate of Washington High School, she first taught in the Portland school system in 1920 at Portsmouth Grade School, finally coming to Roosevelt in 1939. At Roosevelt she has taught English and world and American history. She is presently the sophomore girls' counselor and Teddyette advisor. Future plans include traveling — a trip to the Canadian Rockies, Atlantic Sea Coast, and Mount Rushmoor. Closer to home she plans to go to the Shakespeare Festival, the Pendleton Roundup, and the World's Fair in Seattle. 8 'J } ') Mrs. Alice Tompkins graduated from Oregon State College in 1918. Her first teaching assignment was in Battleground, Washington. In 1938 she came to Portland and taught at Jane Adams High School, which no longer exists. Coming to Roosevelt in 1947 she taught home-economics in the portables until the gym wing was built. Mrs. Tompkins has been advisor of the Future Homemakers of America Club. After retirement Mrs. Tompkins wants to go places, work with her flowers, enjoy Oregon weather,, and spend more time with her three children and their families. She is thinking of writing her own personal cook book. Dedication Mr. Ford With sincere appreciation and admiration the 1961-62 Ranger Annual Staff takes pride in dedicating this yearbook to Robert G. Ford, an active member of the Roosevelt Faculty. Coming to us in 1952 from the old Elliot Elementary School, where he taught seven years, Mr. Ford has conducted classes in English and publications. Acting as advisor to the Annual Staff he aided in turning out six books. Due to his supervision the 1956 Ranger took second place nationally. The yearbooks added to Roosevelt's collection under Mr. Ford's advisory are fine examples of his capabilities in the field of publications, and in this spirit of good journalism, we dedicate the 1962 Ranger. 9 Administration DON W. JAMES A word to Roosevelt students from their principal A mosaic such as we find on the cover of this yearbook is composed of patterns which in turn are made up of smaller individual pieces. So it is with a high school. Roosevelt can be said to be comprised of the nearly 1750 individuals who are associated with the school. The faculty, service staffs, departments, classes, teams, clubs, councils, and committees emerge as patterns. When one of these clusters such as the band student council, or an academic class functions in a very effective manner, luster is added to the entire picture. However, do not lose sight of the fact that each individual is in full view at all times. If each of us will do his best to shine brightly, the mosaic that is 10 Roosevelt will, indeed, be magnificent. Mi Leola M. Purpose of the Freshie Parent Tea is to acquaint freshman parents and students with teachers, counselors, and administrators of Roosevelt High School. Greetings are extended to new teachers and their wives and husbands at the Faculty Tea. The Freshman Tea was in the cafeteria September 29, followed by the Faculty Tea October 2, which took place in the social rooms. Both teas are organized by a committee consisting of members of the faculty. Teas are no differont than parties. The men always seem to get together. Mrs. Duncan, Mr. Hoffman, Mr. White, and Mr. Roundtree make their way along the refreshment table. Carol Wick and Lucy Blakeley serve punch to Mrs. Boyington and Mr. Bozich. 24 Traditional Teas Chairman of the committees is Mrs. Morris. Refreshments for the faculty tea were made by Mrs. Tompkins and Mrs. Morris' home economics classes. New teachers at Roosevelt High are: Mr. Melvin H. Patty Carlin, Lucy Blakoloy, Kay DuFrcnc, and Chris Gray serve refreshments to freshmen and their parents, while Miss Schoelcr pours coffee at Roosevelt's annual Freshman-Parent Tea. 25 Interested parents listen to Mr. Durrell explain the varied English program at Roosevelt. Crowd Visits A near capacity crowd of 500 attended Roosevelt's Open House and Dedication of the new wing, November 15 at 7:30 p.m. Sandra Stevenson, Girls' League President, led the flag salute and invocation. Mr. Richard Mears, chairman of the Board of Directors, dedicated the new building followed by Dr. Melvin W. Barnes, Superintendent of Schools. Both men emphasized the necessity of good rooms and good equipment but stated the most important element to education is good teaching. Carole Wyant, senior Teddyette, chats with PTA ladies, who are serving refreshments at Open House. Richard Mears, Board of Directors, dedicates the new building. 26 New Addition They also emphasized that the new wing gives a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction to the Board of Education, parents, and taxpayers. The success of this new building can only be measured by the education of its young people. Parents were then divided into five groups and were shown the new wing. They met with the English, Social Studies, Art, Language, and Music department heads where their respective programs were explained to Parents. Concluding the program the P.T.A. served refreshments in the social rooms. Since 1952 it has been traditionally known as and called the Senior Bench . Nov ten years later the class of 1962 has made an amazing discovery. The alleged Bench doesn't belong to the Senior class at all, but was a gift to the whole school from the graduating class of 1952. It is the decision of the Senior class, however, that this mistake shall remain the mistake of Roosevelt and be called THE SENIOR BENCH, henceforth. 60 Exchange Student Sylvia Rupp camo lo Portland from Switzerland to spend her Senior year at Roosevelt High School. Although she receives no credit for her year here, she considers it valuable experience. Sylvia has a year and a half of school to complete betoro she can attend a Swiss University. 61 SYLVIA RUPP ZURICH. SWITZERLAND Hi. Soon my year in the United States will be over. It will be a sad day when I will have to say good-bye to everybody because 1 wont know if I will ever see you again. But I will never forget you and good old Roosevelt High. I have spent the most exciting and beautiful year with you. Oh. I remember very well the first school day, when I hardly could speak English, and when I kept asking you: Please, speak slowly! Later I learned about all your social activities, and I even saw the first football game in my life. Back in Switzerland I will tell proudly about Roosevelt and its students, and I would like to thank all of you for your friendliness, for your help and your patience with me. I wish Roosevelt, its principal, faculty and student body much luck for the future, and I wish to the next exchange student as wonderful a year as I had. Assemblies are arranged by the assembly committee, a group of several teachers with Mr. Preller as chairman and Mr. James as consultant. The committee plans the time and types of assemblies presented. This year all Pep assemblies were scheduled after seventh period, which was a change from previous years. When an unusual assembly is brought to the committee's attention, it is then often presented to the student body. The two main projects of the committee are the May Fete and Dad's Club Review, both in the Spring. On the left page is pictured a Judo--Karate assembly presented by instructors from the Randori School of Judo and Karate. It was the first time an exhibition of this type had been presented to. In October Mr. Pratt received the invitation. The school board approved the trip, but stated no tax funds would be .available. A determined Roosevelt Student Body and Faculty launched a campaign to earn the necessary $6,000 for the trip. Four big projects were undertaken: a buffet at Safeway, November 4; a pancake breakfast in the Roosevelt cafeteria, November 12; a candy sale; and drum shaped banks placed in Roosevelt school rooms and stores in North Portland. Many businesses, alumni, P.T.A.'s and other Portland schools contributed to the fund. The needed money was earned, and December 28 sixty-six band members, two rally members and eight chaperones boarded three Greyhound buses and headed for San Francisco. Chaperones were Mrs. Regas; Mrs. Roberson; Mrs Boise; Mr. Timmens; Principal Mr. James and his wife,- Vice Principal Miss Craig; and Band Leader Mr. Pratt. Stopping for diner at Blue Gum Lodge near Willows, California, the band arrived that night and checked into the Hotel Drake Wilshire. Two letters from the managers of the Hotel Drake Wilshire and the Blue Gum Lodge praising the band's conduct were received shortly after the students' return. Because more money was donated than was needed for the trip, the band will purchase new band instruments, which are not provided by the school board. The twelve girls and six boys, then appear before the student body to do yells and dances. Six girls and three boys are elected. The Rally Squad must create and maintain school spirit with a winning team or a losing team. They must give and leave a good impression away from their own school. September 16, 1961, students crowded into the Roosevelt cafeteria for the first big dance of the year. The Homecoming Dance, a tradition since 1958, when the jamborees were discontinued, provided an atmosphere of growing excitement for the first football game of the year. During intermission dancers went to the auditorium where the Homecoming Court, Mary Carlin, Linda Ramsby, Mary Tyler, Vicki Karanen and Karrie Kaiyala, was introduced. As each girl's name was called, she was seated. The last to remain standing was recognized as the new Homecoming Queen. Amidst cheers and hand-clapping, David Overby, student body president, crowned Karrie queen. After the court was seated. Coach Wade Patterson presented the 1961 football team. Then the Rally in their new fall outfits led the audience in a few practice yells for the new football season. At the conclusion of the intermission program, everyone returned to the cafeteria to enjoy the remainder of the dance. Students Enjoy Play and Dance Friday, October 13, Roosevelt students attended Necromancy, a combination play and dance which was the first of its kind to appear at Roosevelt. Necromancy was presented in the gym and auditorium from 8:00-11:00 p.m. In line with the superstition that Friday, 13th is an unlucky day, the drama department chose the theme Necromancy which means the art of communicating with the spirits. Mrs. Stocking, drama teacher, commented, I'd like to see such a theatre-dance become an annual affair. The students will decide that. I think it's a lot of fun, and many people can get info the act —nearly 50 students worked on this one. Necromancy was presented by the dramatics classes and members of the stage crew, under the direction of Mr. White, set up the stage props. Proceeds of this theatre-dance went to the drama department account and will be used for other productions. Sharon lasich and Jody Bryant try the pony while other Rooseveltcrs look on. The dance, a tradition at Roosevelt, was first introduced by Al Capp, creator of Lil' Abner, more than twenty years ago. It started as a day when girls could chase boys and still be considered ladies. Later dances became popular to celebrate this day. Karrie Kaiyala and the dance committee headed the affair. The walls were decorated with Dog Patch characters. In keeping with tradition, couples were able to obtain a marriage certificate at the marriage booth. Something new was added this year, a pinata filled with candy. Winners of the balloon dance, Bonnie Burke and Gary Jacobs, received the honor of breaking it. jX) S?ftTcX : 1 j cvfore Comor.im.in, Arvin Luchi, maps a picture of dogpatchers, Larry Sundin and Suzic Brown. Snowflakes and mobiles gaily adorned the gym in which was centered a large snow-covered tree ornamented with lavender bows. To Riches Music was provided by the Van Armitage dance band. Lime punch was served in the social rooms for thirsty dancers. Since this dance is paid for each year by the Dads' Club, there was no admission.
