It has been our privilege to look back into the past as it has been vividly portrayed in the Centennial year, and by so doing we have gained a greater appreciation of our state’s strength. It is with confidence and expectancy that we face a future that holds the answer to our dreams . . . Land of the Empire Builders, we salute you! 3 The Oregon Centennial Rose 1959 introduction courtesy of Peterson Dering, Scappoosc, Oregon 4 Selected as the 1959 Roosevelt Senior Class Flower Sharon, Pat, Marilyn, Kathy, Joyce, Betty, Sharon, DeDe, Judy. York, Principal. Now that the initial excitement over “Celestial Hardware” has somewhat subsided, the business of good education is coming back into focus. We have tremendous pride in the way our students and faculty have responded to the challenges in secondary education. The emphasis has been on all phases of the curriculum so that the course offerings in all departments have improved. 13 Miss Leola M. Craig. It is his job to make reports on the teachers, and to report how the classes arc progressing. Me is in charge of the library services, book-room rentals, A. V. A, Class programs, and schedules. He is a member of the High School Curriculum Council and is the- main supervisor and organizer of the Freshman Class and its activities. Mr. Dean V. Tate. Curriculum Vice-Principal Mr. William L. George Pearson Mike Mam, assistant editor, Mr. Oliver, advisor, Sharon Overby, editor and Phil Hogan, assistant editor discuss their plans for the yearbook. tne gevjeifcwc 5CAFF Donna MacKcnzic and Carolyn Staley, the bookkeepers, keep things straight. Joan Gortmaker, Claudia Crain, Ron Kirkelie, Buddy Lester and Bob Struthers work on their sections. I his year, as usual, was a hectic one with many new and exciting experiences for all of the 1958-1959 Yearbook Staff. Figuring out original layouts, making up dummy books, cutting out and pasting up pictures took up much of the class hour for this year’s annual staff. Many students spent tedious hours burning the midnight oil working on their individual sections. The ad staff worked especially hard selling ads, working out money-making projects, and figuring up the budget. With Mr. Oliver as advisor and Sharon Overby as editor, and with a very fine staff, there were many jobs worthy of the accolade: “well done.” TW£ HCAtVSCHC V6 CrJtVL Linda Matson, Donna MacKonzic. Judy Robertson, Ethel Hollis, Carolyn Staley, and Bonita Barney plan their layouts. Bonnie Carpentar and Kay Powers, business managers, plan the budget for the yearbook. 129 Fun and work combine themselves easily in this unusual class. Many hours are spent- out of class writing stories, planning pages, going to the printers, and getting advertisements, but the tedious tasks arc rewarded in the satisfaction of a job well done. Co-operation is stressed since the sixteen mambers must work closely to meet the bi-monthly deadlines. Under the supervision of Mr. Robert Bowman, and leadership of Kay Fraser, fall editor and Dick LcBlond, spring editor, an “exceptionally fine” Roosevelt Ranger has been published. Judy Patrick, Lola Scheaffer, and Jean Sundquist talk over possible layouts. managers, compare books. 130 Mr. Bowman, Kay Fraser, fall editor, and Dick LeBlond, fall editor, make plans for the issue. Properties chairman Carlenc Sundberg had a few questions of her own; Where does one find a candy dish in the shape of a skull, and who has a hand printing press?”—to name only two. Many rehearsals later the cast was ready to vouch, at least, for the sanity of the lovable Sycamofe family, but Chairman Sundberg was nervously beginning to examine her scalp for the first signs of gray hair. Thanks to the generous sup| ort of the Student Body and the Faculty (a special tribute to Mr. Marsubian and Mr. Durrell) this play was a tremendous success. Assistant Director was I.inday Aydelott and Stage Manager was Rita Richardson. Cast: Mildred Shiaeh. Sharon Loveland. Phyllis Chapman. Harold Gable. Bob Dawson. George Gullixson. Sam Bell. STAGE CREW Mr. Robert Lewis, drama director. The house lights dim and the curtain opens. On the stage is a brightly lit living room, with perhaps a beam of sunlight shining through a window. Behind the window the pale blue of an of the scene. The telephone rings once, twice— afternoon sky helps set the locale and the time and as Mrs. Jones picks up the receiver the third ring is cut short. Off stage a door opens and closes and someone calls. “Is anybody home? The audience relaxes, ready to enjoy the skillful presentation of a “Slice of Life.” If the lighting effects arc right for the scene, and if the sounds of the telephone and the door are timed perfectly with the action on the stage many of the audience are not conscious of the presence of the stage crew. But the two or three members of that stage crew started their work at least a week bfore the performance. They mounted that special spot light which threw the “sunlight” through the window, and they set up the lights for the blue backing which represents the sky. They spent many hours at rehearsal setting the timing for that telephone ring and for the door off stage. The stage crew at Roosevelt High operates the intricate twenty-four-circuit switchboard and provides special effects backstage for all assemblies and evening performances in the auditorium. as well as for plays. The success of every presentation on the stage depends upon their alert and skillful performance of duty. Dave Anderson and Jack Fox working control panel for lights. 132 DRAMA Richard Norton. The right half of the playing area was elevated to provide a split level living room-dining room. Constructed by Mr. White’s stage craft class, the parallels, or folding platforms used for the elevation are expected to be useful for future productions. Thirty-eight students tried out for the fifteen roles in “Melody Jones. the largest number of hopefuls to appear at a play tryout for the past two years. VARSITY SEASON SUMMARY r K Doji Knight breaks through the Jeff line for a short gain. Roosevelt High School completed their most successful football season in the history of the school. Our first game which was with Cleveland was won by us 14-7, then the next game was the fatal one with Jefferson which we lost 47-0. From then on Roosevelt went full blast averaging 25 points per game for the rest of the season. The final standings were 8 wins and 1 loss and second place in the P. I. L. Our only loss was suffered at the hands of Jefferson who, by the way, have defeated all comers by a 40 point average, and are rated first in the state. Outstanding players on the team were A1 Papworth, All-City, Don Knight and Jack Newberry, All-City second string. Rhy Fuller and Mike O’llearnc were also very important in our taking second place. Our hats are off to the coaching staff of the team under the able leadership of Mr. Man.-Cross and his assistant Mr. Ray O’Dell, line FRESHMAN FOOTBALL Row I, left to right: Pal Smith. Arthur Hoyt. FRESHMAN FOOTBALL SEASON SUMMARY The Frosh football season was made up of a series of black defeats with an optimistic note stmek only in the last two games. A 7-7 tic with Lincoln opened the season followed by losses to Wilson, Washington and Grant. Playing undefeated Madison the Frosh got the “feel” of the game, running up more yardage than any other team in the city had been able to do. Sparked by this new-found ability they came within an ace of beating Franklin in the season’s finale. Big Jim Godfrey was named captain by the team and must be chosen as leading contributor in ground gaining as fullback a$ well as Staunch defensive lineback'cF. J. V. The first two ball games were lost from lack of experience. Then the team started to jell and they began to block and tackle. The next four ball games were won quite easily and the squad looked like a football team. Our blocking was crisp and the tackling was jarring. Wc ended the season with a 4 won and 3 lost record. I think that quite a few of the J.V.’s of this year will become good Varsity football players. There were several good linemen. Dave Cox, Bill Carlson, Tim Edgmond, Ralph Redding, Allan Gooch, Dave Phillips, to name just a few; Some of the good backs were 'lorn Martin, quarterback, IJob Eakin, left half and Fred Bauer and Larry Inskeep at the full . back spot. I was proud of the way the l oys developed a team spirit MM and think they will carry on a good fighting spirit for future kooscvclt teams. Left to Right: Gene Palmer, Ray Fuller. Mike Schrunk. Lovinc Briggs, Dave Phillips, Harold Bishop. Ron Kirkclie, Ted Young. Don Salyers. Jim Olson, Norm Redbird, Jo -Vanalistine. Front center: Coach Gronquist. The Teds this year didn’t win like the team did last season nor did we go to State. We had a young team with plenty of speed and hustle, and most of the time a good team to watch. Jim Olson received wide coverage from both the Journal and Oregonian newspapers on his high scoring. He led the city race up until the final two weeks of the season in which he dropped to third. Mike Schrunk came along and took up where Jim left off for the 'Feds’ scoring. Harold Bishop and Ron Kirkclie helped the team greatly by sweeping the boards throughout the season. Don Salyers and Norm Redbird are two juniors who helped all the way and will be a tremendous help next year. For a future team we hope they all will gain weight and height and keep the hustle up for a state tournament berth in the 1960 season. Boys like Myron Meifert, Ralph Kruhl, in the sprints, A1 Gooch in broad jump and javelin, Bob Brooks, Leonard Blix in the hurdles, Carl Reims, Don Chewning in the distance races and Bob Eakin in the 440 worked hard to make the season a success. There were other boys that turned out and worked just as hard, but could not make the team, but should be given credit for their effort and desire to participate. The frosh had an unsuccessful season, but did prove that they could complete and have a desire to win. Their defeat of Washington proved that they liked the sweet taste of victory. There arc several boys that will prove themselves in track before they graduate. James Bird clears high hurdle. Jack Newberry and Dirk Heider in 220. ■ 168 ■ PRESEASONAL Roosrvrlt v . There were two juniors, Don Chewning and John Gerdes; and four sophomores, Larry Burk, Bruce Turner, Carl Reimers. and Richard Anderson. This was a good underclassman team and we anticipate good teams in the following years. The junior varsity was composed of five sophomores and one freshman. Gary Johnson, a freshman of the junior varsitv. appeared in every time trial a vl every meet. This junior varsity will surely make substan ?' competition for the varsity rand:da es in the coming seasons. A junior varsity race over a one and one-quarter-mile course, or a varsity race of from 1.8 miles to two miles, is a real proving oune for boys who like conditioning and competition for the varsity in the coming seasons. Petite Susan Kraft was chosen queen, and Nancy Robinson and Carol Linquist were chosen as princesses for the juniors. Sandra April and Gail Ramseth were elected as the “sophomore” princesses. JJn A hush of sadness fell on an audience of music lovers as the unended notes of “Starlit Fantasy” brought a tragic close to our beloved band director’s career. In the previous assembly Mr. Preston had dedicated this beautiful piece to the Senior class in grateful acknowledgment of their gift of band stand lights which pleased him so much. To all who have passed through the halls of Roosevelt, the influence of Mr. Preston has made an impact; to the puzzled freshman who turned to him for that friendly understanding pat on the back—to the most outstanding musician in the school—Mr. Preston was a symbol of a real teacher. We arc saddened, as friends and relatives always are, when the passing of someone dear, deprives us of the joy of sharing our sorrow and happiness with him. When that pain fades, in its place will come the realization that nothing good really dies: for it lives on in the hearts of all those who care and to those of us who were privileged to know Verne Preston that good will be expressed in a hundred ways—through the appreciation of music, so much a part of Mr. Preston’s life, through the happy comments we make as we remember the humor that was our Mr. Preston—and through the success of the st udents and his children as they become his tangible link to our every day life.
