!? presented by ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY OF ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL Portland, Oregon DEDICATION The 1951 yearbook is dedicated not just to two men, Rollie Rourke and Mike DeLotto, but rather to the spirit they began and the determination they leave to Roosevelt High. It was largely through the efforts of these two coaches that Roosevelt has gained her place in the sun. Roosevelt was for years and years the under dog in city competition, despite the efforts of many good coaches who preceded them. It fell to Mr. Rourke and Mr. DeLotto to start us on our winning ways and establish in the minds of the teams in other schools the idea that Roosevelt finishes in the top bracket. So thoroughly has this been accomplished that today any Roosevelt team commands a healthy respect from its rivals. Mr. DeLotto, in three years as head football coach, took us to within one game of city championship. His teams were well coached and it is said that pound for pound he got more from his boys than any coach in the city. Mr. Rourke rescued us from oblivion in the field of basketball—his career, interrupted by service in World War II, is one any school would be proud to own. After gaining city championship in 1947, he then took his team to the state tournament and returned with the fifth place cup. In 1948 he came back with an almost inexperienced team and placed third in the city. In 1949 again co-city champs and the thrill of Roosevelt's basketball history—state championship. In 1950 things really looked black at Roosevelt for he had only two players left from the state championship team; but with a determination few men possess, he whipped that green crew into another city championship and a third place state winner. In baseball, which he also coached, the picture is even better. In 1947, they were fourth, in 1948, third place in city and for two years, 1949 and 1950, both city and state champions. Few schools can equal that record. No wonder, after such performances in the past five years. Roosevelt now feels she has a standard to maintain, and so our thanks to these two men who played such an important part in helping us achieve such a state of mind. LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE AT ROOSEVELT Because most of us live in the present, it is sometimes difficult to take a long range view of the progress that has been made and that we are making today. It is good, however, to take stock occasionally and to see where we have been and in what direction we are going. For that reason, the RANGER would like to review some of the steps that have been taken as we have developed these past twenty-eight years. In nineteen hundred twenty-three, three hundred six students and a staff of twelve teachers moved into a brand new building and had no difficulty hiding from each other; in fact, it is said that they were lost in so big a building. Some rooms were not even used! Imagine so much space when today two, three, and even four teachers share the same room. There were no lockers in the halls; all were in rooms 109 and 127. Such bliss—everyone with his own private locker! Since the auditorium wing was not built all assemblies were held in the gymnasium. The seniors had their graduation exercises there, too. And of all things, the cafeterie was located in what we now called the locker rooms. Yes, they had locker rooms but they were found in what is now the boiler house. Not only was the interior different, but the school grounds and the surrounding neighborhood had a different appearance also. To the east across Ida Street was all woods and only a few houses dotted the landscape in our immediate vicinity. Housing areas were unknown and St. Johns was miles and miles from most city activity. Of course, there were no portables; houses were built on our baseball diamond; tennis courts, track field, and football turf were possessions good old Roosevelt didn't own. From such a humble beginning, Roosevelt has grown until today we have a student body of nearly fourteen hundred, a faculty and administrative staff of sixty, and scarcely enough space to take a deep breath. We now hold our heads high in city competition for we have the best band in the city. True, we are prejudiced, but take a look as they parade onto the field at the next football jamboree. What band is better looking or plays better than ours? We'll stack our choir with the best in the city; if you don't believe us, attend the spring festival any year and find a more distinguished looking high school group or one that sings any better. Then there's the athletic program. There was a time when city schools figured there was one school they could always beat. Yes, sad to relate—Roosevelt. That’s not true anymore. Schools who sell us short learn to regret it, and sports writers go out on a limb when they relegate us to the bottom rung. We have our share of graduates who leave our portals and continue their successes in college, business, and the armed services. Not only do we have a beautiful campus, one of the best football stadiums in the city, a track where most schools like to hold their meets because it is so well kept, an excellent baseball daimond with good seating capacity, but we are soon to have one of the most modern gymnasiums in the state. Roosevelt High has traveled far; she has still more territory to conquer and new fields to explore. We who belong to the present join those who had a part in the past—to salute the Roosevelt of the future. May she ever hold her head high in school spirit, scholarship, and good citizenship. The Teds put everything they had into every game they played. In the championship game they played their hearts out and lost. A team cannot win all the time. That loss has put determination into next year's squad, and that determination will help them on to victory next fall. It is hard to name the outstanding players, for all are outstanding in some way. However, here are a few of the truly outstanding ones: speedy half-backs Andersen and Lofland, Bob Gregory, guard; Tex Kirkendall, full-back; and the guy that has put inspiration into every player on the team. Marv Stevenson, tackle and winner of the Hal York Trophy. Roosevelt’s football turf will bid farewell to a number of graduates this year. They are: Marv Stevenson, Bill Steinfeld, Darris Bruhn, Dwaine Owens, Neil Andersen, and Bob Gregory. The Ted sports department has come a long way from the victory-less days of yesteryear to the championship contenders of today. The spirit of the student body has done this. No one can deny this if he happened to attend the Grant and Jefferson games. For the student body proved that they do have spirit to the team and to themselves. Mike DeLotto has bid farewell to Roosevelt and with him go the respect and good wishes of this school. BASKETBALL The curtain arose on the 1951 prep basketball scene with the defending city champs of Roosevelt High School sporting one lone returnee from the squad that last year nailed down third place in the State Basketball Tourney. Picked for a last place finish by pre-season forecasters, the Teds put on a display of fight and spirit and along with a determination to win, emerged from their season tussels sporting a winless record of seven-seven to tie Grant for fourth place in the city league. OW school is out and summer’s here, Bright and warm and glad, A time we thought would feel so good Because we’d be a grad (Or hoped we would), but now we feel Strangely sad........ —V. C. Much of the team's success is owed to Marv Rasmussen, who replaced Rollie Rourke as head basketball coach for the Teddies. Coach Rasmussen built his hustlin' squad around Ron Bottler, who was the only regular returning from last year's team. Switching Ron from center post to a forward position, he used Dick Midkiff at center and teamed Jim Barnett and Tex Kirkendall for a favorable guard combination. George LaValley rounded out the starting five by pairing with Bottler at the forward positions. Each game proved a thriller for the Teds with all the city team boasting considerable strength. Some of the games played were decided by just a few points and in all their games the Teds were neither decisively beaten nor scored an easy win. With the season over, Roosevelt placed Ron Bottler, who played alternately at forward and center positions, on the mythical All-City quintet. Out of the squad that finished fourth this year there will be nine eligible to play next year. This will make the Rough Riders a potent outfit and a strong contender for the title. Lincoln 3 8 Washington 15 13 Benson 5 6 .Cleveland 2 BASEBALL Roosevelt's '51 baseball team came to bat at the start of the season with a city and state title to defend and only four returning lettermen on the team. And as usual, for this sport's year, they were picked for a cellar finish by sports-writers but as the season progressed the other teams learned that Roosevelt wouldn't give up her crown without a fight. With the season over half over as this is written, the Ted batmen have won five games as against three losses and are now tied with Washington for second place. The Teds owe much of their success this season to their new coach, Marv Rasmussen, who replaced Rollie Rourke as baseball mentor, and the tremendous hitting power the team has exhibited so far. The squad now has a team average of .319. Some of the heavy hitters on the squad are: Ron Bottler, veteran catcher, with a .450 batting average; Harv Neffendorf, Ted infielder. sporting an average of .333; and Tex Kirkendall with an average of .375; Dick Midkiff, .356 and Vernon Marshall, .321. The way the season has been progressing so far it looks as though one of our biggest losses will be Victor Vick, who has been the mainstay for the pitching staff, and another senior, Dick Walton, who has done a good job for us, too. This year's team will lose only five players from their roster by graduation so the Ted baseball team next year will be power-packed. TRACK This year's track team at Roosevelt was picked for high finish at the first of the season because of their second place finish last year and the returning lettermen from that squad. With the track season almost over it looks as if the Ted cindermen will bear out that preseason rating as the Teds placed second in the annual city relays held April 13 with the Teds taking three first places in the event. At that meet, the Ted relay team, composed of Louie Lofland, Ken Deans, Bill Steinfeld, and Neil Anderson came close to breaking the record for the 440 relay by making it in 44:7 as compared to the record 44:2 set in 1938 by Jefferson. In the annual Hayward Relays held at Eugene on April 28, the Ted cindermen failed to place in the top five places but managed to nail down eighth spot by scoring 18 points. Track coach. Mason McCoy, is in his sixth season as head cinder coach at Roosevelt. Graduation will take most of this year's stars. Some of them are; Neil Anderson, Bill Steinfeld, Luther Knight, Duane Owens, Bob Gregory and Laten Frawley. In this year's minor sports the Teds fared pretty well with the bowling team in the fall taking second place in the city loop and the hockey team ending their season in a tie.
