CHICAGO the idea of going forward with determination for the common good became a basic Amer- ican principle. Down through the years to this century of miracles, other Americans have kept pushing forward toward a fuller and more satisfying life for all. Soon it will be our turn as the citizens of tomorrow to make our contributions to the improvement of our way of life. We have no thought of standing still. Ours is a heritage of achieve- ment and progress. It is our intention to guard it. For this reason, we have adopted as the theme of our Log . . RIDING ON. Here at Roosevelt our stay has been made easier and more pleasant for each and every one of us by our friend and principal, Mr. Iohn L. O'Brien. When the day was gloomy and depressing, we could not help but be cheered by his friendly and comforting smile which to us has come to symbolize the spirit of our high school. No matter how busy he was, he always found time to help iron out the crises in our lives, his door was ever the gateway to understanding and encouragement. To say thank you is meaningless, for it fails to express our true feeling of gratitude. This we can do only as we RIDE ON over our chosen paths of life by practising the fundamentals of good citizenship we learned under the in- spiring leadership of Roosevelt's First Citizen, who practises twenty-four hours a day what he frequently preached in one minute. mr. yoAn Ogien 15 OOJQUQA gCLCbl,Ay IOHN L. Where formerly our course was marked out for us, we now were expected to make our own choice and proceed at our own rate of speed. Many of us had defin- ite destinations in mind, but the eagerness of exploration led us to investigate new trails and frequently to change our goals. Now as graduates we look back. We have worked and played, gained fundamental knowl- edge and skills, acquired standards of value, and made friends among teachers and students. Happy memories and great expectations are ours. Once again we change our pace and go .... RIDING ON. During the time we, the Class of Ianuary, 1951, have spent at Roosevelt, we have learned valuable lessons we shall find useful throughout our adult lives. Getting along with people is the most important of these. For four years we have worked and played together, shared pleasure and disappointment, success and failure. Out of these shared experiences we have gained tolerance and understanding, and a respect for the ability of others. After we leave Roosevelt and begin to apply our knowledge to the endless problems we are sure to meet, we will appreciate more fully the experience in group living which our high school gave to us. Even now we know that with- out ability to get along with people there can be no RIDING ON to a suc- cessful future. 55 BARBARA ADLER Mixed Chorus G.A.A. As fresh- men we entered Roosevelt mere tender feet. Slowly but surely, with the aid of friend- ly teachers, we got our feet in the stirrups of early prob- lems and conquered them. Then, firmly mounted, with some little horse sense, we began trotting along the path of high school life. Ah, the friends we made, and the knowledge we gained! On- ward, forward, we rode, pulling at the reigns and slowing our pace to enjoy more of the activities of high school life. Now we are ready to leave Roosevelt. We are going to use the many tricks of horsemanship we learned here, and perhaps acquire new ones. The open road lies ahead of us, and on it the unlimited opportunities of this America. Have you always admired someone who is able to play a musical instrument? The Roosevelt Symphonic Orchestra offers to any student an opportunity to become a future concert artist. Under the direction of lohn P. Hamilton, this organization not only trains the student in the use of his instrument but also develops a greater appreciation of this fine art. The orchestra often acts as a stepping stone to positions in professional orchestras. for by enabling its students to gain experience in group partici- pation, it develops the talents of each of its members. The group is a workshop of aspiring musicians. lt is a center of activity as its eager members practice for their forthcoming performances. Under the supervision of its officers, the activities of this organization are planned and produced, bringing about the harmonious accomplishments of which this school is so proud. 78 m me . is QA WX ik K f ,W 1 ,x X, , Wx . This group is under the able direction of Miss Helen P. Iohnson. You can be sure that whenever there is a performance given by the Girls' Chorus, all of Roosevelt is certain to turn out. The girls are known for their excellent interpretations of line music and their entertaining programs. Une of their recent presentations was The Lad from Stratford, scenes from which are pictured above. Every girl in the chorus took a hand in preparing the lavish cos- tumes and scenery. This production is one more good example that there is more to belonging to the chorus than just singing. 82 W fr - ' -2 Y H+ X - A 1 Q .. t 'Q '- 'Yi g - 2 .. r ix, M . Xxx f N. ' A ' 'Q Q . At the present time, a new system of student government is being initiated at Roosevelt under the capable sponsorship of Mr. Iohn P. Hamilton. The Council encourages student interest and participation and provides for better student-teacher relationships. Students are given the opportun- ity to discuss pertinent problems confronting the school, to plan activities, and to put them into operation. This organization is composed of division delegates, voicing the opinions and suggestions of their respective divisions at meetings. Upon returning from meetings, the representatives report the plans of the Council. By this method the entire student body is kept informed. 85 an Onfy govern y eruing , W . . . FACULTY SPONSORS D. New memebers, who must be in either their junior or senior year. were inducted at a special assembly. A group known as The Owls has been organized to assist students who need special attention in any subject. Besides this project, there are the responsibilities of stamping course books and checking service to determine eligibility. These are the tasks of the National Honor Society Committee. This group is not only engaged in scholastic activities, but is also con- cerned with the social life of its members. A committee, headed by the vice- president, prepares social events. Though the quality of presentation and the objectives to be accomplished remain the same, it has been necessary to revise the routines used in order to keep pace with the changing system of government at Roosevelt. Newest and most popular addition to the Bureau is the Northwestern University-sponsored l'lVlasque and Gavel, which awards recognition to worthy students who have shown growth and excellence in various speech functions. Up to now, outstanding service has been rewarded with a speakers letter: but under the 'AlVlasque and Gavel, any type of work, with proven quality, inside or outside school, is accepted as a sound basis of recognition. Any person who sports the distinguished A'Masque and Gavel pin is both honored for and proud of his service to Roosevelt and the community. It is a proven fact that not all good speakers are good writers. Hence, it has been necessary, in order to fulfill the needs of Roosevelt, to organize a writers' group within the Bureau. Speeches coming from this group, with the approval of its sponsor. are guaranteed to bring all points of information to students and other listeners in as interesting a way as possible. For example, last season the Senior mermen collected nine wins against two losses: both losses were to Lane Tech, the state champion. To crown their successes, the Rough Riders placed fourth in the city. The Iunior group of the Roosevelt High School swim team is composed of boys 16 and under. Coach Ralph Marx explains that the Iunior squad is not a preparatory group for the Seniors. It holds meets of its own and receives a ranking in the city as does its elder brother. Without a doubt, the Boys' Lifeguards are outstanding among the unsung workers of this school. These boys are on duty every swimming period: with- out their invaluable aid, it would be impossible to conduct the swimming classes. Besides providing for the safety of the students, these lifeguards serve as assistant instructors.
