D., the rocket-ship Ambition, carrying 309 passengers under the standard Knowledge, set out in pursuit of education to be found on the planet Graduation, across the 'heavens Roosevelt. The first stop on the journey was the planet Freshmanius where we met our guides, the Faculty, under the capable leadership of the King of Heavens, James T. Gaffney. Here we were greeted with a huge reception, where the band blared and numerous speakers assured us of our wlcome, informing us of the many experiences that awaited us on our journey through the sky. Here we met Athleticus, the Bandsmen, and the Choristers. We also met the loyal subjects of the planet king: Algebra, English, Science, and those children of Language: Latin, German, French, and Spanish. These demanded that a few of us tarry with them a little longer while the rest of us flew merrily on to Sophomoria, a neighboring planet. Here they gave us a great feast, and we, as the guests of honor, were introduced to the Choir Men and the Orchestralians, whose leader was that famous planet-man, Erhardt Bergstrasser. To make our stay more pleasant our hosts staged for us The Riddle of Isis , which certainly served its purpose. In addition to the subjects, who were kinsme-n of the Freshmanians, we met the most important men of this planet, namely, Geometry, History, and Civics. Wfe had now completed one-half of our journey, pleased with what had gone before, anxious to learn what lay ahead. The next planet we encountered, one bringing us to the upper heavens, was Jun- iorius. Here Athleticus, whom we had met before, introduced us to his proteges, the members of the Ballius family: Basket, Fo-ot, Base, and Volley. Our old friend, Mr. Bergstrasser, now invited some of us to take major parts in his grand spectacles, Ghonita', and t'The Mikadof' Among those invited were Samuel Weissbuch, Herbert Edelman, and George Goebel. We finally reached the last lap of our journey, Seniorus. We had become thoroughly acquainted with our course in the heavens, and our ship seemed to be safely directed toward our ultimate goal, Graduation. Doyle Gray became editor of the Heavens news- paper, and Bill Watson took over the reins of the Leading Sun, while others of us attained importa-nt positions. Our prominence was due to the fact that Seniorius was the most important planet in Roosevelt, and those of us having the perseverance and ability to reach it with some distinction were in the strongest light that the stars gave forth. Leaving Seniorius we donned Cap and Gown, and, to the stately notes of Pomp and Circumstancef, entered the harbor of our long-sought goal. Our four-year journey was completed. With diploma in hand we set out upon the still longer journey of life. LILLIAN SORKIN JEANNETTE ROBIN LAVERNE ERICKSON RALPH SUSMAN 32 Q J,LOTl-I I AN ggaesmseac :II V ,,J:. ,V.,,, ,.,.,,. The huge mob assembled at the Stadium shouted itself hoarse as Leonard Brown, mayor of Chicago, introduced the presidential nominee of the Republican party, the Honorable Herbert Edelman, Governor of Illinois. On the platform, also, were Thomas Fitzpatrick, stateis attorney, who had tackled the big problem of kicking corrupt prac- tices out of politics, and Benjamin Gdalman, Irving Stolar, and Harold Dubow, who are following the right track and running for county ofhces. Glancing over the cheering crowd, we notice Warren Plath, magician, famous for performing the very difhcult feat of drawing money from a bank, Beatrice caddick, artist, whose originals are on exhibit in the Rogues! Gallery, Philip Baum and Marvin Paul, reknowned criminologists, who have recently completed a text entitled, How to Five Finger with Four Fingersn, Herman Snyder, research worker in straight lines, who solved the eternal problem of making both ends meet, and that pretty widow, Muriel Lehman. Playing Romeo to Muriel is handsome Seymour DeKoven, current movie idol. Occupying a nearby seat in the immense auditorium is Jeanette Robin, notorious for her many marriages, who is 'lchirpingv to that well-known man about town, Leon Glassner, recently named the world's most eligible bachelor by Evelyn Spector, glamor- ous movie queen. Present also are Alice Humecki, internationally known p'hysician, and James White, leading tenor of the Metropolitan Opera Company. With these two are Samuel Ronald Weissbuch, greatest interpreter of Shakespearean roles in the contemporary theatre, A1 Freedman, conductor of the hottest little band in town, and Roselyn Leibovitz, secre- tary to the Honorable Mr. Edelman. In the balcony are seated still more. celebrities. In a box to the left of the stage are Sophie Donine, concert pianist, Peggy Schiller, noted psychiatrist, whose I. is higher than Professor Einstein's, and Irene Grabowicz, highest paid model on Broadway. To the right are Irving Kossy, sports announcer, Lilliam Sorkin, author of this year's Pulitzer Prize -novel, Harvey Nathanson, Alfred Isaacson, Julian Kanner and Marshall Dubin, who are engaged in writing the unwritten law, and Lorraine Barsella, who has the distinction of being the only woman ever allowed to play baseball on the House of David nine. Behi-nd them are Norma Cristol, dramatic art instructress, Marjorie Schulz who, along with Sidney Shultz, forms the graceful dance team known as Schultz and Like- wisen, Beverly Jacobson, stylist, who conducts a column in a local paper called Design For a Living , and Virginia Wood, premiere danseuse of the Ballet Russe. Henrietta Chern, supervisor of a home for widows and orphans of Roosevelt grad- uates, Arthur Fingerhut, little big shota' in local political affairs, Doyle Gray, Olympic swimmer, and his pretty wife, Virginia Pomazal, are also in the audience. With the Grays are a group of former Roosevelt scientists: James Weiner, LaVerne Erickson, Carl Poch, Annette Rieger, and Robert Baum, who have remained together profes- sionally at the Static Stabilizer of Statistics Institute where they computed that three- fourths of the mice in half the world have at some time or another grown three-inch tails. LaVerne is talking to William Watson, the well-known jockey, who is accom- panied by a dazzling red head. Sitting near Big Bill are Verna Karas, the outstanding beauty of this fair land, and often referred to as the best-dressed woman in the country, Virginia Andresen, cham- pion swimmer, and that infamous trio composed of Irving Kleiman, Eli Mayzel, and the debonair Harold Rosenthal. Irv is the brain, Eli the stooge, and Harold the dandy of the outht. That empty seat beside Vera is being reserved for Bill Benziger, land- scape gardener, who is an authority on how to adorn a football field by scientific methods. We also see Elaine Greenberg, she who introduced spit curls to the Fiji Islands, Sharlee Friedman, concocter offpink fudge, and Melvin Lowe, professor of ways and means of wasting time, seated nearby. The faces of George Cierny, winner of an international pie-eating contest, Lillian 36 I Cramer, chorus girlg and Minerva Weiner, che Hrst lady in this land to start wearing eyebrows which form a semi-circle, can also be seen. But wait! 'iCurly is commencing to speak!! He states, I want, to begin with, to give my reasons for advocating the QS'hare-the-Wforkl plan put forward by my colleague, George Goebel. The object of this organization is to promote good sportsmanship and interest in athletics, and to aid the athletic department with tournaments and intra-mural sports. As a part of this program, the RH Club has prohibited the wearing of any letters other than those of Roosevelt. The R Club has successfully fulfilled its aims by sponsoring track, basketball, and swimming tournaments, all of which were planned and guided by the club sponsor, Mr. Seyller. The R Club closes each semester with a banquet for its members. 44 2' Qi.. ' Lightweight Basketball Team Second Rowell. Feinerman, L. Schechter, A. Pedicini, B. Schneider, C. Sherman, M. Shanker. Muriel Kramer The present Student Council at Roosevelt is divided into five parts: the four sectional groups, freshmen, sophomore, Ajunior, and senior, and the Supreme Council, which consists of delegates from the sectional councils and from the various clubs and organi- zations of the school. E Concerns of the individual classes are taken care of at the sectional council meeti-ngs. If it is believed that something of moment to a particular group 'has school-Wide significance, it is carried to the Supreme Council by the two delegates from the sectional group concerned. Here it is discussed and such action as the Supreme Council deems wise is taken. This system has proved highly successful because it gives every group an equal opportunity to express its opinion. To develop an honor point system enabling students to procure RU letters for out- standing achievement in extra-curricular activities was the principal aim of the Student Council this semester. To reorganize the various clubs a-nd assign printed charters to those which proved to be in good standing was another important objective. The reorganization and chartering of the various school organizations was carried out successfully. An honor point system, however, was not completed, for a delay was caused by a question which arose relative to hall guard duty. VVhether to give credit or honor points for such service is the issue at present. To settle the point to the satisfaction of all concerned will become the duty of the next Council, which will work, as the present one has, to secure the greatest good for the majority of the students at Roosevelt. 50 Third Row-G. Its activities, made possible by dues, are varied and numerous. An entertainment of a cultural nature is given during the second quarter of each semester for the beneht of all members. Closely following come the Freshman-Sophomore and Junior-Senior socials. The close alliance of the Civics Club with the Student Council enables the school, as a Whole, to enjoy much that would otherwise be impossible because of lack of funds. With the Hnancial aid of the Civics Club, extra-curricular activities too numerous to mention are carried on. Among these is the Student Council Conference Day, which is held yearly at Roosevelt under the auspices of both organizations. The Civics Club is also directly responsible for many of the assemblies, notably the Lincoln-Washington, Memorial, and Armistice programs. It is gover-ned by a board of seven students, elected by the student body. It is deemed an honor, indeed, to be an official of a club which is continually proving its worth in student affairs. Hjertstedt, drawing instructor, formed the organization at Roose- velt High School, in March, 1928, with the aid of his pupils. His plan was the exchange of mechanical and architectural drawings with students of secondary schools through- out the world. The exchange has succeeded in helping to bring about international understanding through the medium of the school, and thus develop toward the people of other coun- tries a spirit of tolerance and friendly co-operation. Leaders in all walks of life have realized the importance of the organization's work, and have commended Mr. Hjertstedt. Publications have given much helpful publicity. Exhibits have been set up all over the world. More important, art students of all nations have gained the benent of exchanging work, and thereby promoted the spirit of fellow- ship so necessary to international amity between the world's future citizens. Minerva Weiner, Hall Guard members make up one of the most important groups at Roosevelt. This organization was started at Hibbard about fourteen years ago by Mr. E. H. Schulz, Who has been the faculty adviser ever since. The hall guards have the important duty of directing all fire drills. They are also responsible for the general order in the corri- dors throughout the school day and for that i-n the lunchroom during the lunch periods. The officials of the system act as guards on duty at all assemblies. A chief who is a junior fire marshal is the head executive. I-le works in cooperation with two assistant chiefs, a boy and a girl. Sidney Schultz holds the chief officer at the present time, while Margie Schulz and Ralph Susman are his assistants. An Associate Assistant Chief, Minerva Weiner, has been added to the force this semester. There are also two secretaries, Catherine Putinik and Betty Smith, who record the daily marks of the guards and issue the grades at the end of the semester. Each period is super- vised by a captain and three lieutenants, one for each floor. The entire responsibility for the efhcient functioning of the system does not rest upon the shoulders of one person, but is divided among the members. With the help of the student body, the hall guards have been able to build up one of the finest systems in the city. 54 Hall Guards Fifth Row-T. Sitnick, E. Bichel, L. Detker, R. Broch, R. Jur, G. A Girl Reserve is one constantly storing up or reserving those qualities and attitudes which will better enable her to find and fill her place in her world. The Girl Reserve symbol is a triangle within a circle. The triangle represents the three-sided life of the individual: intellectual, spiritual, and social. The circle is the world in which she lives. As she, by her triangle, expands, the circle of her world, too, will grow. .- Service and pleasure constitute the aims of the Girl Reserves. Therefore, the organi- zation provides its members with many opportunities for both. Every member has an actual part in the activities of the club which are carried on by ,groups known as utrianglesf' for each girl is a member of one of these. Samuel Aronson Because it has been found that ignorance is the forerunner of racial prejudice and intolerance, the Jewish Youth League has sought to acquaint the high school student with the life and manners of the Jew. Since its origin in 1926, Roosevelt's 'J.Y.L. has successfully carried out its program of providing a medium through which the Jewish and non-Jewish youth of the school can meet and discuss their mutual problems. The group is affiliated with the Jewish Youth Alliance, a city-wide organization, and is also connected with the Chicago Board of Jewish Education. In addition to promoting a cultural program, the J.Y.L. has also carried out a social one. Feeling that the social life of the Jew is as expressive of his character as is his culture, the Jewish Youth League has done its utmost to provide opportunities for the expression of this phase of his personality. Under the guidance and sponsorship of Miss Elisabeth M. Its main function is to create, maintain, and extend, throughout the school and community, high standards of Christian character. The Roosevelt Hi-Y has, for the past three years, sent delegates to city, state, and national Older Boys' conferences. It has been a member of the Chicago Hi-Y Council for the same period, many of its delegates having been elected to office i-n that body. At present, the oflices of first vice-president of the State Conference and vice-president of the Hi-Y Council, are held by a member of the club. The club strives to promote its platform of the Four C's,': CLEAN SPEECH, CLEAN SPORTS, CLEAN SCHOLARSHIP, and CLEAN LIVING, in an attempt to help the members to become better citizens. To further the objective, the club sponsors many private social functions. Many educational and entertaining trips are taken each semester to acquaint the members with different occupations and modes of living. Moreover, the club seeks to support the school in its curricular and extra-curricular activities. In the three years that Mr. Donald I. Naden has been adviser of the Roosevelt Hi-Y Club, it has become one of the leading Hi-Y Clubs of the world. It owes its present status to the ability and understanding of its adviser. 60 Third Row-J. David, K. Putnik, V. Jamgochian, S. Joseph, I. Eincig. Second Rowgl.. Fischer, H. Korer, L. Barsella, M. Behind it was the impetus of previous achievements and a desire to keep the club up to the standards set by former members, The club has endeavored to foster friendliness and an exchange of ideas among the Spanish departments of the various North Section high schools. With representatives from Spanish clubs and classes of other schools as guests, the club served Spanish style refreshments, presented entertainment that was typical of the club, and gave a brief resume of its activities. At Roosevelt, the club has constantly tried to further general interest in the Spanish language and in Spain's history, music, geography, legend, and present-day life. It has encouraged further proficiency in Spanish by offering a group of students a cha-nce to converse in that language without being afraid of committing errors that would lower their grades. The club looks forward to next semester, hoping for greater success, increased membership, and growing recognition throughout the city as well as at Roosevelt. 62 Third Ro'wfI Stolar, L. Ehrlich, D. R aphael Ezgur The Boys' Council' took its place in school life under the name of the Dean's Council of Boys. Its purpose is to aid in supervisory, advisory, and recreational work with the boys of the school. This group, which meets in the Boys, Council oiiice, room 137, is composed of the most trustworthy and capable boys of the school, carefully selected from the 3B class. The members usually spend a period a day, Without credit, working on the task of at least one of the various committees. The Council first evolved the idea of scholarship awards, and for the purpose of recognizing scholastic achievement, organized and maintains the Honor Society. At present it is working toward the formation of a Roosevelt chapter of the National Honor Society, the plans for which are in the hands of a special committee which has the aid of a faculty committee as Well. In keeping with the idea of aiding boys to get the most pleasure and profit from their stay at Roosevelt, the Good Fellowship Committee carries on Freshman meetingsg this committee also holds many individual conferences with boys, especially with lower classmen. Other minor committees carry on the tasks of selecting members and pro- viding tours, the climax of which is the annual trip to the Indiana Dunes. The task of supervising the numerous Council activities lies in the hands of one of the most capable of the Roosevelt faculty, Jonathan A. Hacker, who provides the incentive and encour- agement necessary to the success of such a-n organization. 63 Third Row-M. Peterson, A. Hordesky, L. Hutz, -T. Andi-ezak, S. Lala, S. Remias, O. The purpose of this one-semester course is to provide a business laboratory in which the student may apply practically those principles which he has already learned in other commercial classes. In such a laboratory he also acquires further useful information which it is difhcult to gain while he is mastering the technique of shorthand and type- writing. A careful study is made, from the secretarial point of view, of representative lines of modern business. Each student selects the kind of work in which he is rnost interested --so that the class as a whole is working singly or in groups upon many different lines of work. A budget containing the technical terms and their definitions, also pertinent and signihcant facts about each business with sample letters that have actually been used by representative Hrms, is prepared by each student. As soon as one budget is finished, it is marked and filed away and another one started. When a student finishes the course, he has a practical, usable knowledge of fifteen or twenty kinds of modern business. ' Many students from this class are assigned to administrative assistants and to sponsors of activities as private secretaries where they give real and vital service to the school. 64 .L Third.Raw-M. The Main Cfhce Secretaries All students who Work as secretaries anywhere in the school outside of 209 are included in the group called main oflice secretaries. This group is usually made up of honor roll students who give their services unselfishly to the school. ln exchange they get' valuable experience and training in varied phases of ofhce work on Which, after leaving school, they are often able to capitalize. In the main oilice they serve as infor- mation clerks, giving courteous attention to parents and visitors. They prepare the daily absence bulletin, distribute the mail, answer telephones, Hle, hand out supplies to the teachers, and help the clerks in many ways. The International Drawing Exchange draws its secretaries from this group. They Write letters to all parts of the World. Harriet Swedek and Lucille Watson from the Secretarial Training class have taken the responsibility for this important work this semester. At times they have had so much work that they have needed the services of the entire class in cutting stencils a-nd duplicating work to be mailed to many places. Many of these students assist the registrar in the enrollment of transfers from other city schools and from the outside. They write all letters asking for outside credits- and Hle these credits as they are received. They also record all speed tests and units of Work for the classes in typewriting, so that each member of these classes is able to note his daily progress from the bulletin board. Each of the Administrative Assistants has several secretaries from this group who do correspondence work and 'perform many and varied oflice tasks. The services of secretaries are recognized by the school by the granting of one-quarter of a major credit, also by recommendations for honors, and for positions obtained after leaving school. 65 Fourth Rott'-A, Leilmovitz, R. The Weekly is the organ by means of which the four thousand or more students of Roosevelt High School keep in touch with the many events which occur daily in and about the school. A worthwhile paper for a worthwhile school, is the slogan of the Roosevelt Weekly, and it has done its best to live up to it. That its efforts have not been in vain, is evi- denced by those certificates showing the international honor ratings it has received from Quill and Scroll. The members of the staff are chosen from the journalism classes by Miss Tinker, journalism instructor and staff sponsor, who, for fourteen semesters, has given the students studying and working with her the basic essentials of newspaper work. The result has been a paper worthy of the school it represents. 66 Fourth Ron'---I, Brown. R. Flaliarty. R. Zelm. B. Cllez, G. Levy, D. Baker. G. Colletti, R. Suertli. Third Ron'---A. Bywell, E.
