And as we keep our vigils each alone, The first faint flush of light at last We seeg And though We know immutable is Fate, With feeble hands we plan our Destiny. And some are cursed with pagan lust for gold, And some with lust for mortal victory- Morasses these, that trap the wayward soil And drag it down through Time's forgotten And some there are that seek a death in life And bury faith and hope in single graveg And others build cathedrals of the mind- Their quiet strength the pillars of the nave. And yet the paths that Time prepares for each Lead oft afar from the expected way- And we who scan with anxious eyes the dawn, SCR. G 1 , 'ff wvammmm, - 27 4A Class History No one of the class of February, 1936, can forget that cold, snowy day in the winter of 1932, when a crowd of anxious youngsters gathered before the huge red brick build- ing which bore the name Theodore Roosevelt Senior High School. That name was read, reread, and stamped on every brain by the time the bell rang for the beginning 'of their first day at high school. Some who were thrilled by the glamour of starting on a new venture seemed to give confidence to those other meek, bewildered newcomers whose very knees trembled as they ascended the wide steps. That was only the beginning! Life for a Freshie, with the perpetual taunt of Hey, Freshief' the everlasting burden of the stuffed briefcase, the never-failing trouble with the lock, and the con- stant fear of the extra period, was slow torture. The events of that first year are hazy in the minds of most, except for that one brilliant memory, Emerald Isle, their first operetta. Oh Freshman days, when X was a student's curse and a foreign language was a Herculean task! ' Then came a change! With the passing of a day, a Freshman became a Sophomore. The school began to look brighter, and che old brief case was discarded-for a new one. It was then that the Soph discovered many strange faces around him. A new group of students had trans- ferred from the junior high school to join him in his second year. There followed a grand renewal of old friendships and the formation of new ones. As the year progressed, the Soph,' discovered that the X of the past year had been of little consequence com- pared with the horrors that geometry presented. It was anything but plain geometry to him. However, that was all forgotten when the Soph', discovered that the school had football and basketball teams. A feeling of patriotism surged through him, he bought and nobly memorized the school song, and, defying all laws, timidly whistled it in the halls. Yes, a Soph was a big shot in comparison with a Freshie. Thus passed another year. There were many changes when sophomores became juniors. Every chest swelled at least two inches at this realization. At last a junior could go to the fourth instead of the ninth period assembly. Finally he received a program shorter than through the twelfth period. It was during this year that the new arrangement of lunch and division periods was made. The juniors were as baffled as the Freshies at first, but they gave themselves the credit of being able to hide their bewilderment. After many debates as to its advantages and disadvantages, everyone grew accustomed to the change and found it pleasing. Being termed upperclassmen encouraged many to enter the extra-curricular activities. Accordingly, every student found that his school spirit soared, his importance grew, and he eagerly looked forward to the time when he would become a Senior. At last his ambition was realized. Senior!! The word was magic, it promised so much, and when each one finally assumed the worthy title, the school became a kingdom and each senior, a king. Organ- izing a class and selecting class officers was a turning point which made everyone real- ize his growing importance. It didn't take long for the desired 4A semester to arrive. Then he was the Top, and with that came the realization that there were but eighteen weeks to rule the school. Each one worked hard to show his authority. But there was a final climax! It was graduation with its tears and smiles, with its memories and plans-graduation, after which every student left the school a man or a woman. The same group who four years before had begun their high school days were leaving to enter a greater school-the school of life. MARY JEAN Rows RUBY ROBERTS 1331 I 1 Class Prophecy Newsboys shouting, brakes of slim-nosed automobiles screeching, crowds milling in canyons of towering skyscrapers-such is downtown Chicago in the year 195 5 ! Thirty stories above the jammed streets sits the editor-in-chief of the leading metro- politan tabloid, The Daily Weekly, practically smothered in newspapers. The tele- phone rings and Robert Schwarz emerges from under the paper mountain, takes down a message, and again begins shuffling through the pages of the latest edition. I Thick, black type carries the news that Herman B. Weissman, leader of a revolu- tionist movement against the present woman's regime, has finally been captured by General Warren'ScheFfner. A quick glance through the story tells that Helen Wolf, newly-inaugurated President of the United States, together with Alice Briskin, Secretary of War, and Eleanor Olson, Attorney General, expressed their approval of this action. Mozart Ratner, prominent criminal lawyer, issued a statement that Weissman's defense will be founded on the theory that, according to the great historian of the age, Lester Kahn, the fathers of the Constitution would turn over in their present habitat Qeither up or downj if they knew Helen Wolf was President. Grace Kuby, widow of former President K-, today retaliated with a nationwide broadcast on Why a Woman Regime? Another page and more familiar names! Under the heading of Knows All, con- ducted by Ray Urbanz, the editor finds this choice bit of news-Joe Tauber, president of the Hole-proof Shoe Company, the man who finally convinced the Ethiopians that bare feet were unnecessary to comfort, and Alex Lechert, popular Ambassador-at-Large, were seen at the Anti-Sleep Night Club with two glamorous chorus girls. In the same column is the announcement that Mr. Stork left an octet at the home of Reva and Chester Cohen. Mr. Cohen is recuperating in the expectant father's ward of Gertrude Seelig's famed hospital. The editor reads the next item with interest, for even editors remember the thrill oi a irst visit to the circus. Billed as the leading attraction are the world-famous Siamese triplets, Blanche and Sylvia Rudy. The third one? That's the attraction, he's invisible! Other features are Alex Palukaytis, the sob-defying clown of Better Bunk Circus, and Marvin Rubin, tallest man in the show. Five cents extra, if you wish to see his stilts. O-n the same page, he gazes with awe at a hair-raising advertisement posed by Beatrice Fox before and after using We Grow It hair tonic. Hurriedly he takes note, for he remembers that one of his friends OJ has been telling him, Your hair looks like heaven, there's no parting there. Not far down the column, Roland Young, the matinee heart stealer, confesses to his public that he keeps his eyelashes sweeping and curling by using Isadore Pitesky's fthe mad inventor'sj latest aid to beauty, a perfected eye-lash curler. In the radio section, Bob notices with surprise that Sheldon Weiss was awarded a tin medal for his unusual animal imitations on a local amateur hour. The sponsor especially commented on Sheldon's splendid imitation of the voiceless giraffe. Another main event over Station BLAH is the weekly drama Television Love written by Joseph Stein and co-starring Frances Kaplan and Florence Friedland. Other features are a review of Martha Nitschke's book How to Remember in Twelve Easy Lessons and a piano recital by the reknowned pianist, Shirlee Shapiro. On the financial page, the Blank Soap Box Company prophesies the beginning of a great era in the history of soap box orators. Since Norman Katz, the Voice of the People, and Bob Calahan have been using soa-p boxes in Bughouse Square, business has picked up. The David Proven Throat Lozenge Company also expects an increase in profits as a contract for their product has just been signed by Doris Engelhardt, who has begun a nationwide drive against chemistry. QEditor's note-can't blame her.j The latest bulletin from Mayor Gervin's office states that he will continue his drive against immoral plays. He has already ordered the close of Rudolf Zoellner's melodrama, 1341 Cigar Highway. The mayor was highly indignant over the play, especially the part enacted by the villain, Mr. Zoellner. Next comes the sports section and with it the news that Patricia Olsen was elected head of the women's athletic committee for Olympics. She will be assisted by Mary Jean Rowe and Mabel Libert. Joe Isen was unanimously elected chairman of the men's committee with Jack Overgard, George Green, Harold Balikov, and Jerome Berenz- weig as his aids. A Bob folded the paper with an air of satisfaction, and then pushed a button for his sec- retary, Julia Huyvaert. After reprimanding her for spending ofhce hours knitting, he asked to have a conference with his staff. Soon they responded, one by one. First came Eddie Eck, cartoonist, then Bertha Gleicher, fashion editor, next Cecile Siglin, conductor of Advice to the Lovelorn, and last of all Wilbur Pollak, head of the photography staff. They gathered around their chief, who tipping back his chair, said, In tomorrow's edition- IRMA ZIEGER ANNABE1. GERWITZ MARSHALL ADER 111- Class Legacy WVhat at first appeared to be a speck upon the horizon now looms before us as a sig- nificent reality, the Port of Graduation. After four years of sailing on the good ship Roosevelt, through Weather sometimes stormy, sometimes calm, we, the class of February, 1936, have at last arrived at our destination. Before disembarking, we want to present something to those of you whose journey on the good ship is not yet over. To Mr. Gaffney, we leave the best high school in the city, Roosevelt. To Mr. Clarke, the task of teaching the 4A's which is their right foot. To the Advisers, seven hxmmers with which to knock sense into' the heads of their charges. To Mr. Schulz, the vain hope of some day having Miss Waters agree with him. To Miss Waters, a pet shop where she may keep her honored hounds. To Mr. Bergstrasser, an endless collection of pink ties, black shirts, and orchid hand- kerchiefs with which to amaze the students. To the 4A Division Teachers, the sadness f?j which should follow our departure. To the Faculty, bottles of blue ink. To the Weekly, a vacuum cleaner to pick up the dirt on the campus. To the Football Team, their most loyal rooters, Captain Seabury and his band. To 209, a box of insect chaser to rid it of all the pests. To the Lunchroom, an automatic bouncer which will test quarters and half dollars. To the Dark Room, some window shades so that the sun will not be so blinding. To the Seniors, the idea of graduation, even if it doesn't materialize. To the Juniors, all the upper air in and about Roosevelt in which their noses may soar to new heights. To the Sophomores, a bottle of glue which we sincerely hope will enable them to stick to their books. To the Freshmen, heavier books with which to stuff their bulging brief cases. We also leave to them the elevators which were presented to us four years ago and which are almost as good as new. To Roosevelt High School, we leave our undying loyalty. We, the class of February, 1936, hope that you will accept these gifts in the spirit in which they are given. We hope also that you will treasure them as we have those of former classes, and pass the most valuable on to your successors. Marching along through the year 1933, were the golf and swimming terms. What teams! What players! Were they good? They certainly were-nobody could say nay with the golf team pulling out of a hole in one with the city championship, and the junior and senior swimmers also gaining firsts. The basketball team helped to decorate the school with a shield by taking the city championship. The baseball and track teams also made outstanding records. If 1933 could only have lasted forever! But Father Time was hard on our heels-and soon came 1934. Those teams were not so bad either, were they? What was the matter with the swim- ming team? Nothing, say we. They made the best record a Roosevelt swimming team ever made. How did you like the basketball team? It took the city title for the second consecutive year! Remember? Pretty good, eh? The little tennis boys grew up, too- they left the cozy fireside and went into the cold, cold world and just about burned up that state competition. Baseball and track put several good men before the public eye. What happened? It was 1935. The pony basketball team started the season of 1935-36 for Roosevelt with a rever- berating bang by winning the city championship for the third consecutive year! They certainly deserved to pat themselves on the back. QBelieve it or not, they didn't break their arms doing it.j They were led by Captain Young fToots to his friendsj, who is graduating with the present class. The Heavies did their part too-lumbering along undefeated through the North Sec- tion until the finals when they were brought down fighting by Senn. Next year's team will miss Joe Bacsa, the fighting center of the 1935 Heavies. Coach Marx's junior mermen captured second place in the city, while the seniors had to be content with third place. They were ably led by such men as Tarzan Kiefer, who brought honor to Roosevelt many times by his world record-breaking performances, Overgard, and the color harmony boys, Gray and Green. The team next year will be without the services of Overgard, Biusk, Green, and Kaitis, all of whom are being graduated. The football team started out like a house af1re with Coach Alton's brawnies tying Schurz, the strongest team in the North Section. It certainly looked as if they were going places. But the ardor of the fans cooled, and this, together with the many injur- ies sustained by the regulars, caused the team to go into a bad slump. However, they still managed to give Lane a stiff! battle Cas usualj. Berenzweig, Katz, and Neuhaus will be missed when they are graduated this semester. Last year the cross-country team surprised everyone by making the best record yet attained by any Roosevelt harriers, bringing home the bacon to the tune of 12 won and 1 lost. This year under the guidance of Mr. Hendershot, the new coach, we hope they can repeat the performance. This is the last season for co-captain Alex Palukaytis Qjust call me Pal j , who has done much to build up the team. H The track team did nothing exceptional this year, placing only one man in the city finals. Rah! Rah! Rah! The girls are here QI hope they stayj. Times have changed since mother was a girl. Imagine skirts running around on baseball, track, or basketball teams, or those old fashioned bathing suits on a modern swimming team or life-saving squad! The outstanding athletic gals who are graduating include Muriel Berndt, Mabel Libert, Patricia Olsen, and Cecile Siglin. They have R's -and everybody cer- tainly knows about it. O.K., kids,,' get going, and see if you can put the boys in a back row. The championships won by teams and the ability displayed by individual players have helped to make our four years at Roosevelt very interesting. Time marches on! May the teams, the individual players, and the rooters of the class of 1935 continue through life the good record begun at Roosevelt. JOE ISBN CECILE SIGLIN 1 38 1 R Club Faurilz Ron-IB. Zimrncrlnan. As a result it placed in the city championship cross-country meet held at Washington Park, November 9, 1935. More- over, the Blue and Gold harriers were able to defeat such rivals as Lake View, Senn, Aus- tin, and Wendell Philips. They lost by a small margin to Laine and Schurz. The co-captains of the 1935 squad were Lawrence Plough and Alex Palukaytis, who invariably placed first and second for Roosevelt in all of the meets. Plough and Palu- kaytis, who placed tenth and nineteenth respectively in the city meet, are the ninth and tenth in the history of Roosevelt to garner major letters. Others who gained the honor of winning minor letters are Hugo Resocke, Irving Stotler, Paul Paradise, and Susman. Those members of the team who did not gain letters but whose services were invaluable throughout the season are Sheldon Weiss, Edward Eck, and Chris Schmidt. In our Hrst year we took the opportunity to join the Civics Club, the G. A. A., the R. O. T. C., the J. Y. L., and the various other organizations open to incoming students. How proud we felt to say that we were members of these, and that we were actually participating in the activities of the school! And to complete a perfect first year of high school, many of us received honor pins admitting us into the Honor Society, which is open only to students having a high scholastic standing. In January, 1933, as sophomores, several of us became oustanding in the activities of the R. O. T. C., band, orchestra, and the athletic teams. Some of us were members of the lightweight basketball team that won a city championship, and others helped the orchestra to win second place in the city-wide finals that year. A growing interest was displayed by many of our class in the musical productions and the student publications of the school. In the winter of 1934, as juniors, we developed an interest in student activities in a larger field. We entered city, state, and national contests, and honors were brought to Roosevelt and to our class by Mozart Ratner, who won the all city J. Y. L. debate cham- pionship, and Boyce Smith, Who became national drum champion. We gave our sup- port to the musical productions which starred Alex Lechert and Sheldon Weiss, two of our popular entertainers. The Symphonic Choir, composed of many members of our class, won first place in city-wide competition, the R. O. T. C. turned out a cham- pionship squad which received an honor rating in the Sixth Corps Area. In the fall of 1935, as pompous and significant seniors, we elected Alex Lechert, Sheldon Weiss, Alice Briskin, and Eleanor Olson as our 4A Class ofiicers. Individual members of our class were chosen as ofiicials in student activities. Joe Tauber was elected president of the Supreme Student Council, Bob Calahan was elected president of the Civics Club, Rudolf Zoellner gained the position of Junior Fire Marshall, and Roland Young was elected captain of the lightweight basketball team which won the city championship. - For ma-ny of us school is coming to an end, and for all of us a new phase of life is approaching. But the knowledge, benefits, and happiness we have derived from the activ- ities of our high school days will stay with us forever. GRACE KUBY SHIRLEE SHAPIRO 1441 Fuifrflz Raft' -M, Berman, VV. The I council meets in five sections, four of which represent the Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior divisions. The fifth, the General Student Council, is representatives from each of the four sectional councils, i-n addition composed of two to two representa- tives from the Mayfair Branch, and one from each club in the school Matters concerning the individual groups are brought up in their respective councils, and those of a purely sectional nature are settled by the councils concerned. Those requiring the attention of the school as a whole are submitted to the General Student Council. Problems of interest to the entire group which develop in the General Council are, in turn, referred to the smaller groups for their consideration. The result of this system has been to provide every year in the school with the opportunity to handle its own affairs. A certain degree of efficiency in self government has been developed in the past semester, and it is the hope of the present organization that the incoming Student Council will work to secure that student and faculty co-operation which is essential to continued progress in the future. Bobbie Deutsch, Ferrel Phelps, Virginia Norman Outstanding in the promotion of citizenship and school service is the Civics Club, che oldest and largest club at Roosevelt. For the purpose of developing good citizenship, this organization arranges and conducts patriotic assemblies to commemorate the national holidays. It also assumes responsibility for other assemblies of a civic nature. With the intention of serving the school, it is always ready to assist any organization having the interests of the school at heart. In view of its service program, it is not surprising that every semester the club achieves a membership of between two and three thousand. In addition to enabling the members to serve their school, the Civics Club offers the opportunity to enjoy certain recreational advantages. Each semester the club provides an entertainment of local or professional talent for its members. In addition it gives two socials each semester, one for the freshman-sophomore and the other for the junior- senior members. This semcster's outstanding achievement was the purchase of a much needed public address system for the auditorium. The club hopes to improve and perfect this system until it is usable for all assembly purposes. The elected officers and the committees appointed by the president direct the policies of this club which may truthfully be called Roosevelt's booster organization. 1461 Tlzirrl' Rott'-S. Shapiro, J. Marie Reiter The hall guard system is one of the oldest and most important organizations at Roosevelt, It has kept order in the corridors of both Roosevelt and Hibbard, where it was put into operation nearly fourteen years ago. Mr. E. H. Schulz, the organizer of the system, has been its sponsor throughout its entire existence. The most important functions of the system are: 1. To keep order in the corridors duri-ng school hours 2. To direct traffic during lunch periods 3. To maintain order and cleanliness in the lunch room 4. To take charge of fire drills 5. To supervise the seating and order at assemblies These duties are handled by the three sections of the organization, namely, the staff, the corridor guards, and the lunch line-up guards. The staff, consisting of the chief, his assistants, and the secretaries, are in complete charge of the system. The chief, who is also the Junior Fire Marshall, is responsible for details of the fire drills. The staff also arranges the seating and keeps order at assemblies. The corridor guards see that quiet is maintained in the halls throughout the day. The lunch guards are in charge of the lunchroom and see that it is orderly and clean in appearance. The line-up guards direct traffic during the lunch periods so as to avoid congestion of certain stairways. ' Because of its ma-nifold purposes, the hall guard system is important in the make-up of our school. Its success, however, is dependent upon the student body whose coopera- tion it solicits. 1511 Boys' Council 'Illini Run' S. Kogan. S. Chuplik. R. Su4m:m. L. Cmuly. l. Siegel. l. Kussy. T, Stolznr. It possesses an honor rating for perfection in drill and appearance, a crack squad, which has gained trophies several times i-n city meets, and a rifle team which other schools have found hard to beat. On joining the unit, the cadet is first taught the fundamentals of drill, neatness, discipline, courtesy, and handling a rifle. And like every city, it must have its newspaper to record local occurrences, The Weekly is the organ by means of which the four thousand or more students of Roosevelt High School keep in touch with the many events which occur daily in and about the schoola. From the outset of its organization in 1927, Roosevelt's initial year as a high school, the Weekly has maintained a standard worthy of its motto, A Worthwhile Newspaper for a Worthwhile School . Attesti-ng to its standing as one of the line high school news- papers in the country, are the honor memberships which the Weekly possesses, namely -the Illinois State High School Press Association, and the National Scholastic Press Association. ' A special tribute was accorded the Weekly this semester when Quill and Scroll, official organ for international high school journalism, at Northwestern University, awarded it membership in the international honor society of high school newspapers. This semester Robert Schwarz, editor-in-chief, has endeavored to present a paper equally interesting to all groups in the school. Freshmen and sophomore news and features particularly have been augmented. Under the able guidance of Miss Lavinia M. Ti-nker, editorial adviser, the staff mem- bers have worked to produce and publish a paper worthy of the great school of which it is a part. The faculty business advisers are Ewald H. The program is divided into three parts: intellectual, spiritual, and social, respectively. Meetings, therefore, are classified under the headings of lectures and speeches, cere- monies, parties, a-nd social get-together meetings, all of which are conducted by five committees, which include every member. The aim of the Girl Reserves is to inspire the members to reach toward the best, to be clean in mind and body, to seek eagerly to better themselves, and to serve where they are needed. Loyalty, dependability, and sincerity, are pledged by the faithful members. As a part of its service work, the organization fulfills a 'pledge for money to the Y. W. C. The Girl Reserve emblem is a blue and silver triangle, the three points denoting body, mind, and spirit, in which is inserted the initials, G. R. The Library Club One of the newer organizations at Roosevelt is the Library Club which, after an absence of several years from the list of extra-curricular activities, has again taken its place among them. To promote a close relationship among that group of students who, in serving as assistants in the library, perform a most necessary service for the student body, is the primary aim of the organization. The means selected as best suited to this purpose is the production of one-act plays and playlets to be completely in the hands of the members. The variety of programs proposed has caused the club to be divided into two groups meeting every other Friday, one the second period and one the eleventh. Presiding over the entire organization is a president, while each of the groups has a chairman at its head with a secretary and treasurer under him. Membership in the club is limited to student library assistants serving during the current semester. The club now numbers fifty, a total which will probably remain constant. THE STUDENT las he faintsj: Shades of my English teachers! WALTER PORGES Aftermath of Valentine,s Day I did not sleep so well last night! 'Twas not because the stars were bright, 'Twas not the pale moon's baneful light That kept me wide awake in bed While others to the world were dead. I did not sleep so well last night! In confidence I now recite The reason for my hapless plight:- It was because that girl of mine Did not send me a Valentine. I have no praise for Valentine, He is no patron saint of mine, I-Ie's just a Scotchman, I opine. A happier saint will bless my way,- My girl will write St. Patrick's Day! BOYCE V. SMITH. OUCH! I clipped the picture out with care And placed it where it looked quite fair. I looked, I sought: I sought in vain: Then turned around and looked again. The walls smiled down upon my folly. And then I sat on that tack, by golly. NATHAN LEVINE. 17QY Reflections in- a Snowfall The world was very wear-y, The sky did ever weep, The trees in naked awkwardness Were kept from winter sleep- Unrest, disquietude prevailed And discontent the world all hailed. Then, looking down, God saw below This dark earth full of grief and woe Sent as a gift from Him to man The fragile virgin snow. And when at length the sleepy World Has drawn that shade of eve'n And doffed her daytime splendor, Her sparkling jewels to leave in Darkness, save for the morn The lamp of night now glowing, Catches patches of glowing jewels That day forgot in going. One by one the stars appear- The candles of the sky- Serenely shining down the While Where crusted snowdrifts lie. How still the peaceful Winter night, How white and cold the snow! Yet warmth and cheerfulness have lic Upon God's earth below. Home I'm not a craven, I never turn From duties that I must discern, But in the spacious firmament On earth, what being is content To meet his Host in lights of fame. I'll take my blows at home, I claim- At Home. For let me work with spirit strong, And face my duties in days long, And let my work as He has planned And bless my priest and group my band, So in the Strain of'Life I'll rear My woes in life, but let me steer My grind at Home. With laurels to my home I'd go, But for them I'll not hew my foe, For every phase of life can't take courage home, but just can make 'starry inspiration dim, My My For all my love lies there with Him, At Home. 1711 4 RUBY Romanrs ELLIOTT HAGLE .. v,, ' 4' J 1. x K 0 1' In x A M in n rx -. 4 M,-qi 1 72 1 1-Q.AnmrAml!l1am -xii 3?
