On his journey he will find No opportunity To rise to some high level. There stands a man Lost in the wonder of his dreaming, Forgetting to walk the trodden road, Caught by a vibrant dream, Risen from the common dust. Here trips one, A foolish smile on her lips. She sees nothing in the path Excepting that which pleases her, And this the dust soon hides. There is one who walks with head held high And eyes clear-seeing . . . He has caught the glory waiting at the end Of the trodden path. From my threshold I see a passing face like mine, Looking for the answer to a question. Some great impelling force Urges me to tread that unknown road And seek the answer to that question . . . So I, with humble feet And heart rushing into life, Seek out my way. They agreed most heartily with one of their number who, overwhelmed by the length of building that seemed to stretch into infinity, naively declared, I'm kinda scared. Resolutely, though, they entered upon their high school careers. The going was not easy at first, for life was just one dizzy round of work, either wrestling with irregular Latin verbs, solving for X, or trying to live down the cruel fate of being the school's goat, Some of them fell by the wayside, but those who remained to become sophomores were amply rewarded for their fortitude, for, as the months passed, they began to find more and more pleasure in their new life. Almost imperceptibly high school became a glorious adventure, an adventure that was en- hanced by that unexpectedness which included wading knee-deep in geometry, Ancient History, and fighting with Caesar in Gaul. Having conquered Caesar, as well as other worthy sophomore opponents, French, Spanish, and German in origin, those once awed freshmen became juniors. Now the clubs, teams, and the Weekly staff were open to them. In writing, in music, in all the arts, they added to Roosevelt's traditions and prestige. In the field of athletics they brought to Roosevelt clean victories and brave losses. Worldly creatures though they had become, will they ever forget the thrill of that first junior-senior social of the Civics Club? How important and how sophisticated they felt when as 4B's they organized the class, electing Jack Quinn, Roy Lohmiller, Rosalie Gemeinhardt, and Lionel Hirsch as their leaders. Despite that aloof indifference to the ordinary routine of school life which is the hall-mark of the senior, they continued to gain Honor for Roosevelt. John Kouba and Irvin Kahan both won places in competitive oratorical contests. Paula Dwyer, Leon Resnikoff, and Marion Erdman received medals in essay contests, and the lightweight basketball team, made up almost entirely of 4A's, won the City cham- pionship. Then came the climax of it all-graduation, with the thousand and one events con- nected with it. With four years of work, play, and real happiness behind them, they looked back and smiled at those bewildered freshmen of 1931. And that same one who then expressed his doubts so fearfully, said with a catch in his voice, It's been such 3 swell school! PAULA DWYER HELEN LOWENSON 39 CLASS PROPHECY Banners and flags of red, blue, green and yellow, every color imaginable, representing every nation of the world, fly in the cool, joyous breezes. The greatest spectacle in years, the Olympiad, being held in Chicago, is about to begin. A great crowd jams the huge, colorful stadium, designed by Roy Lohmiller, to see champions of the sports world from every country on earth engage in contest. Trumpets blare and the vast throng rises to its feet cheering and applauding wildly as John Kouba, President of the United States, enters, followed closely by his Secretary of State, Leon Resnikoff, Secretary of the Treasury, Richard Kent, Attorney-General, Wil- liam Stangor, and Secretary of War, Robert Netwig. Completing the Presidential party are the Brain Trust, Professors Edward Segel, Marshall Melin, and Martin Wasser- man. Professor Segel has the distinction of being the only person in the world who can understand his theory of Revolution. The President and his party take their placefin the celebrities' box in which are already seated many of the country's luminaries. Beau- tiful, richly attired Dorothy Skager, famous as Miss America, is seated beside Roland Muller, handsome movie star, who makes the feminine sex sigh in ecstasy as they watch him on the screen. Close by is Gertrude Karel, renowned prima donna. Gerty also sings the praises of Bergbaum's Bermuda onions over the radio and is billed as the voice with a tear. With her are Erwin Salk, director of the Metropolitan Operia Com- pany, and Harry Siebold, warden of Sing Sing. Warden Siebold had inhabited that penal institution so long that the government in order to economize appointed him to the position of warden. To their left is Theodore Cohen, world's greatest pianist with his pretty wife, Mrs. Cohen. Also in the celebrities' box are Falls Hershey, candy mil- lionaire, famous for his Hershey Bar, Harvey Patt, who gets his daily exercise by pat- ting the little Pattsg Harvey Tamon, rat trap magnate, who got his start catching mice in the Roosevelt lockers, and Major General Sol Somach, who is leaving presently for Hollywood to be technical adviser for Director Norman Aronson's new militirade, Hot Dogs of the Kitchen Police. Occupying the remaining seats are Jack Vihon, titian-haired president of the Associated Press-Your-Pants Service, Pearl Joseph, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for her novel novel, Most Things Never Count, Madame Reva, formerly Reva Katz, more famous for her contributions to beauty culture than Edna Wallace Hopper, and Bernice Stone, modern commercial artist, whose cellophane stage settings have attracted considerable attention. A hush falls over the crowd as jack Quinn, Mayor of Chicago, steps to the micro- phone to welcome the contesting teams of the various nations. His Honor the Mayor, himself an ex-Olympic track champ, is still doing track work on the side, keeping track of his Quinn-tuplets, and running down the railroad track each morning after the 8:010 Qhe still finishes second to the trainj. After the welcoming address is con- cluded, at a signal by the mayor, the parade of champions files past the judges' stand. The stand contains many of the world's greatest sport authorities, among whom are Lynn Wimmer, president of the Chicago Athletic Commission, Irvin Kahan, handsome sports editor-in-chief of the Police Gazette, and Tillie Strusiner and Dolly Eisen- stein, known as the Floradora Boys. Amid the wild roarings of the crowd the band strikes up the Star Spangled Banner, and the American Olympic teams, of which each and every member is a champion in his field, file past the judges' stand in grand manner. There is Chester Zelenka, swift, high hurdlerg Milton La Zares, Paul Walsh, and Lionel Hirsh, milers of excellence, the women's relay team, consisting of Mary Stack, Helen Lowenson, Lorraine Baldry, and Helen Russell, Johnnie Wolf and Verne Showalter, star discus throwersg Ole Olson, heavyweight lifter, Irving Greenberg, just an all-around starg and Bernie Haber and Ira Hirshman, the All-American Managers. The parade is finished and the contesting teams prepare for the first eve-nt. Once more a hush falls over the crowd as Frank Walker, field announcer, steps up to the microphone. Ladies and gentlemen! The first event of the day is .... PERETZ KATZ MARSHALL MELIN 40 CLASS WILL With two sharp taps of the gavel, Jack Quinn, president of the 4A class, called the eighth period assembly to order. You are gathered here today, he announced, for the purpose of listening to the reading of the Last Will and Testament of the Class of June, 1935. The secretary of the class, Rosalie Gemeinhardt, will read that important document. Impressed by the solemnity of his tone even the most wiggley freshmen became wigg1eless, and in the ensuing silence the secretary stepped forward and began to read. We, the Class of June, 1935, realizing the uncertainty of four years at Roosevelt fthe teachers can't flunk us foreverj, and being of sound mind, memory, and under- standing, do make, publish, and declare the following as and for our Last Will and Testament. To Mr. Gaffney, we leave the Herculean task of making Rooseveltians perfect. To the Advisers, the hopeless job of convincing students that it isn't wise to Wait until the last two weeks of a quarter to start to work. To Miss Waters, the Princes of Chicago and the Dukes of Roosevelt. To Jack Quinn, his basketball career and Division 8010. To the Seniors, the privilege of stepping into our old shoes. To the Juniors, the heavenly feeling of being little big-shots. To the Sophomores, who won our displeasure by usurping our privilege of ragging the freshmen, we leave the ice water in the fountain outside the office. To the Freshmen, with generosity inspired by their freshness, we leave bigger and stronger brief cases, more and larger lunchroom trays, and less and better advice. To the Epicureans, we leave the cafeteria with the hope that the length of spaghetti will be limited to five feet, that prices will be raised, and that portions will be reduced. To the Book Lovers, we leave the library, which is now on the A. T. A. code QAII Talking Allowedj. To the Natatorium, we leave the ring around the pool. Therefore, in witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hand and seal at our residence in the Roosevelt High School in the year nineteen hundred and thirty-five. FLGUSHHAN. RA-L 42 AGEGIIFMVHFQIIFMEIEBQW ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES Hats off! The Blue-Gold parade is passing in review! Preceded by the band, the outstanding athletic personalities of '32, '33, '34, and '35 march before the June class of '35, true Rough Rider rooters. Go, Roosevelt, go. Wave, wave your banners high, for victory's our aim. As the stirring strains of the Roosevelt Victory March echo in the distance, the stellar sports attractions of the past four years proudly present themselves for another round of applause. Included in the corps of '32 we discover Sol Sackheim's golfers, who captured the North Section crown, while closely following, we find Coach Delaporte's raqueteers, proudly displaying their tie for first place in section competition. The lightweight cagers, under Coach Chappel's direction, romped over all division opponents to secure the North Section title. Finally, as the last ma-n of '32 passes from view, we are re- minded of the splendid achievements of the Marxmen, the Altonites, and the reliable thin-clads, each of whom attained an honor position in inter-school events, thus adding materially to the luster of Roosevelt's athletic star. After a brief intermission, the athletes of '33 file by, prominently exhibiting five shields and a trophy awarded for superiority in the several sports. What a record-the sand-trap evaders garnered the city championship, the junior mermen copped first place in the annual Lake Shore Relays, while the seniors took second, the elder Marxmen also came up with a championship in the city meet 25-yard pool swim. Roosevelt's cage aggregations not only acquired another shield for the first floor cor- ridor, but also merited a trophy. A combined light and heavy-weight quintet took second place in the Stagg Tourney, while the lights were acclaimed city champs. In addition, the baseball team reached the semi-finals ffirst time in Roosevelt sporting historyj, and the track squad boasted several record breakers. With this enviable score the 1933 athletic season passes, inscribing another thrilling episode in the Roosevelt book of honors. But, here comes the 1934 representation-these faces are familiar! Of course you remember Adolph Kiefer, national backstroke record holder, who aided materially in enabling the swimming team to enjoy its best season. Roland Young and Ruben Kat- zen can be seen among the other pony basketeers Waving the pennant upon which is written M1934 City Champs. Supplementing the accomplishments of these groups, the tennis team competed for the first time in the state meet held at the University of Illinois, the diamondeers were victorious in five sectional contests, and the tracksters produced several prominent members. For the first time in many seasons both cage teams, lights and heavies, placed first in the North Section. Although the latter was defeated in the semi-finals, the ponies re- taliated by retaining the city crown against Farragut. This year the lights were ably supported by Captain Young and Muller, Katzen, and Wolf. One of the best heavy- weight teams ever representing Roosevelt finished its section tournament without a single loss. The basketeers who were responsible for the good fortune of the team include Captain Wimmer and Strusiner, Knab, Eisenstein, and Dyslin. Splash! The junior mermen took the city league title for the third successive time, featuring the performances of Kiefer, Neproszatis, and Gray. Although the tracksters didn't fare so well this season, the team will undoubtedly feel the loss of the June graduates, Quinn, Walsh, and Zelenka. Captain Siebold and Benziger of the gridders merited a position on the All-Section Football Team, and the other squads, including tennis, fencing, and baseball valiantly fought through their schedules with the never-say-die spirit. '32, '33, '34, '35 are now past history-but the thrills of athletic competition offered by our stalwart Roosevelt sportsmen will live on in our memories forever! I September of 1931, saw us enter Roosevelt with some confidence and more appre- hension, but, above all, with a desire to accomplish what freshmen had not accomplished before. The Civics Club, the G.A.A., the intra-mural baseball, basketball, and swim- ming, the P.-T.A., and the Honor Society all received our enthusiastic support. And so came the completion of our first year in high school. After a summer of contemplating the joy of becoming sophomores, we entered school in the fall semester of 1932, prepared to participate in school events. Many of us became prominent in the activities of the R.O.T.C., Symphonic Choir, Band, and Orchestra. Membership in the Jewish Youth League, the Hi-Y, Slide Rule Club, Ger- man Club, and other organizations was sought by other sophomores. Last, but not least, support of athletic teams, musical productions, publications and the like was provided by a majority of our class. From the fall of 1933, to the summer of 1934, we were up-and-coming juniors. We had developed a taste for student activities, and even though many of our classmates had to leave for neighboring schools, those of us who were left entered whole-heartedly into the politics of the Student Council and the Civics Club. Literary honors were brought to Roosevelt and to our class by Pearl Joseph, who won first prize in a state poetry contest. Journalism and the Weekly brought out the writing ability of Marshall Melin, Paula Dwyer, and Martin Wasserman. The musical productions also claimed our attention, taking us into Radio Maid, the Riddle of Isis, Meet the Major, and Me, the President. The Symphonic Choir remained supreme in the city. The R.O.T.C. received an honor rating in the Sixth Corps Area, produced a city champion- ship squad, and a rifle team which placed in city competition. With this remarkable preparation we were ready to show the world what we could do in our last year. At last! 1934 and we were seniors. We walked around with noses in the air and disdainfully ignored everybody outside our class, for now we need have no fear of upper classmen. But we had to adjust ourselves to a new division system. In spite of this we brought many laurels to Roosevelt. John Kouba took second place in the annual Union League Oratorical Contest, and Irvin Kahan won second place in Mayor Kelly's Safety Oratorical Contest. Our essayists also came out on top. Paula Dwyer and Leon Resnikoff won medals in an essay contest sponsored by the Albany Park Post No. 124 of the American Legion, Marion Erdman won third place in the Safety Essay Contest sponsored by Mayor Kelly. Individual members of our class became prominent as club officials. Many of the boys played with the lightweight basketball team which won the city championship for the third consecutive year. In true Roose- velt fashion the music department produced, first, Chonita, and then, the Mikado. The Band did its part by presenting a concert in conjunction with the Hi-Y production, The Womanless Wedding. The editorship of the Voice of the j.Y.L., also, came to us. In this way the senior class went on to bigger and better things. And then, the inevitable day of departure came. Amid much ceremony and excite- ment, the class of june, 1935, passed through the sacred portals of Roosevelt with mingled emotions among which an empty feeling was prominent. But they felt proud that they had given their best to their school, and that the seniors coming after them would be inspired by their record to set higher goals for Roosevelt. STUDENT COUNCIL President , , , ,John Kouba Vice President . . . , .Jack Vihon Secretary . . . .Peggy Hill Roosevelt's Supreme Student Council is an example of a finely developed type of representative student government. Each year has its own sectional council which in turn sends representatives to a higher, or Supreme Council. The various school clubs also send delegates to the Supreme Council. The sectional councils concern themselves chiefly with problems affecting their own year groups, while the Supreme Council deliberates on matters pertaining to the welfare of the school as a whole. Under the leadership of officers thoroughly in sympathy with the necessities and in- terests of the student body, this semester's Supreme Council has done much for the good of the school. Projects such as a Student Activity Day which sixteen schools in the Chicago area attended, the construction of a thoroughly understandable constitu- tion, active participation in the Illinois Student Government Officers' Association Corn- vention held at Kankakee, Illinois, April 26-27, the direction of Clean-Up Week activi- ties among the elementary schools in Roosevelt district, and the organization of a committee to study student government in other Chicago high schools are numbered among the successful ventures of this organization. It is the sincere hope of the retiring officers that future council leaders will find much satisfaction and contentment in working to further the interests of the school and of the student body. 48 Third Row- -R, Katz, A. The dues are expended in various ways. The members of the club enjoy a Freshmen- Sophomorc and a Junior-Senior Social. In addition, the fund permits much extra- curricular work to be carried on. Numerous projects of other organizations not having treasuries of their own are aided Hnancially. Therefore, every student is benefitted directly or indirectly. One of the most important functions of the organization is to aid, especially in a financial way, the Student Council, with which it is closely allied. It bore all of the expense of the Student Council Activity Day which was held April 22, for schools in Chicago and vicinity interested in Student Government. Much of the credit for assemblies must also go to the Civics Club which is re- sponsible for many interesting presentations. The guidance of the Civics Club is entrusted to an executive board of thirteen, elected by the school. It is considered a great honor to hold a position on the board which from year to year has fulfilled its trust so successfully that the Civics Club stands as a model of the constructive work which can be done by a club of the students, by the students, and for the students. 49 2 0 9 Secretaries .S'4'rnm1 Kms' F. It has been this wide-spread appeal more than anything else that has made the paper the vital contribution to school life that it is, but it is not the only reason for its importance. For seventeen semesters, the Weekly has aiiforded an outlet for students of a journal- istic trend of mind. It maintains at all times a large staff of columnists, feature writ- ers, and editorial writers, as well as reporters whose assignments cover every activity at Roosevelt, giving them practice in writing and giving them, too, the invaluable ex- perience of seeing their efforts in print. To those of editorial caliber the paper brings lessons in the leadership and responsibility that are necessary to success in any endeavor. Both editors and reporters are guided by the wise counsel of Miss Lavinia M. Tinker, editorial adviser, and Miss Elisabeth M. Waters and Ewnld H. Schulz, business ad- visers. 52 1 Third Rmu fE. This organization, established under the provisions of the National Defense Act, provides instruction in the rudiments of mili- tary training for the purpose of creating a military reserve in event of a national emer- gency. Morever, it develops responsible, trustworthy men and desirable citizens. Under the guidance of Sergeant Joseph V. Ackerman and the student officers, the R.O.T.C. is always ready to give efficient service upon any occasion when a well organized guard is needed. Any boy joining this organization is offered an opportunity for the development of any 'particular i-nterests he may have in the Held of military science. The R.O.T.C. cadet is enabled to develop qualities of leadership and organization. Among the other possi- bilities open to him are the Rifle Team, Crack Company, Crack Platoon, and Crack Squad, which this year placed second in the Sixth Corps Area efficiency rating. The biggest and most thrilling event of the semester is the Federal Annual Inspection of the whole R.O.T.C., which marks the end of the military year. The Roosevelt R.O.T.C. has been given honor ratingv for the past several years and hopes to receive this rating again this year. 53 I gl lf: Hall Guards I-lfwrlr Iffm' H. Sh-rn. N, Vrixtul. A. Smith. Dorothy Sneedsc As a Girl Reserve I will try to be . . Gracious in manner, Impartial in judgment, Ready for service . . .H In this code, which is repeated by thousands of girls from every part of the globe, are expressed thc ideals of the Girl Reserves-spiritually, mentally, and physically. The Roosevelt branch of this organization tries to uphold these ideals, to face life squarely and to find and give the best. Every member participates in the activities, as the club is divided into six squads, each group planning the program for two meetings. These programs fall i-nto three classes: intellectual, as an interesting lecture on Vocatiofns g spiritual, as the im- pressive candle-lighting recognition ceremonial, and social, as the recent St. Patrick's party. Trips to little known or unusual spots are also included in the Roosevelt Girl Reserves' program. Each spring the members plan a hike and picnic to a nearby woods. Among the red-letter days of this semester is the annual mother and daughters' tea. This term a fashion show, in which the girls themselves modeled, preceded the traditional tea. Another annual event is the farewell luncheon in honor of the gradu- ating members, which is usually served at a well-known hotel. Unlike most clubs, the Girl Reserves is a small unit in a large organization, for it is the junior branch of the Y.W.C.A. Through the Y, it receives much cooperation in making the group a worthwhile club for worthwhile girls. 56 Penaspir 'l'hfr4l Run' I . Nitmvalq. S. HYOWII. I.. Nim-duff. N. Brnullv, Il. TI-IE INTERNATIONAL DRAWING EXCHANGE President Williziiii Condon Vice President Alvin Palmer Secretary Robert Schwarz Corresponding Secretary Rosalie Gemeinhardt Treasurer Chester Zelenka Sergeant-at-arms . Harry Siebold Science a-nd art belong to the whole world, and before them vanish the barriers of nationality. -GOLTHli. The International Drawing Exchange was organized in March, 1928, to exchange drawings and other educational material from all over the world and to bring about international understanding and good-will through education and the medium of thc school. thereby developing toward the people of other countries a spirit of tolerance and friendly cooperation. This student organization has made contacts with all the countries of the world, and it is the ultimate aim to establish a complete net-work of exchange arou-nd the globe. During the past year the International Drawing Exchange exhibit has been on dis- play at the Illinois Host House, Century of Progress Exposition, Chicago Lighting In- stitute, Western Arts Association Convention, Stevens Hotel, Marshall Field 86 Com- pa-ny, The Iiair Store. Lafayette Art Institute. Lafayette, Indiana, and the University of Illinois. On March 20, 1935, four students--Dorothy Smolensky, Irvin Kahan, George Goe- bel, and Lilyan Mell-gave a radio dialogue over N.B.C. pertaining to the International Drawing Exchange. This broadcast was recorded on a phonograph record by Mr. Las- zlo I.. Medgyesy, the Royal Hungarian Consul. BAND Real spirit is essential to the success of any school. To stimulate and to keep alive such spirit has been the aim of the Roosevelt R.O.T.C. Band, a-nd it is for this reason that this organization is invaluable to the school. Since the arrival of Captain,L-1i.gSeaburyin3!April, 1929, the band has grown from an unknown unit of twenty-Hve pieces to a well-known organization of six bands of various graduatio-ns, the smallest of which has more than twenty-five pieces and the largest, a symphonic band, over sixty. Our band has set a precedent in marching manuevers which other schools have been quick to adopt, and in concerts it has set a mode that the best schools are accepting. That our band is gaining an enviable reputation is evidenced not only by its fi-ne show- ing in contests, but by the fact that the band calendar is well-filled and that many requests for its services are received, some even coming from outside the city. The band has never struck a false note in the Symphony of Spirit, and it will always be ready to serve Roosevelt. Few organizations can boast of such a service record. Captain Seabury's slogan of Follow the Baton is good advice to others than musicians. just follow that baton, and see what it means to do what You Can If You Will For Roosevelt. 65 No. 702 I nrilr Ixhru XI.
