WESTERN GEM Magic City of the West Heart, one day, of wilderness Despite thy panic, fire and strife Thou tremblest now, the soul of life. Who has witnessed thy past glory? Who can tell in full thy story? But why care we for yesterday? Thou art ours-to build today. Oft our beauteous lake has sighedg Blessings came with each flood tideg And as new tides shall ebb and flow, More blessings on thee we'll bestow- With the structures we shall raise Ideals for all the world to praise. Wizards though we cannot be More enchanting we'll make thee. The Wand of wisdom we shall wieldg Ambition sown, will beauty yield. As centuries come and centuries go, We'll keep thee-magical Chicago! CROSS foreign seas, from many and varied lands, bearing with them the color and romance of distant nations, have jour- neyed foreign envoys of brotherhood to witness a glorious crea- tion, the product of a majestic metropolis-symbolic of a spirit of international good will, creative invention, and a striving, conquering spirit-the Chicago Century of Progress Exposition. Inzpelled by the beams of magnetic Arcturus, the Fair has already opened its portals to a wondering, appreciative people conglomerated from the four corners of the world. Never in the course of man's existence has he seen a centenary so universal in scope and cooperation. Leviathans of the deep, aeroplanes, automobiles, dirigibles, improved means of transportation bind- ing the world together, tell the tale of how scientipc knowledge, advancing from the basic findings of our venerated forefathers, have wrought-in our humdrum, every-day lives-sweeping changes through education, science, and art. Beautiful architec- tural edijices, forming and housing the second international position of Chicago, furnish tangible evidences of the unsur- passed handiwork of the thinking individual today. Thus, inspired and enchanted by the strange fairyland picture of a A Century of Progress, the 1933 Lantern makes its entree. In presenting the achievements of Roosevelt students, we have ever kept before us the ideal of Progress exemplified in the various fields of educational endeavor. The spirit of the Fair will furnish an animating incentive to our graduates entering the business jqeld or following the trail of a higher education. May we ever continue our pledge to go forward!
