However, with an amazing display of speed, quickness, aggressiveness and teamwork, another City Championship was secured along with Roosevelt ' s first invitation to the Section 1 Super Bowl, to top off a successful 7-2 record against the best teams in the county. The defense played a major role in the season allowing opponents no points in 6 out of 9 games played. The Tasmanian Devils, as they were called, featured a small but devastating line anchored by Bill Tribou, Mike Trifono, Tony Antonecchia, Vin Merle, Vinny Papitto. The offense ' s attack was one of ground control with enough passing to throw the other teams off balance. With quarterbacks Glenn Spina, directing a tough rushing attack, and Craig Paeprer, ruling the air lanes, Roosevelt was tough to stop. The attack was bolstered with the corps of backs, Dave 150 DeGiovanni, Angelo Colosimo, John Vallis, Joe Williams, Tom Gonda, and Mike Walsh. Enabling Roosevelt to maintain their attack through the air with excellent pass catching and blocking were Mike Theiss, Bob Nastasi, Vin Tancora, Mike Fuc- cella, and Tony DeVito. The success of the Tasmanian Devils was due to hard work and dedication. Despite numerous inju- ries and losing Kevin Maher, Tom Starace and Bob Armentano for the season, Roosevelt maintained its tradition as a winner. The Indians won their first wrestling tournament placing 4 cham- pions and 4 second place winners. Bob Weiner along with Bubba Einhorn, Barry Gelbman and Drew Townsend were the winners. The biggest highlight of the season was when the Matmen wres- tled Hastings the W.I.C.C. champs. The Indians, heavy underdogs, wrestled the best match of the season as both teams wrestled to a 24-24 tie. John DeGiorgio taking second place and Rob Weiner taking third place in the Division Championship will both wrestle upstate in the Section I Opens. Other winners were Robert Terrano taking fifth and John Mueller taking fourth place. Even though Roosevelt did not repeat as city cham- pions, they were once again invited to the Section 1 championships. The depth of the Roosevelt bench enabled Coach Flower to maintain an exciting fast-break- ing team with fresh men on the court. Despite the losses of Jim Capowski, Walt Skinner and Billy Williams, we still boasted an impressive bench. This all-around team depth led to changes in start- ing lineup, inspiring keen competition. However, teamwork was very much evident in Roosevelt ' s style of play. The Indians were led by forward Steve Victore, Roosevelt ' s tallest man and best leaper; thus, he was pitted against the best big men in the county holding his own. Additional offense was provided by forwards Craig Paeprer and John Furka. Joe Bohan, Vin Tancora, Tom Gorman, and John Vallis sparkled defensively and provided bulk around the boards. Roosevelt boasted one of the strongest corps of guards in the country, Joe D ' Angiolillo and John Boylan were the team ' s top playmakers with Tom Sivulich, Al Morales, and Chico Gibbons providing scoring and defense. Next year, with the seasoned juniors returning strengthened by the oncoming junior varsity, Roosevelt looks forward to another appearance in the Sections. 164 Steve Victore All-City forward 165 166 X. 167 168 169 JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL «.j .i., ii 3s ; i.j ' awBKas - 1st ROW — Garland Fenner, Joe Kanner, John Tate, Sal Gnppi, Mike Cronin, Jim D Ambrosio 2nd ROW — John Coppola, Steven Suggs, Barry Simons, Eddie Kovac, Larry Jackson, Andy Shaer, Richard Blanc, Bob Murphy, Donald Marcenka, Coach Peter Landman Roosevelt ' s Little Indians, coached by Peter Landman, once again were given a valuable introduction to Roose- velt ' s style of play.
