Physical Education, ROTC Instill Discipline PHYSICAL EDUCATION With the addition of riflery to the Girls' Department, second-year classes received a more diversified program. Wrestling and tumbling, along with the increasingly popular sport of soccer, were added to the Boys' De- partment curriculum. First Aid and Health ,Mi students studied personal hygiene, commu- nity health, sanitation problems, and nutri- tion. The annual administration of the na- tional Physical Fitness Test measured changes in stuclents' physical skills and capabilities. ROTC Shifting emphasis to different phases of military preparation, the ROTC Department increased its activities despite a reduction in size from brigade to battalion. The addi- tion of military etiquette, hygiene, first aid, American military history, counterinsurgency, map analysis, and the psychology of leader- ship broadened the curriculum. During Feb- 413 ruary, the battalion toured the jungle training ,, center at Schofield Barracks while officers l visited Hawaii's major service headquarters. Aside from their daily tasks, the staff served refreshments at school socials and at special PTA func- tions. Mrs. Kikumi Miyasato represented Hawaii at the Arizona School Food Service Association,s annual conference in Phoenix, Arizona, where she spoke on Hawaiiis first Student Intercultural Exchange Program. fill Ever-Increasing CUSTODIANS Aside from fulfilling the demanding duties of campus maintenance, the custodial staff assisted in decorating for graduation and set up equipment at canteens, assemblies, and athletic events throughout the school year. Head Custodian Masakichi Oshiro, as part of his many duties, drove the band truck to football games and to special orchestra and band concerts.
