The acquisition of 32 new Cali-Pros gave students additional expe- rience in using this drawing instrument. Design classes visited the State Planning Com- mission and an engineering firm, while Auto- motive students visited an oil company and car dealers. Students entered projects in the Industrial Arts Students' Exhibit in May. Right: Proper finger placement on the keyboard is the sub- ject of a class exercise conducted by Mr. Richard Kanemoto. Roosevelt students copped first and second places in a poster contest sponsored by the Hawaii League for Nursing. Students displayed paintings, crea- tive stitching, and figurines in office, library, and Commercial Arts Building showcases. Vy- ing for gold keys, students entered paintings, pencil and ink drawings, pottery, jewelry, and graphic designs in the Scholastic Art Show. MUSIC Glee Club members conveyed the Christmas spirit by caroling for tourists at the Princess Kaiulani, Royal Hawaiian, and Edgewater hotels. Introducing the New Year, the choir sang on the educational network,s broadcast of HPau Hana Years. The orchestra per- formed for members of the English Speaking Union, students at Lincoln School, and tourists at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel at Waikiki. In May, band and orchestra soloists participated in the Honolulu Music Festival at McKinley. Wfaf' KAYA, MISS MAE Family Clothing Family Foods Family Living Homemaking FHA Adviser Hobby: Traveling -lb -nnggmmu In a baking demonstration,Miss Mac Kaya assists Nadine Kaneakua in mixing cookie batter COMMERCIAL ARTS Shorthand classes acquired a Class-Master machine which simultaneously broadcasted three different shorthand word rates, en- abling students to write at individual levels. A representative from the State Department of Personnel Services lectured on Civil Service employment opportunities for stenographers and typists. To gain added business experi- ence and knowledge, notehand and shorthand students visited the College of Commerce and Honolulu Business College in November. HOME ECONOMICS Preparing students for more satisfying and useful home lives, guest speakers lectured on family counseling, marriage, alcoholism, dress designing, charm, and the maintenance of electrical appliances. As a Christmas proj- ect, home economics classes decorated their classroom, the office, and library, and baked cookies for faculty members and the crippled children of Shriners' Hospital.
