Third-year classes interpreted foreign literature and circulated self-composed newsletters. At the annual Christmas songfest, students caroled in Japanese, Mandarin, French, German, Spanish, and Latin. Corresponding with pen pals in Europe and the Orient, students familiarized themselves with foreign customs. SOCIAL STUDIES Students became involved with pressing local and international issues by attending the Students for Active Beautification in Hawaii Conference, the Plight of the Cityn Symposium, City Council hearings on Dia- mond Head, Pacific and Asian Affairs Coun- cil seminars, and the University of Hawaii's Listen-in on Vietnam. Visits to Ulu Mau Village and the Bishop Museum supplemented Hawaiiana class instruction by showing the historical influences in present-day Hawaii. Encouraging students to register for the newly initiated Independent Study program, Mr. Franklin Kho briefs interested Edith Heu on its requirements. KHO, MR. In addition to stressing advanced courses, the Mathematics Department emphasized non- college preparatory subjects and the estab- lishment of specific goals in all courses. To increase student interest in mathematics, the faculty administered the Nineteenth Annual Mathematics Examination sponsored nationally by the Mathematical Association of America and the Society of Actuaries. Varied course offerings provided students with a broad background for further learning. Selected juniors and seniors attended weekly seminars held at the University of Hawaii through the Junior Science Apprenticeship Program featuring lectures,films, and experimental labs.
