Mark Twain Hawaii is no longer the idyllic South Sea land of serenity, sway- ing palms, and hula maidens. She has become a modern Hawaii, emerging into the present as a bustling and ever-expanding community. Roosevelt High School has kept pace with this progressive trend by preparing her students to face the challenge of our changing world. Our theme, Modern Hawaii , is represented in this annual by the symbolic designs suggesting the ceremony and dignity of old Ha- waii with the added efticiency and motion of modern ideals today. BARRETT Principal The role of teachers is to guide and train students for their places as the leaders of tomorrow. They help to instill pride and interest in the school and try to act as friends as well as teachers. Coun- seling bewildered students is not an easy task, but they do it with patience and understanding. Giving freely of their own time, they chaperone school functions and advise various school or- ganizations. Every week they attend meetings at which they listen to lectures and loin in dis- cussions in order to learn more about students and how better to teach them. Besides their school work, teachers take part in extracurricular activities which are many and varied. Some spend their free time bowling, golfing, playing tennis, or engaging in other sports in which they have proved proficient. Others add to the enioyment of the community as members of such outstanding civic organiza- tions as the Honolulu Community Theater and the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra. In appreciation for what they have done for the students, we set aside this part of the annual in recognition of the administration. Faculty . . . Bye! .....!!.!!,...,!.,,..,,,,,,, fAn understanding silencej With these hurried words of farewell, members of the Executive Council rush off to N-l, ren- dezvous of the Roosevelt Student Government. Every morning these Execs , who were so care- fully chosen last spring by the student body, give up their precious time to serve us, the students of Roosevelt. These meetings, along with those of the Representative Assembly, were the founda- tion stone upon which the school revolved. They discussed, they planned, they acted. They re- ceived our countless gripes and complaints with big smiles and open arms. These leaders worked untiringly and unceasingly, the results were stu- pendous. Among the many proiects undertaken to raise money for the scholarship fund were two student body dances-the Mistletoe Ball and April Showers. They returned from the Territorial High School Government Association Conference with new ideas and improvements. With overflowing en- thusiasm and vigor, our officers finished the re- mainder ofthe year. MILTON KAM JEAN KOB-ASHIGAWA LEONIE CHONG MRS. M. GAIL TANI AGNES ANN SUZUKI SANDRA YAP Editor-imchief Assistant Editor Copy Editor Renaud Up Hurry up with those layouts! They're due tomorrow and we've got two more sets to do! Where are those photogs with my pictures? These are iust a few of the frequent and urgent requests that were tossed around the room every day by the harried Senior editors of the Round Up staff. A pleasant reminder from Gail Tani, editor-in-chief, sent everyone scattering here and there to finish their iobs. Layouts, galleys, copy-these were new vocabulary terms to the iunior assistants, who struggled along valiantly during the first quarter. But as time passed, they soon learned to respect the impending deadlines, to accept new responsibilities, and to work with speed and efficiency. They were taught to keep mum about their work despite the constant prodding of their friends. However, one aim was kept uppermost, above all the seeming confusion: to publish an annual that would be interesting, factual, and enjoyable to the student body as a whole, now and in the future. At last, we are able to present to you, the students of Roosevelt, our 1957 Round Up, a lasting contribution, in the hopes that YOU may have a year to cherish. Supported by an ardent staff, they worked diligently, week after week, one story after another. They were continuously looking for new ideas. Often as one passed the room, noisy with the incessant clattering of typewriters, he would be filled with an anxiety to peek over the shoulders of the typist to see what he was mischievously chuckling about. Squeals of delight and hushed laughter ushered forth from the homerooms every Friday, as students and teachers alike were deeply engrossed in a Rough Rider. The cub reporters were sent hither and thither to interview various important persons. The experiences gained through these errands, and also through rush- ing to meet deadlines and writing interesting stories, gave them a journalistic training that made this activity well worth while. First class honors were received from the National Scholastic Press Association and Medalist Honors, the top award for newspaper distinction in the nation, were awarded the Rough Rider this year by the Columbia Scholastic Press Associations fa-A JO-ANN LAM SHERILYN LIM First Page Editor Second Page Editor HERBERT KIDO Fourth Page Editor FLORIA sANto Business Manager Behind the scenes: Hustiing to meet the Wednesday deadline are these conscientious Rough Rider editors. HORNE Adviser Looming into sight in September of 1953 was the Aloha Tower of Roosevelt, the portals of our new home opened to us. At this time we were awed by the wonderment of new adventures and the maze of new faces. Nestled atop Makiki Heights, Roosevelt began to guide us along the rocky road of learning. School days offered fun and learning that were mixed with a few worries. As Sophomores we were malihi- nis . . . bewildered, yet prepared to assume the responsi- bilities and share in the rewards as Rough Riders. This confusion soon disappeared, for before we knew it, we had plunged into the Howdy Doody Hop, canteens, athletics and exams. Our introductory year came to a close, we were lifted from stations of lowly Sophomores to positions of seeming im- portance. We were whirled through a glorious Junior Picnic and ran head-on into The Blue Mirage , our Junior Prom. As kamaainas we were no longer last to assemblies and rallies, no longer lost sheep wandering about the school in search of precious bits of news concerning school activities which somehow always seemed to be kept from our ears. As underclassmen we envied the Seniors, but at last we reached the lofty heights of The Upperclassmen. We experienced a life that will linger forever in our mem- ories. All our efforts in chemistry and physics experiments, reference essays, Latin coniugations, and exams will be represented by our treasured diplomas. We will always remember that our three happy high school years literally flew by. Some of those precious moments can never be relived, but neither can they be forgotten. Before us is the challenge of a growing Hawaii. May the learning and valuable character we have gained at Roosevelt be applied to the future and may Hawaii benefit as never before. These Jovial Juniors shouldered greater responsibilities, and amid all the activities and gaiety they acquired a store of knowledge and experience which will help them in their chosen occupations. ln required courses, they learned the history of our country and broadened their knowledge of American literature. Having unseltishly given their time and effort as hall and traffic supervision workers, they were compensated for their toil with the Junior Picnic. Highlighting this picnic, held in Kailua, was the election of Mr. and Miss Junior Class. Finally the greatest moment of their school year arrived- the long-awaited Junior Prom. This enchanted night was J accented by the crowning of their'King and Queen. As the year came to a close, they looked to the future and shut out the past except for their class rings, which they purchased for nostalgic remembrance of their school years. KENNETH MAEDA President LESLIE HIRAOKA Treasurer MRS. T. HARRIS Adviser 80 . MARSHALL Eto NANCY HANE Vice-President Secretary Sw Although a bit bewildered by the potpourri of Roosevelt life, a new class of Sophomores zestfully plunged in and came up with a favorable curriculum. They waged war with patho- genic diseases and bacteria, fought with Bismarck and Napo- leon, tackled manana, amamus and the circumflex, pi and the right angle, ROTC and PE - all with the vigor that marks the Sophomores. Each new battle, algebra problem, or word, added to the store of knowledge that they have been building throughout the years. These book-laden individuals worked hard, and with the help of experienced teachers and capable class officers, were able to make the grade. But by no means was there toil and drudgery. The year was filled with canteens, club activities, pep rallies, and exciting inter-school competitions. The climax of the year was the highly successful Sophomore Mixer. Held on the campus, it consisted of dancing, competi- tive games, and a talent show. Having completed a wonderful first year, these future Jun- iors look ahead with anticipation. Many people have won- dered how we are able to maintain our enviable position as a top school. A team is only as good as its coaches, and Roosevelt's mentors are the best in the league. These men and women take green, inexperienced students and mold them into powerful, co-ordi- nated, and spirited groups. Whether it was the championship football team, or the determined baseball team, the same fighting spirit com- pelled the respect and admiration of the specta- tors. The many hours our able coaches have spent as- sisting, guiding, and oftering encouragement have not only made good teams, but have also set standards and ideals for us to follow in our later lives. The boys literally plowed through all opposition to retain the coveted Interscholastic League Championship crown. After beating Kaimuki easily, the Riders rolled over St. Louis and Iolani in succession and then, with the skill of champions, they beat Punahou, enabling us to keep the Paintbrush Trophy. Con- fident and assured, Roosevelt defeated McKinley, Kamehameha, and Farrington to end the season unbeaten and triumphant. Proving their complete superiority, they once again trounced Punahou in the Thanksgiving Day game. The final feather in our cap was the victory over the rural cham- pions, Kahuku High School, in the Shrine game. From a team composed of almost all inexperienced players, we rose to the top due to the work of the best coach in the league, Edmund Ticky Vasconcellos. With the help of assistant coaches Kai Bong Chung and Johnny Wright, he pulled the boys together to form one of the finest foot- ball teams ever to represent Roosevelt. The team was champion not only in maneu- vers, but also in sportsmanship and courtesy. This can be attributed to the integrity of the man who taught these qualities. In an address to the student body the coach explained the team's motivating creed: lf you win, be generous, if you lose, be good sports. Baud and Otwlwolna The Roosevelt Band has moved up in the world from the old band room in the field to the new music building above the field. Perhaps that is why they play- ed more enthusiastically than ever this year at the football games and pep rallies. The highlight of the year was the Spring Concert with soloists Donald Nelsen, Larry Whiteside, and Wilfred lchiyama. The applause of the audience was tre- mendous as the band added their bit to the spring atmosphere. X iirst row, tolokahi, . Lau, H. ,av-' loft to right: M. Tabladillo, C. Osumi, E. Okashige, E. With the dovvnbeat of the baton the Annual Spring Concert of the Roosevelt High School Or- chestra began. Weeks ot practice resulted in a successful blend of the different instruments harmonizing beau- tiful numbers as Skyscraper Fantasy and Serenade. Guest soloist Mildred Tolentino enthralled the au- dience with Deep in My Heart and Temptation. Mr. Floyd Uchima led the hard-working orchestra to this grand finale, terminating a highly success- ful year. TEV Cheering, yelling, and tension . . . ye the band plays on. .....
