Yet, are the students conscious ot this tact? Do they know that Mr. Vasconcellos golfed his way to the D.P.l. tournament championship with a low score of 77? Teachers partake not only in sports but also in civic and community activi- ties. The Honolulu Community Theater and the Honolulu Symphony are but two of the many organizations supported by and including fac- ulty members. Working without recognition but with the purpose of establishing a uniform teaching curriculum, a group of interested teachers led by Mrs. Hargrave met many times to work on evaluating obiectives of existing curricula in the secondary schools. Similar work is being done in other schools. Teaching has many advantages. Perhaps if Mrs. Jackson hadn't been a teacher, she might not have correctly answered the question which gave her a- tree airplane trip to the mainland. Our teachers-aren't they tops? How often, class of '55, have we heard our Alma Mater during our days here? . . . at football games, pep rallies, assemblies, and other memora- ble occasions. Here is a quick review of some activities in which we participated, We were the first sopho- more class to hold a mixer. Canteens and orienta- tion assemblies helped us get acquainted with life here at Roosevelt. Cupid's Paradise, the iunior prom, was one of the highlights of our iunior year. As a reward for hall supervision and traffic duty, we enjoyed a picnic at Kailua. Our much anticipated banquet at Lau Yee Chai was the outstanding event of our senior year. Be- sides this, our lively class sponsored a skating party in September. We earned our annual class picnic by cafeteria supervision. In June we had our commencement ball. Graduation on June 5 in our stadium climaxed three busy, productive years. Many of us shall try to reach higher goals but we will always remember wonderful days filled with activities. To each of us, to the Class of '55, All hail! Hail! Hall! i18 . sf: aff, ir-,ii Ji'-Q5w1b A'-'35 A ' - 1 , f f 1 . 1 'iv J? by ti' ,iv , 'mm E A f ,,..,X -TL ff W! Sponsoring the Howdy Doody Hop for the sophomores, they started this new year by making the newcomers feel at home. The traditional ordering of class jewelry made them feel important, for now they were juniors. The standardized tower crest patterned the rings, pins, and necklaces. The Junior Jubilee was held at Kalama Beach and they enjoyed the array of talent of classmates, the various games, and, of course, the good food at lunch. The highlight was the crowning of George Purdy and Ann Lai as Mr, and Miss Junior Class. The picnic was a well- l43l .1 4 x earned reward for the girls' participation in noon hall supervision and the boys' supervision of street traffic. For the first time in the history of Roosevelt High School, a Junior-Senior Prom was held. The juniors were hosts to the seniors at the Ala Wai Clubhouse. Enchanted Evening set the mood for that unforgettable night. Amidst all the frivolity, the juniors were studying and learning, too. They were prepar- ing themselves to meet their senior year with wisdom, new ideas, and higher goals. Well established, these juniors are anxiously awaiting their last year of high school when they will be the leaders. I 77007190 4 ,- A iam .99 Of yggifkkf 5710 L ,MJ W- fw,mfc Q. Circle: Mrs' Eager sophomores approached our familiar red and gold dome on September 2, 1954. They quickly adiusted themselves to hi-school life with the aid of their orientation classes. The Howdy Doody Hop, sponsored by the Junior Class, provided a time for these sopho- mores to acquaint themselves with each other. First aid, etiquette, family relationships, son- nets, essays, gerunds, osmosis and the wonders of ancient Greece and Rome . . . these were mastered by the sophomores. Achievement tests, aptitude tests, movies and a study of the nation's colleges and universities comprised the vocational guidance course. The long-awaited Sophomore Mixer was held on April l, 1955. Highlights of this mem- orable afifair were the results of the horse elec- tion and the selection of Mr. and Miss Sopho- more Class, Mark Holbrook and Michele Black. Homework, club meetings, formals, films . . . all these made up the program for them during their first year of high school, and they are anxiously awaiting their junior year when they will add another year of wisdom and privi- leges. l55l b higavtla sident- Jean K0 as Treas Hrwnhn Z IN' 'IO-28, MISS ELIZABETH KAUKA. Plenty. The Council is the backbone of our student body government and regulates all matters con- cerning students. Along with the Representative Assem- bly, this group speaks for the students. Are the hallways crowded beyond endurance during class changes? ' Do the students push and shove beyond reason for the afternoon bus? Does the Salvation Army need canned goods for its Thanksgiving distribution? Should the incoming sophomores be welcomed in an appropriate manner? These are only a few of the more important problems that the Council was confronted with. Meetings result in discussions. Discussions result in plans. Plans result in action. Working together, members of the Council ironed out the problems of the students and made school life more pleasant. . . . and that's what makes the Roosevelt student body functiorfimoqthx . A new look in pep rallies . . . the appearance of Vicky Young, popular recording star, pantomimes by the Four Beeps and a Bop, and a jalopy pa- rade provided the variety and drawing attrac- tion of these rallies. Their success is a tine ex- ample of the type of work all the standing committees did. Other assemblies, including the annual Thanksgiving and patriotic assemblies and stu- dent body movies, were run oft smoothly. The ID committee provided every student with a standard means ot identification. Other reliable committees took care of the student body elec- tions and the distribution of athletic equipment during the lunch hour. We even had a hospi- tality committee which extended cordial greet- ings to visitors or newcomers and sent con- dolences to those who needed sympathy. Every class had a share in the work as shown by the representation of the sophomores, iuniors, and seniors in the ISC and Oahu Youth Council. DELEGATES. Seated, Lett to Right: D. In Sep- tember the assistants started to learn the trade. All year the staff worked with one objective in mind: to produce an annual which would be looked at and cherished tor many years to come. Working together with this common goal in mind, the members ot the Round-Up became like one big, happy family. You could teel the friendly atmosphere about N3 . . . until the air was shattered with the dreaded call of dead- Iine ! Then every student expended his utmost to put out the kind ot work that made this year's annual so extraordinary. Yet amidst all the sweat and toil there was always time for that ever-present hum of con- Yg. yersation. The student-managed newspaper covered everything from the latest news to personali- ties-even Doodles were featured. Leading the staff during the first semester was Finis Jhung, while David Nakasone edited the second semester. On make-up days, while paper was blowing and reporters were fran- tically running around the room, page editors with their eager assistants painstakingly at- tempted to edit TO inch stories into 4 inch spaces on the make-up sheets. Other jobs such as writing, typing, rewriting and interviewing were done, with the weekly deadline arriving all too soon, and too often. However, it was not all work and no play Proofreader for the staff. The room was always buzzing with chatter amidst the usual groans. Some of the members of the Rough Rider were comedi- ans, and their gems of wisdom helped to make the depressed writer feel as though life were once more worth living. The usual problems arose but the staff ironed them out. One of these problems was the small staff. However, the cub reporters were quick to learn and the paper commenced to function smoothly most of the time. For certain occasions, special editions of the Rough Rider were printed. The students ex- pressed their appreciation of this weekly news- paper by showing their disappointment when- ever there was a holiday or it was exam week, and the staff was unable to put out an edition. Roosevelt wasn't even rated among the top four in pre-season predictions! Yet at the onset of season play, the Red and Gold suddenly iumped into contention for the crown by decisively defeating Kam, Far- rington, and Kaimuki and displaying surprising offensive power onthe ground. Off tackle shots and quick openers over the guard slots soon became our much feared trademarks. Yes, the Roosevelt football varsity again sur- prised everyone with a thrilling and successful season of play. Finishing in a tie for second fastball place with Iolani, Roosevelt gained the distinc- tion of being the only public school among the top four. Most significant in the season's performances was the smashing of our ten year iinx with St. Louis. The Red and Gold wasted little time in disposing of the Crusaders in an action-packed contest that saw our cheering section led by former alumni. Another victory against St. Louis in the annual Thanksgiving Day Doubleheader climaxed the successful season onthe gridiron. SEASON'S RECORD Roosevelt Opponent 20 . . Kamehameha . . . O 38 . . But thanks to the brilliant coaching ot Peter Chun, the under- rated Rider squad overcame their handicaps and gained invaluable experience as the sea- son progressed, The hnal product of countless drills and practice sessions displayed itself when the boys in the flashy red and gold uni- 312 4 forms defeated the championship team Mc Kinlev in the last game of the Round Robin to clinch a tie for second place Their impre sive performances were due not only to the fine coaching but also to the strong teamwork ofthe players, so evident in the win- ning combination of George Naukana, William Young, Henry Pang, Allan Yapp, Anthony An- drade, and Monte Trepanier, Naukana and Young, elected interscholastii all-stars, will be back next year with hve othe members ot this year's squad. Working as a team, Coach Vasconcellos' spikesters easily gained the championship tor the second consecutive Year. The team, led by co-captains Rufus Shufl and Henry Pang, worked diligently every day at the Roosevelt oval. Starting practice early in January, the team touncl many potentials such as Mike Kelly, Keith MacDonald, Cliftord Yee and Ken Macleod who performed as real Riders. This year's squad had a brilliant start, breaking seven records in the Sixth Annual Public High School Meet. Among the record breakers were Rutus Shutll, TOO and 220, Henry Pang, shot put, Douglas Anduha, milep Karl Van Etten, hurdles, and Julian Monte, pole vault. Following the Public School Meet, the Rough Riders went on to capture the Junskol Meet for the third consecutive year. Continuing to bowl over all opposition, Roosevelt's spikesters overwhelmed the other teams to capture their first victory in the cov- eted Cornell relays, leaving second place Puna- hou 2323 points behind. Roosevelt went on to capture the Senior lnterscholastic Meet. Coach Vasconcellos and his two assistants did an outstanding job in building up the team to the championship. When '56 comes around, these coaches will be out there with the boys to retain the crown. ill: K v 1 ,.- '-'via-.MU -- x If v f X M V f . In V '7.Jt w-ar. X wm,.,rv ---..,,, ,,-'. -nf A ,. Composed al- most entirely of inexperienced players, the Rough Riders were outclasseol and outplayed throughout the season. However, they con- tinued to battle every inch ot the way and never gave up hope or stopped exerting their best efforts. Although their hustle and team spirit were not enough to overcome the su- perior playing ot their opponents, they cer- tainly deserve commendation for helping to keep the great American pastime alive at Roosevelt. The team was composed of four seniors, Captain lvanelle Hoe, Lois Fu- kuda, Sandra Anderson, Darlene Rash, and one junior, Barbara Stevenson. They may have lacked number as a group, but the quality was certainly present, and the girls proved the power of quality before quantity by tying Mc- Kinley in their first dual meet and defeating Farrington in their second. Led by lvanelle Hoe, outstanding girl swim- mer of the year, the team progressed nicely through another season, always placing good sportsmanship and conduct first. With seven seniors torm- ing the nucleus of the team, the Riders dis- played the usual high degree of team spirit and sportsmanship. Next year, the stellar performances of cap- tains lvan Miyamoto and Ronald Tsuchiya, Guy Matsuguma, Mel Carr, Robert Matsunaka, Bob Vogt and Hideo Kawahara will be sorely missed.
