For this reason I have a special interest in this class. The past three years have been filled with activities of educational value as well as those of a recreational nature. As participants you have, I am sure, profited greatly. You have, no doubt, also developed many lifelong friendships which will mean more and more as the years go by. We will remember the graduates of 1954 for their enthusiasm in our program and their cooperation at all times. Our Aloha goes with you as you proceed to schools of higher learning or accept employment in a field of your choice. ,4,Qff!!.LVEbi' Principal Counter clockwise Miss Hortense Schwallie Vice-principal, Miss Evlyne Johnson, Registrar, Miss Grena ville Hatch Librarian Miss Toshie Nishimura Secretary, Mrs. Esther Crandall, Account Clerk. Why can't we stay behind the auditorium during lunch hour? . . . But my foot was already in the doorway when the tardy bell rang! To some of us, our counselors represented discipline, and the sight of the monitor bearing the familiar pink pass which summoned us out of class meant detention assignment. To others, they were patient and sagacious advisors. To most of us, however, they were a combination of both. We shall remember, with amusement, how the mere sight of them sent lingering stu- dents scurrying out of the cafeteria. Most of all, however, we shall remember them with warm affection and gratitude as our friends. He that loves reading has everything within his reach. -William Godwin ENGLISH. This enthusiastic council started planning the year's activities before school began, meeting on Sundays during sum- mer vacation. To help sophomores and other newcomers, an orientation week was instituted, and coun- cil members assumed the responsibility of ac- quainting the new students with the school. A campaign was waged against vandalism of walls, desks, and chairs. No . . . those pictures weren't for criminal records! All new students were photographed for school identification cards which were pre- sented at school functions and at the library. Raising money for the scholarship fund was another of the Council's proiects. Several movies were shown to the student body, and the annual Mistletoe Ball and April Showers formals were sponsored. The question ot boys' dress for tiorrnals was a topic of much debate, and the Council, working closely with the Rep- resentative Assembly, encouraged the boys to wear more practical business suits to formats instead of dinner jackets. The most memorable event of this year was the visit of Vice-President Richard Nixon who spoke to the student body at the school sta- dium. The eftorts of the Executive Council made this visit possible, and the students greatly appreciated this privilege. 4'-l MOE i it 1 CHARLES MARSHMAN BETSY FUJIMOTO DIANE HALM BOBBY ODARE Senior Councilor Junior Councilor Sophomore Councilor Councilor ot Large BARBARA FULLER CAROLINE MATANO IRVING GOTO MISS MARION CONRAD Rough Rider Editor Rough Rider Editor Round-Up Editor Adviser ..f REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY. Not again! This is the sixth time! Amidst moans and groans punctuated by laughter, iokes, and deadline worries, the Round-Up staft worked hard to produce the best yearbook ever. Besides regular work on the annual, staff members made money by printing names on Christmas cards and annual covers with the Kingsley machine. It was fun, it was worrisome, it was work, lRVlNG GOTO but it was worth it. We learned a lot in the Editor process, and it is with pride that we present the finished product. Our hope is that this pic- torial record of your days at Roosevelt will be cherished and looked upon with nostalgia in the years to come. JANICE IBARA JEANETTE ETO CLAIRE MORITA MRS. The Reveries, the Cinderellas, and the Akalanis made up Roo- sevelt's junior Y-Teens. They participated in many Y.W.C.A. activities such as donating money for toys for the Kinau School for Retarded Children, having socials, and camp- ing at Halekipa and the Beach Club. Through- out the year these activities helped the girls to fulfill the goals of the Y-Teens: To grow as a person. To grow in friendship with people of all races, religions, and nationalities. To grow in the love and knowledge of God. S 2'76Cd4. This year there were only two sophomore clubs, Hui Ilima and the Stardusters. The girls became used to meeting at school, writing notices in the bulletin, and becoming a part of the whole Roosevelt Y-Teen organization. Their proi- ects were based on the emphasis which the Y.W.C.A. places on social concern, religion, health, family relations, work, and art. The sophomore Y-Teens worked hard to do their share in such organized Y-Teen activities as the annual carnival and the Roosevelt Y-Teen benefit dance. Roosevelt began season play with a bang, and continued to take local basketball fans for a merry ride. Sports writers called this our greatest team since l937 and, indeed, it .vas No team had made such a stirring bid for the championship as Roosevelts colorful, cosmopolitan cagers of l953, who were undefeated in season plav. John Chong's raoid-fire dribbling and our eager, rambunctious fans often ioined forces to please the large foilowings. These same enthusiasts later shared our grief when McKinley defeated us in the additional playoffs after the Round Robin to take the championship. Although Hicks and Neves were elected Interscholastic All-Stars, there were no individual stars on the team. The greater part of success was due to teamwork. Steve Neves, Paul Bruhn, Homer Barber, David Hicks, and John Chong performed as real Riders. 78 Y' . No previous team in Roosevelt's track his- tory can compare with this year's group of record-breaking individuals. Led by the star-studded seniors, 1954's Red and Gold cinder squad shattered Punahou's long domination by a decisive triumph in the Senior Interscholastic meet, and successfully defended its Junior lnterscholastic title. Roosevelt first established itself as a domi- nant track power when Coach Edmund Vas- concellos' well-conditioned spikesters easily outdistanced all competition in the annual Public Schools Meet. Rufus Shuff, Pete Lom- bard, Richard Bryant, Bob O'Dare, Clarence Armstrong, Julian Monte, Henry Pang, and Coppin Colburn accounted for eight of the eleven record-smashing performances. These reliable lettermen were the key elements all through the season, but it was the depth and surprising versatility of the team which made the difference in the bid for the champion- ship. The Rough Riders entered the Cornell Re- lays facing a favored Punahou, and threat- ened to disprove the experts with another record-breaking victory in the four mile relay. The hand of fate intervened, however, and Roosevelt was prevented from capturing the coveted relays when a baton was dropped. Had it not been for this unfortunate incident, the Red and Gold track team might have emerged with an undefeated record in the major interscholastic meets. Pete Lombard was awarded the G. D. Crozier Award for his outstanding performance in this meet. TRACK TEAM. Front Row, Left to Right: R. Shuff, M. K. Kim, T. Maeda, C. Armstrong, T. Miyashiro, G. Kaleikini, D. Anduha, J. Upper-classmen who expected to see lost, bewildered sophomores were pleasantly surprised when the newcomers, aided by an orientation program, quickly adiusted themselves and emerged as one of the most active sophomore classes in recent years. Getting acquainted was easy because of the Howdy Doody Hop, which was sponsored by the Executive Council for the newcomers. Soon after, zealous candidates for sophomore class officers cam- paigned vigorously with posters, ribbons, and speeches. W l X 1 Fx kg! I -r'T'7' Kg GEORGE KALEIKINI CAROLYN KEYES President Vice President 66444 af 55 Brand-new juniors were greeted, upon their return to Roosevelt, by the sight of the familiar red and gold dome which made them feel right at home. Already well-versed in the ways of high school life, they settled down quickly to a year of added privileges, re- sponsibilities, and studies. First on the list of privileges was the ordering of class jewelry. The standardized tower crest patterned the rings, pins, and neck- laces. Tired, tanned, tousled, but happy juniors were the end result of the class picnic held at Kalama on November 25. The picnic was a reward for the juniors' faithful execution of hall supervision and safety patrol duties. Handsome, muscular boys and excited, pretty girls were candidates in the customary Mr. and Miss Junior Class contest, and the announcement of the winners was the high- light of the picnic. Pink, cherubic cupids and vivid, red valentines formed the motif for Cupid's Paradise, the junior prom. The crowning of the Junior Prom King and Queen, chosen by popular ballot, was the attraction during the intermission of the February l3th dance. While the juniors were enjoying themselves, they were also studying hard, preparing for the future. The first students to study U. S. history during their junior year, they often compared notes with the seniors. Another required course, vocational guidance, was especially helpful in preparing the juniors to look ahead to the future. Movies, personal aptitude tests, speakers from various occupational fields, and a study of the nation's colleges and univer- sities were the main features of this course. The hard grind of study, the big social events, the experience of planning and organizing, the participation in scholastic, social, musical, and athletic organizations, the pleasant fellowship of school life . . . all have been a part of the education that is pre- paring next year's seniors to be tomorrow's leaders and citizens. 103 ,su 0' Q' i -f' ELINOR KITAMURA Secretory ELEANOR KOBASHKBAWA Treasurer MRS.
