nineteen hundred Fifty-six ROOSEVELT hiGh school ypsilanti, michigan In memory of the wonderful years we have spent here in the search for knowledge; in appreciation of the hosts of intimate friends and companions first met within these halls; and in thanks for the countless extra hours given by the faculty and administration on our behalf; we, the senior class of nineteen hundred fifty six, dedicate this, our yearbook, to Roosevelt High School, its students, its faculty and its friends. We promised ourselves that we would do more in the next four years than we had dreamed of in the previous eight school years. We kept our promise, As freshmen in ’52 we first met our first sponsors Miss Virginia Cooper, Mrs. Florence Crouch, and Mrs, Ruth Shelkum, who in turn introduced us to our first dime dances, senior high fun nites, and the highlight of the year, our first high school dance the Spring Party. In 1953, we got the works at the Sophomore Reception and took our turn at sponsoring the annual Christmas Party, which we dubbed the Sn owflake Swirl. In the fall of our junior year, we welcomed the class of 757 at the annual Sophomore Reception. The thespians among us took to the stage for the Play Festival. The class picnic at Edgewater Park concluded our last year as under- classmen, Then came the busiest year of them all. We began by guarding The Stairs. Then came Homecoming, fads, plays, parties galore, at last - the trip, the Prom, and finally, Graduation! Suddenly it was over. We were alumni. And in the midst of joyful-tearful farewells and the promises of reunion, the feeling of relief that it was all over gradually became regret, and the finality of our leaving was softened somewhat by the realization that once again, this was just the beginning. The Volume of Life lay before us. We had just turned the first page. SENIORS MARLYS ACKERMAN Echo 4 J. Under the direction of Miss Thelma McAndless, Roosevelt students publish a tri-weekly newspaper, THE ROUGH RIDER, and the yearbook, ECHO. Members of the ROUGH RIDER staff are always exercising their nose for news. The Riders work frantically to beat deadlines, They struggle over the units in a headline. They write and re-write stories until the style satisfies. They lay out a page and then study it - striving always for effective make-up. It's not easy to put out a paper, but there's always an eager staff standing by. Roosevelt seniors work tirelessly each year to compile a yearbook, which students may keep as a rememberance of high school days. These young Janet LaChance men and women acquire experience in planning Thelma McAndless Editor and publishing. They discover the mysteries of Advisor pre-screening and copy editing. Others learn how to snip and paste pictures. Some find their forte in selling. Roosevelt's five Boy and Girl Scout organizations offer a variety of activities for interested students. The Girl Scouts follow a varied program, but they take time out to build up their treasury through the annual cookie and candy sale. The Senior Scouts, a branch of the Girl Scouts, have devoted most of their time to the study of nursing, regularly assisting in the children's ward at University Hospital. The Mariner Scouts study navigation, and this year plan to take a trip to Holland, Michigan, to study boating firsthand. For boys, Roosevelt's troop 31 offers a chance to gain valuable knowledge of wood lore and camping. The Explorer Scouts, open to older boys, emphasizes vocational training, community service, and outdoor skills. After a close 20-18 game with Clinton, the Roosevelt gridders gained momentum and climaxed the season by tying arch-rival Lincoln and defeating always-tough University High, Although they finished seventh in the league standings, the Rough Riders determined the Huron League championship by their 13-13 tie with League- leading Lincoln, Highlight of the season was the 14-12 victory over U High, with the Rough Riders scoring both their touchdowns in the final period of play. The loss of 14 varsity lettermen will be partly cancelled by the return of 11 letter- men and the addition of this year's Little Rough Riders, who, under the coaching of Harlan Minor, made a good showing in numerous practice scrimmages. fifty-three John Falk - Co-captain ‘é Carl Henderson - Co-captain Regional and District Trophies Under the guidance of Coach Art Walker, the RHS basketeers chalked up a Winning season by capturing District and Regional championships. The 1956 event took place after the Rough Rider quintet swept through the District tilt, overpowering Dexter, 51-35, U-High, 56-48, and Lincoln, 76-51. They then took the measure of Leslie, 48-41, downed Morenci, 57-50, and romped over A. E. Smith, 68-44, to clinch the Regional cup.
