At the start of school the Sophomores must accustom themselves to the strange building, new teachers, and dif- ferent rules, but at the end of the year they feel as though they've been here for years. The Sophornores begin to build up their class treasury for future needs. During the year, they are given various tests to determine their aptitudes and intellectual capacities. They have orientation classes in which they discuss teen-age problems. In English they have Library Science in which they learn how to use our library to their best advantage. All in all, this is a busy year for these newcomers to Roosevelt High. This year the Juniors have taken on added responsibilities in school and club work as a step toward their last year in High School. They have worked hard so they will be ready to step into the place left by the class of '5'I. They have been very industrious this year in raising money for their main goal, the Junior-Senior Prom. They eamed money for a car wash, pencil sales, a Junior Play, and class dues. There won't be many spare moments for them as they will carry an extra class this year, Health and Safety. The second semester they are given Spelling, English, and Math tests to determine if they have mastered these subjects well enough to graduate. Many seniors are in band and chorus: they also fill the positions of Editor of Tomahawk, President of Braves, Sunshine, and Student Council. The yearbook is entirely in charge of the seniors. All these have made a memorable climax to twelve years of school. Each year has been a step up the ladder of learning, preparing us for the time when we leave our school years behind and take our places in the adult world. Especially is our cheering block noted during the basketball season. The student body feels that even though our record of victories was smaller this year, it is not winning that is most important, but the manner in which the contest is played and the spirit of competition. In a few years, the spectacular hole-in-one on the green, last second lay-up shot on the hardwood, fast sixty-yard dash for the winning touchdown, snap of the tape as the hundred-yard dash is completed, and the last cross -country meet will be only memories. The thrill of the last moment of excitement will be forgotten. ,X JA 010 UN g g 47 .limbs siriiiiifs ,, -TEAM Row I. R. I-Iively, D. Sell, L. Noe, D. Amberg, D. Miles, D. Tolley, D. Hively. Row II. BA KETBALL With the majority of the players seeing varsity action for the first time, the Tioga Indians were not able to chalk up a very impressive winning column. However, many of the games they lost were by a close margin and in over- times. There were three retuming lettermen--David Ring, senior, and Jim Zerface and Ted Lane, juniors. Their most impressive victory was the winning of the Logansport Holiday Tourney. In the first game they beat Flora and the next evening Logansport went down before the Indians' mighty onslaught. Some other teams defeated by the Bastin men were Muncie Burris, Brookston, Delphi, Warsaw, and North Central of Indianapolis. 50 W B-TEAM ROW I: W. West, L. Gosman, D. Pnystup, J. Hardesty, J. Our mascot, Monti-Hi-Hi, held aloft the scalp of our opponent while the three spirited yell leaders led this block in songs and cheers. Wearing long-sleeved, white shirts, red gloves, and headbands with red feathers, the yell block was an impres- sive sight. ,-1' rd 4 ,Q l s 5' N 'A'i ' 'L -is 5+ -4?-h To the right are three good reasons for the pep and enthusiasm shown by the yell block Senior captain Esther Johnson, in her second year as yell leader, with her lively spirit and keen enthusiasm, was an inspirational force to the block and team. Junior Karen Dahlenburg is to be commended for the fine job she did in urging the block on to greater efforts as she served her first year as yell leader. Sophomore Pricilla Tyler also did a splendid job of yell leading and contributed equally to the success of the yell block. 55 .S A -133' 5 N.. .ffl 1 if -vw . A ' K . f 551154. VX? . This year its membership totals eighteen--percussion, woodwind, and wind instruments. Whenever a task can- not be carried through by Monti's larger group, the T-Ten takes over. This year it has served as pep band for the Monon-vs-Monticello clash of December 18, and lent its spirited music to a pep rally. Although the organization had no definite engagement schedule, the T -Ten was always available in a pinch to provide its special brand of l'l'll.lSlC. 60 kwa f, ps, 'V .Q 3' mx SPRI G CDNCERT An outstanding student program is the Spring Concert presented by the chorus and band. Last year the concert contained two added features--colorful backdrop pictures presented by the Art Department under the direction of Charles Havey and a popular guest conductor, Coach Iolm Bastin. The chorus, of one hundred voices, entered the darkened auditorium to the strains of the traditional 'Halls of 1vy, As the auditorium was again lighted the chorus sang O What A Beautiful Morning. After the second num- ber offered by the girls, Peop1e Will Say We 're In Love the spotlight played on a canvas simulation of a surrey and a couple, while the boy's chorus sang Surrey With The Fringe On Top. Another huge painting served as the backdrop for the finale-- Oklahoma. 'l'he second half of the concert was given by the band. Pavanne opened their portion of the program with Tom Mohler as trumpet soloist and Kay Piatt as clarinet soloist. Spotlight On The Piano with band accom- paniment featured Sandy Dyer at the keyboard. After the number, Big Joe The Tuba, which exhibited the skills of the sousaphone section, John Bastin stepped forward to conduct very ably the novelty number Lassus Trombone. The group brought the SpringConcerr, which is wholly under the expert direction of Mr. Perdue Powlen, to a close with the stirring march Colosus ot Co- 1umbia. 61 if HRISTMAS PROGRAM O Come All Ye Faithtur'---the strains of this ageless hymn float through Staggs gym as the students from grades one through twelve march in to tell in song and Scripture the old, but ever new, Christmas story. Added to the songs and Scriptures are the living pictures which depict the special events of that day and night. awmvxfsms,QiQ : DIRECTOR Perdue Powlen, ACCOMPANIST Beverly Bowsher. ROW I: R.
