Memories A na' Scattered Pictures This year's yearbook theme was 7'7 Changes at Roosevelt. There were many changes in every division of the school. The annual staff was able to find seventy-seven changes to match the year of publication. Some of the changes were small. while others were large, but all helped to make Roosevelt the school it was in the year 1977. ln the Elementary two of the changes occurred in rotation of teachers. The fourth and fifth grade teachers rotated rather than the students, and the first through third rotated too, the first time for either students or teachers. In the lunior High department the P.E. and athletic classes were divided by grade rather than by boys and girls. There were also many changes in the High School. The band had new feature twirlers this year and also brought home a rating from contest for the first time under the guidance of the new band director. The five varsity cheerleaders all graduated for the first time in many years and there was a new school song this year. The gym floor was repainted and the typing classes receivedall new typewriters. Along with the new salad bar and many other new happenings. these were the Changes of '77 . We wish Mr. Smith much happiness in the future, for he has brought much happiness to Roosevelt. ALLEN HARMAN was Junior High Principal this year and was the coordinator of all seventh grade and eighth grade activities. Mr. Harman assisted the High School Principal in registration and scheduling of students and also taught classes half a day. Allen Harman is certainly one of the warmest, friendliest men in the entire school. We are sure that he will be very successful next year as the coun- selor. Good Luck Coach Harman ! wishes . ARCHIE CLANTON began his new job as Administrative Assistant this year He has proposed many new motivational and attitude building courses to help stu dents learn to care more about not only school, but also themselves and their futures. We feel that Mr. Clanton is a much needed addition to the adminrstra A. E. SMITH has been High School Principal for sixteen years Many students prayers have finally come true , though, as this is his last year For the first time this is not just a rumor. The high school is losing someone who seems to have always been here, always supporting the school, and always caring when a stu dent has given him half a chance to do so. His duties were various and many as the coordinator of all the secondary programs and activities registration and schedules. Elmo has done a fine job, and we wish hrm luck in Elementary A. W. AKINS, Elementary Principal, is retiring after thirty six years of educa tion, of which twenty four were spent at Roosevelt He was the coordinator of the Elementary program and of the registration, and scheduling of the pupils in Ele rnentary. If anyone entered the central office they could be sure to find Mrs. Walling there with an ever friendly smile. MARY MILLER was the Lunchroom Clerk. She reviewed lunch applications col lected lunch fees, and coordinated the entire lunch program Mrs Miller IS a F, ,Q gy ll JANIE WESTBROOK assisted the superintendent in preparing the budget as the Business Manager. Other new happenings concerning teachers this year include a State Evalua- tion Program, teachers getting out at the same time students do, a new lounge in the high school, and the teachers now have their conference period in the morning before school instead of after school. She was a member of the 1975 State Champ 440 Relay Team, and a state qualifier in the 440 and 880 runs in 1976 . Barbara also enjoys horse-back riding and swimming. 4 MOST FRIENDLY: As you walk down the halls of Roosevelt. you see many familiar faces. but one which is sure to be ready with a kind and friendly smile is the face of Abel Gaona. Perhaps Abel is so friendly because he enjoys people and believes that having friends is the most impor- tant thing in life. Abel is admired by his many friends in track, football, and all of his classes. After finishing school he wants to become a mechanic. Greg was class president his soph- omore and senior years and was active in sports and U.I.l... Wherever you find Greg, he is always a perfect gentle- man. Ray Ward The seniors faced SIX changes when they entered the halls of Roosevelt this year. Although the senior class was rather large at the beginning of the year, a decrease in the class has now made the class much smaller than last year's senior class. The class also made several decisions in their class meetings which changed the usual routine. They chose to take the senior trip alone this year instead of a Ir.! Sr. trip. The class also decided to have graduation off-campus. In the section itself Mr. and Miss RHS received a full page spread and new titles were added to the Who's Who section. A baby tree was also added to brighten the section a little more. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS are: Greg Byers Con the groundl President: LEFT TO RIGHT: Cassie Adams. Vice-President: Connie Jordan. Most people associate the Sophomore class with troublemaking. At this age these young people get drivers' licenses, dating privileges, and possi- bly even cars. Although it is the time for young teenagers to untie the apron strings, they are still worthwhile people who will mature gradually and become great men and women of tomorrow. In this class of wild, crazy, but tender sophomores, there has been much activity. There were no changes in this class, but each individual has gone through many emotional and psychological changes throughout the year. SOPHOMORE SPONSORS: Joe D. Armstrong J. T. This does not prove that there was any lack of courage or ability in the Eagle team however, for three players made the All District first team. These men were Richard Adams Coffensive endj, Kent McLeod Qoffensive guardl, and Ray Ward Cdefensive halfbackl. Honorable Mentions went to Eddy Cox Cdefensive and offensive tacklej, Scott Mann Cdefensive linebackerj, Richard Adams Cdefensive endj, Darren Royal Cquarterbackj, Dar- ron Mann Coffensive fullbackj, and Ray Ward Coffensive tailbackj, who also tied for the second top scorer in the district with nine touchdowns. Throwing the bomb is no ordinary football joke for these Junior Varsity gridsters, for they literally bombed the rival team in five of their eight wins for the season: three of which were total shutouts. The team also pulled the upset of the year by beating the Lubbock High sophomores for the first time in JV football history at RHS. The score was 14-6. Their only loss of the season came as a 32-13 defeat from Slaton with whom they shared the Dist. 5AA cham- pionship. The freshmen, undefeated champs since their seventh grade year, claimed a tie with Post for the District crown. The teams 30-O win over Slaton has been sited as their best team effort of the year. Eighth Grade Gridsrnen Improved describes this team, as they showed their true colors this year and finished second in district behind Slaton. The teams record consisted of five wins and only two losses. The team was without the services of one of their first string fullbacks, Todd Faulkner, for most of the season, as Todd broke his leg during their first district game against Frenship. Coach Jimmy Taylor has been Fresh- man girls basketball coach and l.V. girls basketball coach during the two years he has been at Roosevelt. This year's team averaging 51 points per game, racked up a 19-10 season record. With only one returning starter, they were runner up behind Slaton to the District 5AA crown with a 5-5 district record. The team competed in three tournaments this season. The Eagles captured 2nd place in the Roosevelt Tour- nament and won the championship at the Idalou Tournament. Although the team did not place in the West Texas Invitational Tournament at Slaton, Barbara Rose, 5'10W' senior guard, was selected as an All-Tourna- ment player . Debbie Parker, scoring 639 points, was named as a 1st team All-District forward. Honorable Mentions went to Patti Park, with 380 points, Cindy Thompson, who netted 271 points, and Barbara Rose. One of these is team teaching which is used in drug education, art, health, and music. Cursive writing and physical education, which are taught by the individual teacher, have also been added to the curriculum. A new series of math books provided unit tests and student activity sheets to be done with the parents. This accounted for the third and final change. Eddie Adkins John D.
