Individuality is the salt of common life. You may have to live in a crowd, but you do not have to live like it, nor sub- sist on its food. You may have your own orchard. You may drink at a hidden spring. Be yourself if you would serve others. Henry Van Dyke Roosevelt did not function as one this year, but instead, its goals and achievements were obtained by 1,600 different individuals. Each student contributed to Roosevelt in his or her own way. Some served through their academic achievements, and others participated in music, drama, and athletic events. Girl ' s Club, Boy ' s Club, and the student council provided numerous committees which were enthusiastically support- ed by the student body . Roosevelt would not have been complete without the attendance of those students who were not members of any school sponsored activities. Yet without their contributions in class and their appearances in the halls, Roosevelt would surely have been lost . Academically, Roosevelt met the needs of its changing student body by adding new courses to the curriculum and providing a variety of study programs. The student body obtained many privileges this year which no other Des Moines high school was able to duplicate. Open finals, home study, open campus, and a talking study hall for sophomores operated efficiently and successfully this year. The sterotype blue and white clad Rosie no longer exists. Instead, the great spirit of the Rough Rider has been chan- neled to new areas in order to meet the needs of its students.
