Equipped with sharpened pencils, shorthand and notehand wizards decoded secret script into recognizable language. Business law scholars tried persistently to make problems disappear from legal contracts and negotiable instruments. Bookkeepers opened a ledger to balance assets and liabilities, while typists prac- ticed dexterity of the hand and quickness of the eye. Practical arts students broke the ground by studying methods of construction and becoming acquainted with the use of var- ious tools. With knowledge of shop tech- niques as a foundation, they began to build competance and ability. From wood and raw materials resourceful hands formed creative objects. Mechani- cal and architectural drawing classes drafted plans for future occupations or just constructive hobbies. Predictions of the future indicated that with patience and cooperation, the potion for mastery of business and vocational skills could he discovered. The fundamentals of salesmanship are explained by Mr. Norman in one of Roosevelt ' s mobile classrooms. Homemaking Teaches Domestic Economics In a seeming paradox, the one pure!) feminine section of Roosevelt prepared tfirls for life in the masculine world. Courses such as family relations and interior decorating taught girls how to budgel time and monej while using their talents and energies for the happiness and harmony of their families. The foods classes offered mastery of cooking and nutrition, and clothing c lasses gave seam- stresses a chance to perfect the correct fundamentals as the) learned to make handsome garments. Commerical Classes Promote The opportunity to work with new styles in fashion while learning sewing funda- mentals is part of homemaking classes. With the aid of patience, paints, and posterboard, arta and crafts scholars it t - templed the mastery of their coarse and the development of their artistic ability. Speech and drama students exchanged stage fright for stage presence during the year ' s study. Beginning with elementary techniques of pantomine, drama students grasped an understanding of acting skills. Varied speech assignments found ora- tors tiding library references for debates and serious speeches, while a light touch was added as aspiring comedians pre- pared humorous speeches. Following the conductor ' s wand, mu- sicians varied the tone from classical to popular selections. The hand and orches- tras improved musical shills bj playing alegros and andantes, scemling the scale of acc omplishment, the choirs and ensembles sang in solo and in chorus. A morning practice of orchestra is directed by Mr. Bafgl« ' .
