Academics The mind is the birth of the soul and the soul the heart of a being. But the very life of a being is centered upon the de- velopment of th( mind. The key lies in questioning what we know, researching what we question, discovering what we have researched, and again questioning what we have discovered. Work shall not be the chains to impede progress; rather, work shall be the freedom to create and to build... a means to the end. which is only a beginning. 13

RHS of 2,300 As the business of the House of Repre- sentatives is conducted by its trusted speaker of the House, the Internal and Intra-school affairs of Rooeevelfl were handled bj our principal, Dr. Charles Rowley. Similar to the majority party leaden, Ml»« elma Cross and Mr. Don Blackman fulfilled specific duties. Coordinating all courses and activities, the administration sought to achieve har- mony among all departments. The many responsibilities of the advisors included scheduling the club programs, planning an arrangement for assemblies, and deal- ing with am disciplinary problems that arose. As well as supervising the more than 90 faculty members, Dr. Rowlej rep- resented Koosevelt in district business. s tin- scholastic fear unfolded, Roose- velt was more than many students gath- ered together lor an educational purpose. An element of experience and leadership existed in our midst for the purpose of guiding the student body through a year of aried endeavors and numerous ac- tivities. Mr. Blackman pause for a minute in his busy schedule to reflect on the quickest and best pos- sible way of getting the job done. Besides fulfilling their administrative duties, counseling, and handling discip- linary problems, Mrs. Velum Cross and Mr. Don Blackman actively sponsored Boys and (.iris Club aeti ities. In addi- tion to these varied responsibilities, Mrs. Iross co-ordinated the Senior Board and other senior elass activities Mr. Black- man administered college te t examina- tions, supervised the over all sports pro- gram, and was an integral part of all the school funrtionings. Prineipal Charles Rowley lends an attentive ear as biology teaeher Jaek koeh explains plans for the year in the science department. During his first year as principal, Dr. Charles Rowley became an integral part of the inner-work- ings of a complex organization, Roosevelt. Under his direction, the students and faculty worked to- gether to earn out our traditions with a co-opera- tive spirit. Nans for improved educational opportunities by obtaining more materials and teaching equip- ment were constructed for the future. Additional biology and chemistry teachers, two art teachers, and a new typing room were part of this goal. The expansion of the counseling sys- tem and the adjustment of teachers ' schedules to enable them to teach at a higher level were among Dr. Rowley ' s future plans. Mrs. Cross takes advantage of a few minutes of peaee and quiet before the day ' s aetivities begin. 15
