A Time of Joy A Time of Stress The bouncing babble and shuffle bustle of students transformed into flappers is a carefree face of celebration — the enjoyment of a spree of a moment ' s madness. Fancy booths and raji Ked ragtime, bubbly coke and amiable bartenders catch the mood for a frenzy of fun, a snatch of laughter just for joy. Strange symbols of simmering potions, an open book in a study hall, and scribbled notes on a withered page tell the stor ' of a process of learning. It worries and teases, encourages and dismays; the stretch of thought that probes just a bit deeper, searching for that glimmering gram of understanding that means knowledge. This Is Roosevelt . . . The shuffling has died away; lockers have stopped their slamming and sudden tranquility comes with the closing classroom doors. The wide halls are strangely hushed. A distant tap-tap of someone ' s heel, the plop of a book carelessly dropped accents this air of suspended motion. One moment my heart was stiff, my mind dwelled quietly within itself as I walked alone in the crowd. Then I became a fraction of that heartbeat, a wisp of that giant breath, and my tiny voice blended into the fury of hope. The Shuffling Has Died Away . . . That one living spirit tugged and pushed upward with its strength to the crest of victory. But the agony of defeat would have been my agony too; and the pride then, a victory in itself. 5

One Body 2,000 students within these walls, 2,000 individuals different from each other in 2,000 ways. But each of them is a part of one body called Roosevelt. This body is burgundy and blue and w hite. It walks in red socks and patterned hose, likes V-neck sweaters and button-down shirts. This body has a spirit that fills a classroom, an assembly, a gym, and has different names. It ' s pensive and thunderous, and is called Roosevelt. One Talent . . . One Hope . . . A jar of paint and a brush become an artist ' s typewriter. Color becomes a thought, a stroke an emotion, and the final pattern a stor A hollow piece of brass becomes a musician ' s paintbrush. A toot is a thought, each tempo, emotion, and the last few bars a finale. Words on a page become an actor ' s score. Each movement a thought, an inflection, emotion, and the final bow a climax. What will I be? Where will I go? What will I do? If only this test tube doesn ' t blow up. I ' d have hopes then, of becoming famous, of going far away, of doing great things. A test tube ' s a start . . . Scrawled notes and observations, perplexity and realization, are all a part of hope. 4
