Majorettes test thei football game. tire batons an d the Riderettes cross their fingers as they get ready for the halftime show at the East-Roosevelt The year begins . . September led anticipating and sun-tanned faces to the waiting doors of Roosevelt, and the doors soon closed behind summer and ushered in a frenzy of welcomes and ac- tivities. As sunny days grew fewer in num- ber, friendly smiles, words, and gestures replaced the warmth and lighted the halls and classrooms. Juniors and seniors immediately adapted to their role by setting an example of tradi- tional Roosevelt spirit and victory for the new sophomores, who quickly caught on. Unified support was behind every school and individual endeavor. Teams glanced briefly at the enthusiastic crowd, and the crowd looked with respect and warmth upon the teams; the students noticed the friendly faces in the halls, the teachers looked at their class- Heidi Hermann, Joanie Sandler, and jolly Jean Hale pony around the gym at an after-game open house. Meanwhile, in the cafeteria, a few senior boys wonder if the referee needed glasses.

Leave my half of your blanket alone! complains Becky Willis to her fellow Riderettes. rooms filled with anxious faces — and each one knew that he had no choice but to do his best, for this is what is expected at Roosevelt. Dim and colored lights, laughing and jok- ing voices, dancing and lingering feet, all jammed into the girls ' gym so that it could barely be recognized by its class-time occu- pants. The cafeteria echoed popular songs from a juke-box as students munched dough- nuts and drank pop. Open-houses and hoot- enannies achieved their purpose of breaking students away from their study routines. Those brief moments of fun felt at open- houses are something never to be forgotten. i4 Game-weary students pack the girls ' gym to listen to the Shilo Three at Roosevelt ' s first Hootenanny. 5
