World history is the requirement for sopho- mores, American history for juniors, and American problems and economics are required for seniors. The purpose of these courses is to bring the student to a better understanding of existing international, national, and local problems. This is achieved by a thorough study of history in the sophomore and junior years, and then a study of present day situations, as they are affected by history, in the senior year. Greater use of supplementary material introduces the student to a variety of thought and interpretation by well-known authorities in the field of historv, outside that of the textbook. Science Roosevelt ' s science department has been greatly im- proved with the addition of two new physics and two new chemistry rooms within the past two years, and students are fortunate to have the opportunity to work in the modern, well-equipped laboratories. Although only one year of science is required for graduation, the three lab sciences — biology, physics, and chemistry — are made available to all students. As a result of much effort on the part of the student, with aid from the science teacher, many entered the Hawkeye Science Fair and earned recognition for themselves, and for Roosevelt. In the spring William -Houser received the Iowa Teacher of the Year award. Roosevelt is proud to have him as a member of its outstanding faculty.
