Vice-Principal This year Bruce D. Gardner completes his third year of service at Roosevelt. He has worked diligently in supporting all Roosevelt athletic events and is always right there urging the teams on. Mr. Gardner helps carry out the policies of the school as second in command. Boys Club sponsorship, college test administra- tion, much of the Pancake Breakfast organization, and the counseling service are all part of his duties. Much of his time is also spent in helping boys solve their personal and disciplinary prob- lems. Bruce D. Gardner Mrs. Velma Cross Girls ' Adviser In her first year at Roosevelt, Mrs. Velma Cross has established a reputation for friendliness, fairness and interest in all Roosevelt activities. Mrs. Cross is kept very busy as adviser for Roosevelt ' s girls. In this position, she is sponsor of Girls Club, and directs senior class ac- tivities. It is also the responsibility of Mrs. Cross to coordinate the visits of col- lege representatives, and furnish scholar- ship information. Mrs. Cross has gained many friends among faculty and students at Roosevelt. 17

Delmer H. Battrick Principal Under the guidance of its principal, Delmer H. Battrick. Roosevelt continues to gain in prestige as one of America ' s outstanding high schools. Mr. Battrick has the responsi- bility of coordinating all of the many activities that have contributed to Roosevelt s suc- cess in manv fields. This is Mr. Battrick ' s tenth year at Rooseve t, where he i has worked unceasingly to raise the standard in the academic, social, cultural, and athletic activities which produce the well-rounded student. Roosevelt students and faculty members are especially proud of the special recognition ifiven to D. H. Battrick by Croft Educational Services of New London Connecticut. Mr. Battrick was one of five principals in the nation to reach the finals in the competition for Secondary Principal of the Year, and was one of three to win a special citation. Lelmer H. Battrick is most deserving of this honor, and Roosevelt is certainly fortunate to have such a competent director.

Under the careful supervision of Dr. John H. Harris, the Des Moines School System is growing a t a tremendous rate. Included within the Des Moines district are over forty thousand students, whose learning experiences are adjusted and ad- ministered by the many officials associ- ated with the superintendent ' s office. There are now over two thousand admin- istrators, teachers, and service personnel under the direction of Dr. Harris. In total numbers of persons involved, build- ings, and expenditures, the school system is Des Moines ' most important business. In terms of the final product, its value can be measured only by the contribu- tions made by the graduates to their com- munity. Dr. John H.
