Helping and leading . . . Roosevelt has always shown a wide interest in all aspects of community life. As a part of the international community, not only do many Roose- velt students get to visit and study abroad, but they contribute to spon- sor exchange students from other countries through both the American Field Service and Youth for Under- standing programs. The sense of unity and brotherhood these students spread throughout the school, and Des Moines itself, is worth far more than many realize. Through the Interna- tional Club and the language clubs, interested students learn much about the people and culture of foreign lands. Roosevelt boys help the community through the Kiwanis Key Club by participating in many Kiwanis serv- ices and other worthwhile efforts, and people in Des Moines and all over the United States are informed of Roose- An excellent knowledge of geography is of high importance for the modern-day citizen. Getting to know the world better are Becky Bjork and Jim Franquemont. A joyful holiday Christmas binds hearts together, and dur- ing the yuletide season Roosevelt ' s close-knit family is thus brought together even more. Keith Carlson and Oakley Ethington, mem- bers of the faculty, formed an unquestion- able unity between all students as they sang solos, to resounding and sincere applause, at this year ' s Christmas assembly. The crowded auditorium was faintly lighted by the candles of the Concert Chorus, and the voices of the student body combined to create a warmth of security and good will. School halls appeared reverent and friendly as they displayed the holiday ' s decorations and advertised messages of exciting activi- ties. Parties, hay rides, Christmas cards, tobogganing, and dances added their own special type of merriment to the joyous sea- son. Festive Christmas dances — Heavenly Holiday , Crimson Caprice , and Silver Mist — were presented privately by three groups of senior girls. The season frolicked finally to an end, but memories will linger in hearts and minds for years to come. Gone are ice and snow and slippery sidewalks, heavy coats and warm scarves and stocking caps, chilly hands and red cheeks and nippy noses, hot chocolate and singing voices and welcomed fires — until next year. Ho! Ho! Ho! Loolc what I have here! exclaims good old Santa Claus, who bears no resemblance whatsoever to Greg Narber.

clt activities through The Roundup, the school newspaper. The athletic and scholastic achieve- ments of Roosevelt High School, and its intense awareness of community responsibility, are recognized throughout the state. Each year Roosevelt takes part in the All-State Student Council by sending at least two representatives, and a Roosevelt student often holds an office in this organization. In the All-City Student Council, the birthplace of future leaders of the community, young people learn how to work with others and solve com- mon problems. Through council meet- ings, both state and city, Roosevelt keeps in touch with, and shows inter- est in, other schools. Thus, as a body, students work for the betterment of relations between themselves and the Des Moines community. John Strief, Russ Allen, Kai Hildebrandt, Chuck Strief, and other members of the Roosevelt Ki- wanis Key Club work on one of their many projects to help the community — in this case the Roosevelt community — by cleaning out the trophy cases. In her traditional Japanese kimono, Akiko Saito, from Tokyo, stands beside a thousand cranes which, according to an old Japanese belief, can cure the sick.
