Balloons are ready to fly as soon as the Homecoming Queen an J Scr courr ere introduced. The splendor and excitement of Homecoming usually seem to end so soon, but this year the weatherman thoughtfully and unexpectedly offered two homecoming games. In the falling rain, drenched but hopeful Roosevelt followers awaited the kickoff. Even the foresighted fans equipped with umbrellas and rainwear were unable to escape the torrential downpour, but, with pride, most fans remained in their coveted seats until the announcement came that the game had been rescheduled. The mounting enthusiasm made students all the more determined to have a victory. On a clear evening the following Saturday that goal was happily accomplished. Stu- dents then hurried home to change and depart for the dance, a dramatic ending to a memorable Homecoming, 1963. Her Majesty Carol McCollum is escorted to the throne by Jeff Newland at the Homecoming dance.

Disappointed Homecoming spectators slosh their way back to their car after salvaging balloons from the flooded football field. With a memorable Homecoming . . . Students and alumni alike displayed traditional colorful spirit as they greeted the first big festivity of the year— Homecoming. Many captivating events led up to the big night and maintained a perpetual flow of excitement even following the dance. Girls, clad in blue and white, proudly sported large white mums with navy-blue R s on them on the day of the long awaited game. The Homecoming Queen and her court were announced during a pep assembly, relieving the anticipation and suspense that had been felt for weeks. A trip around the world . . . The lights were low, and everyone sat in hushed anticipation. Then the street lights flickered on, and all of a sudden the audience was transported to Paris after dark. The girls took off their berets, hung them on the lightposts, and jumped into the Seine to per- form another beautiful and art ist k swimming routine. These were the Sharks, this was the Sharks Pageant, and through the theme Travel Treasures they visited India, Mex- ico, Hawaii, and many other exotic lands. With attractive costumes, colorful light tech- niques, and well-synchronized acts, the Shark Club ' s annual piece de resistance provided three entertaining evenings, and certainly no one regretted having gone. There was grace- ful beauty, sidesplitting slapstick humor, and that wonderful sense of going somewhere without actually leaving. The 1963 version of the Sharks Pageant was certainly as good as, if not better than, the Sharks Club tra- dition. Faces radiate excitement and tension in the locker room before the opening night of the annual Sharks Pageant.
