★ ★★★ ★★★★★ THE ROUNDUP Jokes Taken From First Annual Yes, we found these in the first Roundup annual, published ten years ago. History repeats itself, — Hu- man nature does not change, or any other way you may wish to say it. One of Miss Ogden ' s classes was talk- ing about the western states and the troubles they have to contend with, when Howard Lyon sprang a new word on the group: They have poli gamy in Utah. Mr. Eastman: Does air in the ice box circulate in counterclockwise or clock- wise movement? Ted Savage: Yes, it does. Mr. Koch (after explaining about blood): Who says blood isn ' t living tissue? Eairburn Kurtz: That supply teacher. Mr. Carrot hers: What is one reason for a high tariff? Roy: It gives the Republicans a platform to stand on. Mr. Barnes: What is the most ex- pensive clay used for commercial pur- poses? Claire St Owe 11: Boncilla. Mr. Koch: What is the singular of bronchi? Ted Hall: Bronchitis. Mr. Carrothers: It seems to me that the people who are always talking are the ones who think that I give such ridiculous examination questions. Mr. Carrothers (handing out program cards): Write on your subjects for next semester. Habitual Hunker: How do you make ditto marks? Mr. Eastman : This glass has not been near the sea, but it sound like a sea- shell. Sumner Brunk: It must be water- glass. ] Mr. Carrothers: Can a family live on $1500 a year? Roy Utter: Well, it ' s according to what kind of a wife he has. Miss Meers: What is the difference between farther and further? Bab Bacon: Farther is farther than further. Dudley Weible: I don ' t like this book. Miss Jacobs: Why not, Dudley? Dudley: The covers are too far apart. Mr. Eastman: Why, there is a fresh- man in the class that isn ' t as dumb as you are. C. W.: Well, wait until he has been here as long as I have. Miss Meers: Take the front seat. Louise. C: Where shall I take it? Miss Ogden: The whole class will re- main one hour after school. Voice from rear of the room: Give me liberty or give me death. Miss Ogden: Who said that? Voice: Patrick Henry. Layson Vorhees: How do those climb- ing monkeys work? Mr. Kastman: Climb a rope and see. Mr. Koch: We will now begin naming the lower animals, starting with Eair- buro Kurtz. Miss Balliet: Now are there any question a that you would like to ask before I leave the room? Eddie Sherwin: Yes. How long will you be gone ? Miss Jacobs (in English): Who ' s talking? Marie: It ' s me. Miss Jacobs: It is I. Marie: Well, then, what did you ask me for, if it was you? John Cownie: Well, no matter how fast a fish swims, it never perspires. Miss Sperry (in home room period): Bob, were you absent from science class yesterday ? Bob: Yes, ma ' am. Miss Sperry: He did not report you. Bob: Maybe he did not miss me. Miss Sperry: Maybe because it was so quiet. Hineteen Hundred and Thirty-three 21
