We gathered in our home room and found Mrs. May B. Purdue as our home room teacher. After a while, we got used to scampering around every time the bell rang and settled down to work. The exciting moment of select - ing our class officers came and after a lively campaign, Charles Gilliam was elected presidentg Kenneth Barker, vice presidentg Nell Rumple, secretaryg and Gayle Durham treasurer. Early in the spring we broke the monotonous routine of school and celebrated with a weiner roast which afforded us a wonderful time. Before we realized it, it was vacation time and fifty - twoofus received the good news that we could come back as sophomores. After three months of restful vacationing, we returned to take up our duties as sophomores. Miss Delsie Pack was our home room teacher. We paused long enough to elect Charles Gilliam once again as our presidentg Kenneth Bar - ker, vice presidentgGwyn Redding, secretaryg and Audene Church, treasurer. In early January we held our class party at the Y.M, C.A, in Elkin. The thirty - two present had a nice time. After a three months' vacation, thirty - three jolly juniors returned to school to find Mrs. Jean Kirby as our home room teacher. Once again we held aclass meeting and a new mem - ber. George Gambill, was elected president, Herbert Settle, vice presidentg Bertie Gentry, secretaryg and Jo Ann Mathis , treasurer. Shortly after, Bertie Gentry left us and Hope Langford became secretary. Nell Rumple and H, C. Roberts reigned as our Hal - loween Carnival King and Queen that year. On February 14, 1951, we gathered in our home room and selected the standard class ring. With the consent of our principal we took our choice of either the ring with a crest, or the ring without the crest, and about half selected the ring with the crest and half without. BIGGEST BABY MOST HANDSOME Katherine B. Keye David Luffman TEACHER'S PET PRETTIEST David Luffman Hope Langford We were host to the Senior class at the Junior - Senior Banquet held May l, 1951 on Tuesday night in the Y.M, C. A. in Elkin. This banquet was one of the nicest a Ronda high school class has ever given. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed Doctor Wayland's speech. Near the end of school we enjoyed a weiner roast at Smoot's Park in North Wilkesboro, Vacation time rolled around and then was quickly gone. Now we were to be Seniors. Vacation time being over, thirty - one eager seniors rushed to their home room to find Mrs. Evelyn Church as the home room teacher. As we began our journey as seniors we elected George Gambill, presidentg Warner Hoots, vice president: Louise Foster, secretary: and Kenneth Barker, treasurer. On October 16, the seniors held a class party at the Y.M.C. A, in Elkin. Everyone had a nice time. During October we began discussing our trip to Wash - ington and saving money for the trip. About twenty - five members of the class planned to go on this long - looked - forward to trip. Minnie Sue Prevette and Warner Hoots reigned as our Halloween Carnival King and Queen. In the early fallof our Senior year Nell Rumple mar - ried her King of the Halloween Carnival, H. C. Roberts . Then in a few weeks Minnie Sue, our long tall slim ace basketball player became the blushing bride of Jim Joyner, who never failed in escorting her to the basketball games. Wedding bells rang again when Katherine Burchette married her Air Force Sergeant, one Hassel Key fa former graduate of Rondaj in a beautifulwedding at Pleasant Grove Church. In the spring we gave the play Cou1d Be. It was very successful and we enjoyed the trials, tribulations and fun of giving it. On the night of May 31, 1952 we received our diplomas forwhich we had worked so hard our four years in high school. tguhealzhbes ' BEST SPORTS MOSI' ATHLETIC Lucy Barker George Gambill Herbert Settle Minnie Sue Joyner is MOST POPULAR Louise Foster Wamer Hoots Zlass Prophecy h Iliad no idea, when I stepped off the train in Grand Central Station on that beautiful summer day of 1962, that this would be one of my happiest days. Aslwas calling for my mall at the desk of the Waldorf - Astoria Hotel in New York, l heard a somewhat familiar volce. Looking qulckly ln the direction from which it came I saw my old classmate, Kenneth Barker, now replaclngthe great H.V. Kaltenborts, as a news caster on television. I was overjoyed to see Kenneth, and we sat in the lobby for almost two hours and talked of our high school days. Suddenly Kenneth said, Why don't we go to The Stork Club andspend the evening? I've a surprise for you. ' This I was delighted to do and shortly we had changed into appropriate clothes and hailed a taxi to 'The Stork Club. Upon our arrival at the club we were greeted by Bobby Pardue, new manager of the highly improved club. The surprise was a success because I was totally unprepared to find Bobby there. Bobby had the head walter direct us to a choice table, where we could get a clear view of the floor show, and serve us as his personal guests. Qderlng dinner proved fun, es - pecially when a familiar couple, Peggy Baity and David Luffman, joined us at our table. They are the co - owners of a newly established dancing school, which the gossip column gives an A rating. Peggy and David stayed at our table for the remainder of the evening reminiscing of the good old days. They convinced us that dancing is healthy, so we uied our luck . After a dance we returned to our table to find two couples had joined our group. Bobby Jean Anthony. one of Powers' most famous models. and looklnglikeapage out of Glamour , was escorted by Mr. Powers' nephew: and Bobby Gilliam, a professional soldier, who had made quite a name for himself in Uncle Sam's Army, escorted Jean Hemric who has entered pro - fessional photography. lean has become quite a shutter bug. Gossip columns were full of talk about the opening of a new Club. Hub's , owned and operated by our own little talented. Herbert Settle, who is doing his own comedy acts. We couldn't let the opportunity go by so after a few happy moments we all set out for Hub's . Herbert had in - vited all his old classmates of his class of 1952 to be present at this grand opening of his club. ' Barbara Dlmmette who owns the world's leading Doll Manufacturing Company was acting as Herbert's head waitress. We were surprised to find H.C. and Nell Rumple Roberts were returning to Ronda via New York after a buying spree in Chicago for the Blackwelder Fttrnlture Company already at Hub's enjoying themselves immensely, Nell was her usual life of the party self, and admiring glances followed her every move. Number one on the entertainment list was Gayle Durham who rendered s beautiful piano solo with the skill of a professional artist. Whenitappeared that all had arrived, an important announcement was made concernlnga basketball game to be played the next evening in nearby Madison Square Garden. This was of great interest to us. because one of ourclasamates. Minnie Sueloyner. leading woman scorer of the nation. and running only 4.3 points behind the leading male scorer, who ls of course our own handsome George Gambill. was playing with the Ruby Royals, Na - tional Champions, for the past five years. George, leading scorer of the nation for two years with a 1962 average of 28.9, has been playing for Brooklyn for five years. Much of the credit forthe five natlonalchampionahipa andtwn world championships is due him . We looked forward with excitement to the game the next day. Hope Langford, owner and manager ofa City Bus Transportation Com - Jo Ann Mathis Kenneth Barker MOST LIKELY T0 SUCCEED BEST DRESSED pany, volunteered the services of her buses, one of which took us to the game, We all heanlly enjoyed our ride in bus number 12, driven by Phlllp Collins who just couldn't give up No, 12. As we rode over I heard a familiar racket and as I expected, found Katherine Burchette Keye to be the source. She has been keeping books straight for the Home Chair Company and she was bubbling over because Hassel was on his way home from lapan. Sitting next to Kat was Warner Hoots, right hand man for J. Edgar Hoover, and one of the greatest FBI a - genu of our time. Since Kat had just come from Ronda, Icalled to her asking what Lucy Barker was doing. Why don't you find out for yourself? To my utter astonishment, I turned and saw Lucy. She told me that she was teaching English at Char - lotne Central and coaching a winning basketball team. that had been state champs for two years. Pride radiated from her face as she spoke of them . Lucy Stroude. a fashion buyer for the Style Rite Shop in Dallas, Texas , was sitting next to Lucy. She told me that lo Ann Mathis was now the pri - vate secretary of Gordon McLind6n, President of the L. B.S. in Dallas. Arriving at the Garden was a new experience for most of us, but our interest was ln the game which got underway soon thereafter. What a game I An exciting experience like it comes once in a lifetime. A familiar face up near the Royal Bench attractedmy attention. I blinked my eyes. No, it couldn't bel Gwyn kddlng, of all people, coaching a women's basket ball team. 1 never before knew Gwyn had that much interest in the game . A young newspaper woman passed going toward Gwyn. They began to shake hands furiously. Gwyn see med very pleased to give anetrclusi ve inter - view to Eria Shore, now a star reporter for the New York Times. Eria drifted around to us ln a few minutes and told me that she had just seen another old friend. Audene Church. Audene is secretary to the Vice Pres - ident of the United States, and making quite a name for herself ln the Washington columns. Kenneth had disappeared, but sitting where he had been was another rweetlysmlllng old friend, Ruth West. Her loyalty as a church worker and constant server of the needy is well known in church circles. She was home on leave from her mission in Central Africa. Ruth told me that she had recently seen Mary Elizabeth Foster and Jimmy Calloway in California. Their great new movie, Everything So - So is destined to be a great hit. Watch for itl lt's marvelous. Another missing from our happy reunion was Louise Foster, now an air hostess. At this moment she arrived, emitting rays of enjoyment at every mention of flying. Her plans were to leave New York for Miami on the 7:40 plane the next moming. Qtr quiet friendly boy, lake Weems, is now a very friendly policeman serving in Newark, New lersey. Being a typical policeman he is loved by everybody there, especially the 'street urchins whom he fumished with bubble gum. Kenneth told me earlier that Clyde Adams had achieved his goal of becoming Wilkes County Farm Agent. Hub's was buzzing when we returned after the game, but we saw a lone girl occupying one of the tables. Looking more closely we recognlud Mary Gay Redding, a fashion designer from North Carolina. Such an enjoyable evening! As we all made preparations to leave, we experienced that nostalgic feeling which accompanies reminiscing and re - uniorts. I retumed to my hotel suite and, pushing aside the past, im - medlately began rehearsing for my television show with Vaughn Monroe.
