They were proud and happy-they were in high sehonl! We of the Senior Class find it hard to believe that that was four years ago. VVhere have the years gone? 'l'hey have tlown by, but they have been filled with many happy experiences, a few teartaeiu-r., and some, well, quite a bit ef studying and burning of midnight oil. l?ut to get back to 19117. After the entire student body had assembled in the gymnasium for Mr. Poplin's wel- coming speech. we filed hack to our e assroozn, very stift and without speaking, where we kept our mouths closed and our eyes on our new home roozn teacher, Mrs. May Ii. Purdue. ln u short time we had a very lively election campaign and elected Lloyd Graham president of our classg Rich- ard Martin, vice pri-:aidentq Ifileanor Petree, secretary, and Hope Tharpe, treasurer. - Un May N, 19141-T, our class had its annual picnic at Cumberland Knoh Park. After a delicious lunch, the group hiked around t'l.e mountain trail there, a trail that seemed too short at the beginning but too long in the end. After a short vacation in tlte summer of '48, 25 of us returned as sophomores. At our first meeting in our home room in the Home Economies building, we met our home room teacher, Mrs. Marie W. Blevins, who was new here. Early in the fall another lively and elose election was lzeld. This time the laurels went to Edward Greene as president of our elassg l.oui:ae Wishon, vice-president, Eleanor Petree, secretary, and L. P. Holloway, treasurer. ln April ot' '19, eight ol' us girls, Dorothy Osborne, Louise NVishon, Hope Tharpe, Imogene VVoodrulT, Pauline Houck, Bernice Hayes, Doris Purdue, and linnna Jean Couch had the pleasure of serving as waitresses at the Junior-Senior lianquet. which was given at the Carolina Restaurant in North Vtlilkeshoro, North Carolina. ln the fall of '49, 23 of the original 'LIS returned. We were delighted to learn that Mrs. Marie VV. Blevins was our home room teacher again, and our home room was again in the Home Economics building, 'l'his year our class ollieers were Bobby Durham, president, ltichard Martin, vice-president, Dorothy Osborne, seeretaryg and lidward Greene, treasurer. Later in the year, liuci Durham was 4-'eeted best all-round student of the Junior Class. He was honored at a luncheon given by the Kiwanis Club or North Wilkeshoro for all those selected throughout Wilkes County. ln the early spring ot' '50, we very successfully presented the play, Aunt Hetty Hits Her Stride. A few weeks later, one ti e evening of April 28, the girls came hlooxning out in their evening dresses and the boys in their best suits to 1ll.lIt'l11l the Junior-Senior Banquet in the VVilkes Hotel, where wc entertained the Seniors and the high school faculty. The theme ot' Ireland and Saint Patrick's Day was used. Our guest speaker, Dr. J. S. Hiatt, gave an interesting laik and music was presented hy Mrs. Helen Hendren, pianist. Edward Greene serveil as Master ot' Ceremonies. ln our sophomore and junior years Dorothy Osborne represented our school in the Soil Conservation speaking contest, and won second place in the County Contest each time. She represented Ronda again in our :senior year. lu the fall of '50, twenty ot' us began our final year in high school. 'l'his year we had a new home room teach- er, Mrs. Ruth Page. A few weeks after the opening of school we elected our class otlicers and this time Imogene Woodrufi' was elected president: Hope Tharpe, vice-presidcntg Dorothy Osborne, secretary, and Edward Greene, treasurer. .lust before Christmas, Imogene Woodrufi' got married and quit school. Hope Tharpe, our vice-presi- dent, then became president, and Betty .lo Cooke was elected vice-president in her stead. ln the spring of '51, we presented a lively, old fashioned play, Deacon Duhbs. At last, the day for which we had waited so long- graduation. Our Baccalaureate Sermon was preached in the liondu Baptist Church, on Sunday, May 27, 1951. Our high school careers finally came to an end Tuesday, May 29, 1951, with our graduation in the ltonda Gymnasium. In the spring of 1960 I, wlth great difficulty, got in touch with all my classmates of the Class of '51 and lnvlted them E0 be guests on my television show, called Do You Remember? , or Have You Forgotten? , sponsored by the Dainty Soap ompany. 'I'he first to appear on the show was Edward Greene. now one of the top salesmen in the country. He was selling men's wear and was on hls way to Paris for a three months vacation. Next to appear was Dlckle Martin. He was an artist, drawing new plans and body styles for the Buick Automobile Company. He was doing very well. in fact, so well that his father had retired and had come to live with Dickie and his family ln Detroit. Michigan. The next guest on our show was Betty Anthony. She had become the owner of three department stores but stated that she still dropped by to see Mr. McDaniel on Saturdays to pep up the business in his shoe department. Next to appear on the show was our old scorekeeper, none other than Doris Pardue. She was still single fnot that she hadn't trledi, and doing well. teaching English in Washington, D. C. This show was really interesting, and became more lively as lt progressed. Next on the stage was Jo Ann Johnsen to tell of her past slnce our high school days. She had at last gotten her man and was living happily ln Charlotte, North Carolina. as a housewife and the mother of three llttle codgers. I was enjoying the show so much I hardly realized another guest was standing beside me. As I turned I saw it was Eleanor Petree. Eleanor now had a good position as secretary fer the F.B.I. in Chicago. She had the same smile but was a bit gray in the temples. I stretched my neck as I saw a man wearing a broad brlmmed Stetson hat coming toward me. It was C. A. Burchette, now owner of an 800-acre rance ln Texas with several hundred head of cattle. We talked a while, and, as he turned to go to his seat I saw a familiar red and white package in his hip pocket, which read, Beech-Nut Chewing Tobacco. As I saw Louise Cockerham approaching me. wearing a mink coak and enough jewelry to start a store, I thought, How well my classmates have done for themselves. We found she was the sole owner of a business called How to Reduce. Of course she ha:ln't tried the remecly herself, but she admitted the best wa-y to reduce ls to stop eating. My eyes next beheld a travel-worn Hope Tharpe. She was naw married to her old high school boyfriend, who was now a stock car racer. She traveled with htm from city to city, and she stated that they spent most of their Winters in Florida. I though, What n Life! as a sharp pain ran from my corn. Next, coming from out of the wlng I saw a large sweater with All-American written on the front. I could hardly see the glrl wearing lt, but as she moved closer I could tell lt was Betty 4CookieJ Cooke. She had joined the All-American Red Heads and was making a career of lt. Who's this? General Elsenhour? No, just Susie Durham. After her boyfriend. Herman, decided to make his career ln the Army, Susie Joined the WAC's. She said she was enjoying lt very much and urged more of us to enlist. Next on the lllt of guests was Emma Jean Couch. She was the owner of a mirror company ln Tampa, Florida. She said ?l'l0Pl'f8,C: built a crazy house there for unwanted and unwelcome guests and invited me to visit her the next time I was n 4 or da. , The commercial began and, as the announcer was praising our wonderful product, I dropped outside for a drlnk of water. As I walked back ln I heard a queer noise, and I knew in a moment it was Roy Gray with that giggle of his. He was laughing at Fdlth Roberts' new hat. Roy said he was llvlng in Wilkcs County and had one of the best tobacco crops anywhere ln the country. I-Ie also had a jet-like tractor and said that at last he had something he could drive. 1 iEd1tl'i smiled as she told about her beauty shop in New Jersey. She said business was picking up now that long halr s n sty e again. I heard someone whistling a merry tune and I turned and saw Bernice Hayes-the same sweet Bernice. She said that gow she was singing with three other girls in a show of their own over W.B.T. sponsored by the Kills 'Em All Rat Bait ompany. I turned the volume a little higher as Pauline Houck began to tell her story of how she had been married twice and was now entitled How to Get Your Man and Keep Him, or Better Luck Next Time. The last to appear on our show was Dorothy Osborne. She told us that she had finished college and had become one of the most outstanding lady lawyers ln the country. She had made qultc a name for herself. Was still climbing, and was hoping to become a judge. I glanced at the clock and saw that our time was up. So we said good-byes. the sponsor gave a cheery word about Dainty Soap, and the curtain fell as Roy Gray let loose another of his famous giggles. After I returned to my apartment, I thought of my classmates and the fun we had ln school. I remembered the exams, quarrels. parties, ball games, and fun. It was pleasing to know that each of my classmates had taken advantage of his education and had done well for himself. With these pleasant thoughts I leaned back in my chair and closed my eyes as I though of what fun we had when you and I were students in Ronda High. .
