•h 7ormvd To capture and preserve those treasured high school days of 1966-67, to guide you throuqh the many phases of hiqh school life at Roncalli, and to present to you a book of memories, so that you may relive vour hiqh school days at Poncalli through the contents of this Lance; these are the aims and desires with which we have endeavored to make this an unforgettable annual. 4 The Lance Staff CONTENTS H1 STORY ADMINISTRATION CLASSES ACTIVITIES ORGANIZATIONS SPORTS LANCE STAFF Editor-in-Chief. Conway Pastor of Sacred Heart Dedication Vivy Itwcvinl Tints M Tdvu Roncalli High School is fortunate to have you, a truly devoted educator, as its leader. For the past three years, our school has grown and nros- pered under your guidance and inspiration. You have dedicated yourself to providing the best possible education for the students of Roncalli High School. Each individual has benefited from your foresight and enlightened leadership. So, with great pride and heartfelt thanks, we dedicate our first Annual, The Lance of 1967, to you. 7 ui 7 haveptovnxALs h keep ayui miles to yo Great projects are guided by the responsibility of fulfilling definite goals and promises. Such is the case of Roncalli High School. The proper and immediate end of Christian education is to cooper- ate with divine grace in forming a true and perfect Christian, that is, to form Christ in His children. For precisely this reason, Christian education takes in the whole aggregate of human life ----- physical and spiritual, intellectual and moral, domestic and social ----- so that every aspect of life might be directed by Christian thought, judgment, and action, regulated and perfected in accordance with the example and teaching of Christ. As a Catholic institution for learninq, Roncalli was thus formu- lated to provide a balanced educational program in which both religious and secular branches of knowledge are presented simultaneously. In this manner, students learn how to live as good citizens of two worlds, in the light of one, understanding the other more fully. In spite of the inconvenience, students and faculty were grateful that the school could begin operation in 1964. Classroom area consisted of merely one wing, with Mass being offered in the corridor. Proqress proceeded rapidly, however, and activities were soon branching into other areas of the school as one by one, departments were completed. Labs were equipped with materials, the kitchen beqan to look like one, the gym was ready to go, and the whole school in qeneral beqan to have the appearance of a place of higher learning. Mass was also relocated to its present place of worship as the chapel was finished. Combina- tion locks were installed on all lockers, and the students soon heard the clear tone of the class changing bell over the technical P.A. system that was instaI led. 10 Before its name was offically approved by Bishop Lambert A. Hoch, the school was known to all as Central Catholic. Roncalli is the family name of the late Pope John XXIII, who captured the imagination of the entire world during his brief reign. The students of Roncalli requested his name as one for consideration, and in his letter of approval, Bishoo Hoch wrote, It is singularly significant that the generation of Catholic youth in Aberdeen was so keenly aware of his greatness that they chose his name to be the name of their high school. Faculty and students welcomed over 5,000 visitors to their school when Open House was held. Proud and privi leqed students quided people on well- organized tours, and were on hand to answer questions and direct in the event of anyone losing his way. RoncalIi s Iibrary is boasting many new books. Recently the reference magazines were processed and shelved for the stu- dents use. Teenaqers have a choice between two philosophies of life — beinq that of meeting challenges head on and carrying them out, the other that of shunning responsibility. It is evident that in the past three years students at Roncalli have accepted their challenges and, together with the faculty, have developed both the reliqious and secular branches of thei r education. The most important asset of any Catholic school is the presence of God sharinq His divine life with the students. They have an opportunity for this at daily Mass. Students also receive instruction in the faith on a regular basis throughout the week. Roncalli boys and girls learn in separate classes whenever this is practical. Students are further grouped according to their special needs and abilities, so that they can develope at the proper rate. A wide range of subjects is available to all students. With the help of parents and school counselors, students plan and choose courses, directing them toward their future in college or work in the business world. Students are making strides in the literary field of their education. The began by publishing a newspaper, The Crusader, dedicated to the ad- vancement of the school. The students now publish a newspaper entitled The Cavalcade and a literary magazine called The Scribe. I I The past three years have witnessed notable progress in the music department. Our chorus has made several appearances both on television and at the school. The band has also presented a number of concerts besides cheerinq the team at sports events. Keynotes, a special qroun of choristers, have been seen representing the school on several ocas- sions. The highlight of the music department was Roncalli's representa- tion at All State Chorus for the past two years. The formation of clubs has contributed much to the after-school activities this year. Enthusiastic students are becominq active members of Home Ec, Library, Scribe, or Letterman's Club, and the Drill Team. Competition for the first time under the SDHSAA now finds the school the holder of a number of awards in speech and dramatics. Student homemakers gain experience in the Home Ec. laboratory equipped with the most modern appIi ances. Many events at the school are becominq annual affairs. Althouqh it was held for the first time this year. Homecoming is one such event. Some of its special features are a color day, the naming of our Lord and Lady and their coronation, the biq football game, all followed by the dance. One particular basketball qame which seems to cause added interest in fans each season is the Faculty-Varsity game. A traveling trophy is presented to the winners each year. The annual Mardi Gras offers a new theme each year with prizes going to students wearing costumes most original and funniest. A Student Council has been started, which will carry on, direct, and oftentimes be the driving force behind these co-curricuIar activities. Roncalli’s sports world has developed into the major sports of football, basketball, wrestlinq, and track. In the initial stages of the school, students chose the colors green and qold to represent their school. After the better part of a year in deadlock, Cavaliers proved to be the most popular choice for the team name, the insignia beinq a Cavailer on a horse. Contributing to the team's success and the lively spirit of the students at games are the pre-game pep rallies and the cheerleaders. The girls are picked early each fall with the varsity squad of six members including four seniors and two juniors. Sophomores and freshmen have corresponding squads consisting of four members each. 12 Spring approaches, and with it, Graduation. While seniors are lookinq ahead to a different future, they are also looking back and re- viewing the many events of the past three years. Graduates cannot help but experience the feeling of an amateur art- ist who, equipped with the necessary provisions, has created a master- piece from within. Havinq been the first class in a new school, they helped shape and mold a spirit that will quide it in years to come. Special acknowledgement and thanks must also go to the many parents, pastors, teachers and donators, who have so willingly given of themselves their time, and talents to make Roncalli the success it has been thus far. The organization of Roncalli High School has been a long ranqe project in both planning and execution. Even now, after three years of operation, there is still an atmosphere of beginning with many promises to keep and miles to go before we sleep. 44 Roncalli High is our cry! screamed the intercom as students, fashioned in greens and golds, passed jubilantly for classes. Such was the scene on Friday, October 15, as the first Fall Festival activities commenced. Harry Jacobsen, Master of Ceremonies for the evening program, introduced guests of honor, Kathy Smith and Dick Schumaker, the 1966-67 Gypsy Queen and Marshall from Northern State College. Kathy and Dick were to crown the new Royalty, Roncalli's Lord and Lady. Lord candidates Randy Teiszen, Joel Frey, Doug Sauer, Bob Lehmann, and Jim Grabenbauer escorted Lady candidates Carol Burgard, Kathy Daschle, Barb Hawley, Mary Ann Weber, and Barb Andries to the stage. Cameras flashed from everywhere as the audience exploded with joyful shouts while the Queen and Marshall crowned Randy and Carol as Roncalli’s first Lord and Lady. Little Cindy VanCleave and Billy Roehr carried the Royalty's crowns. Junior class president, Tom Brown, helped with Randy's caDe while Louise Grote presented a bouguet of yellow roses to Lady Carol. Randy and Carol presided over the rest of the show, while The Songsters and a group of boys presented musical selections. A piano solo concluded the entertainment for the coronation program. Friday's coronation closed with a sock hop. Lord Randy and Lady Carol let the first dance and all candidates later joined in. Saturday's game between the Roncalli Cavaliers and the Lemmon Cowboys, kicked off with a touchdown by Jim Grabenbauer at Simmon's Field. At half time Lord Randy, Lady Carol, and all candidates were introduced to the audience from the center of the field. The mightly Cavaliers lassoed the Cowboys 45-7. The Chosen Few played for the Victory Dance following the game. Students were reluctant to see the festivities end. We are all looking forward to an elaborated festival next year, when the graduated seniors will return for their first homecoming. 45 46 47 ORATORY: Bob Lehmann POETRY: Kathy Grunendike HUMOROUS READING: Tim Mol seed DRAMATIC READING: Mary Siegel Vcdam 51 FLUTE: Judy Chauncey, Steve Davies. Losing their first game to an experienced Mil- bank, the Cavaliers showed many mistakes. The opener had no effect on the next four games as Roncalli went on to win against Britton, Selby, the Flandreau Indains and Mobridge. Roncalli was stopped short of their fifth straight by Lemmon by a score of 44-50. Next the Cavaliers played one of the State A contenders. Miller. Roncalli put up a good fight but lost 58-54 in an overtime. Roncalli's season started to qo up and down for the next few games winning from Lemmon, a sectional rival, losing to Notre Dame and winning from Webster, last year's State A champ. Roncalli then went into a four game slump, losing to the stronq 0'Gorman, in the two schools first meeting, losing to the improved Miller; playing a good but losing battle against the Indians and finally losing to Chamberlain. The Cavaliers went into the sectional play with a impressive five game winning streak defeating Notre Dame, Groton, Sisseton, and two sec- tional teams, Mobridge and Redfield. Sectional Roncalli went down in defeat in their first Sectional Tournament but not without gaining the respect of many caqe fans. The young team, in only their second year, wrestled some of the finer teams in the state. They opened their season against the Lemmon Cowboys, in which they were defeated 39-13. The squad then ventured to Britton where they were squeezed out 24-22 in a close battle. They then traveled to Willow Lake where they were defeated by one of Willow Lake's finesf squads, 22-20. The team seemed to be making progress as they tied Doland 24-24, and when Groton arrived, the Roncalli wrestlers overpowered them 46-5. The squad traveled to Groton and again defeated them, 46-10. The qrapplers were set for revenge when Doland arrived and Roncalli wrestlers defeated them 26-21 in a well fought match. . ... . The team then attended an invitational tournament in Britton which they compiled an outstanding 2-1 record defeating Britton, Groton, and losing a squeaker to Sargent Central, a fine team from North Dakota. Sargent Central won the tournament with 106 team points, followed closely by RoncalIi with 96. The team then lost to Britton 20-18, Mobridge 36-8 and Webster, 41-5.
