Pigs IZn1y4hrce Zmtlmll E lllll TIIE TEAM Romulus started their 1950 season with their first practice session on August 31st, Most of the lettermen were back, but the SO team carried lL Seniors, including Lau, Renke, and Campbell, the key men in Coach, Harold Cass, offensive and defensive plan. Phil Renke was captain of the team, and was also voted most valuable player on the team . The Eagles opened their season Sept. 22nd against Allen Park, and the Parkers were snowed under in a 39 to O blizzard. On Sept. 29th the Eagles journeyed to Melvindale where they met a rough and rugged bunch who, regardless of the of the fact, were given the short end of a 26 to 7 scored, the 15th win in e row for the Eagles. On Oct. 6th the Eagles met Catholic Central of Monroe in a home game. After a first period scare when C.C. quickly scored Romulus then settled down and went on to win 35 to 14. Ccontinuedl Page Forty-four The Eagles gave Detroit Lutheran a 35 to 7 beating in a home game held Oct. 13th. This made it 17 in a row for the high flying Eagles. In an away game held Oct. 20th, Romulus won over Dearborn Roosevelt L9 to O. On Oct. 27th Romulus played a home game with Royal Oak Madison. The Madison boys suffered their second defeat to the Eagles in as many contests by the score of 26 to O. Next came the highly publicized game with the Eagles arch rivals, Belleville. Al- though a trophy awaited the victors the Tigers were unable even to score. Every- body on the Romulus bench saw action except the Coach and the water boy, still the Eagles coasted to a easy L8 to O victory. The Last game of the season held Nov. lOth was an away contest with Bentley High of Livonia. Bentley, previous to this contest possessed an undefeated, unscored on season. The game was played on a icy snow covered field and most of it was played in a blin- ding snow storm. Romulus played one of its best games of the year, and blanked Bentley 19 to O. That win over Bentley last Nov. Left Romulus with the greatest winning streak in the school's history, and one of the longest streaks in the state. It all started three years ago when , after snuffering a 12 to 7 defeat from University High of Ann Arbor, Romulus, hurt by this, finished the season without having a single int scored against them. In 19L9 Romulus, blasted its eight opponents into submission whilg having only 27 points scored against them, during the whole season. The 1950 season is a familiar one which saw Romulus meeting better teams but still winning eight straight teams and having only 28 points scored against them. Starting with their loss to U. High, here are the scores to the 21 games. 1948 1949 1950 ROMULU 7 U. Bob Wilson was elected the captain for this year. The outstanding players of the year were Russell Mach, pitcher, who had some fine victorier, and Chalres Lau, catcher. The squad was weakened due to the fact that All Burden went to the Army. The team ended the season in fourth place. . The highlight of the season was the L-1 victory over Flat Rock. ' The basketball players of Romulus High School are to be highly commended for their perseverence and success during the past winter. The boys had no warm gymnasium in which to practice. In fact, many times the highly successful Eagles were forced to practice with the temperature in the makeshift gym hovering near the freezing mark. Unlike other teams in the area, our boys could not practice in basketball shorts, but instead, track sweat-suits served the purpose of attive. Despite these odds, the Romulus Eagles maintained a ranking in the top ten in the state during'the largest part of the season. Coach Lee Goodney also should be commended on a wonderful job in getting the team in condition, when most any other coach would have been discouraged.
