Second row: Billy East. john Aude, Lee Gable, Alfred Lane, james Lane, Sayle Temple, Byron Farnsworth, Phillip Sorensen. Duane Buck. Third row: jerry Keefer, Sherwin Temple, jerry Yates, David Dunn, john Smeltzer, Bob Bond, jim Kelley, Eddy Kaufman, Coach Fennell. At the beginning of the '53 football season, Coach Fennell was presented the task of rounding out a team from 25 tryouts and four returning lettermen from the '52 championship team. Romulus launched' its football schedule when it played a non-league game with Phelps. The Phelps team proved to be too much downing the locals 27 to I2. The following week Romulus journeyed to Inter- laken handing the home team their only league loss of the season. The final outcome was Romulus 24. Interlaken 12. Taggerty scored two touchdowns with Hicks and Ingalls scoring one each. The next week the I:ennellmen encountered T- Burg on the home gridiron only to be upset by a close score-27 to 20. Hicks accounted for 2 touch- downs and 2 extra points with Ingalls adding an- other 6 pointer. Dundee proved to be the blue and whites' next foe, losing to us by a lopsided score of 31 to 19. In- galls, Hicks, and Harrell shared the limelight by scoring 3, 2, and 1 touchdowns respectively. The team, seeming to be on the short winning streak, had its hopes of a second football champion- ship shattered when Et lost to an aggressive Odessa team 20 to 0. The football season ended victoriously for Romulus by beating our close rival, Ovid, 47 to 38. Playing their last game for Romulus, seniors Hicks, Taggerty, Ingalls, Shoots, and Baker all managed to score points. Taggerty led the way scoring 18, fol- lowed closely by Hicks and Ingalls with 13 each. Shoots. Baker, and Preston. sophomore center, con- tributed extra points. Although the season record of 3 wins and 3 losses wasnt too impressive. Romulus was never regarded lightly by any of its opponents. The summary of the season schedule follows: Romulus . 1? Expected to fill Varsity positions next year are Lee Gable, the team's scoring leader, jim Garliclc, Milton Smith and Eddie Kaufman. One of the most inspiring victories for the team was a 57-52 victory over Ovid. the J-V Champs of the league. Romulus was one of those teams that you couldn't tell their strength by their record alone. hecause many of their losses were by I and 2 points. In their first meeting with Ovid. the team lost in an overtime by 1 point, 54-53. Also they lost to T-Burg in a close game. 6456. and 55-46 in their second clash. Therefore, with the right combination, a team equally as good as this years Varsity is expected in the future.
