The friends made here, the achievements mastered, the disappointments suffered, the knowledge acquired here have made R.H.S. a very special building. It would be difficult to ever forget the crowded halls. . . the assemblies. . . the excitement of a close game. . . the pass slips. . . the cold bumpy bus rides. . . cramming for tests. . . the discussionin class. . . the madscramble forthe door. . . And so, here is your book, the 1961 PIONEER, which we give to you. May you al- vays remember this memorable year in good old R.H.S. Contents Dedication Administration Faculty Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Junior Ftigh Organizations Activities Javorites Athletics Advertisers Dedication To you, Mom and Dad, we want to show our appreciation. For your understand- ing and unselfish love; for your encouragement when we were depressed; and for your unlimited p atience, we say thanks. You have guided us along life's way, have shared our triumphs, tolerated our follies, and sympathized with our mistakes. It is hard for us to voice our thoughts too deep to be expressed. So with our humble hearts we dedi- eate this, the 1961 Pioneer, to you, our parents. As ion, you, the younger generat cooperatively, you will take over that responsibility. In the mean- time there is work to be done, as there always will be. Students, My expression of good wishes go to eachof you forthe years ahead and I would like to tell three rules of life given me some years ago. I pass them on, for I have found them practical. The first is to Go, the second is to Keep Going, and the third is “Help Someone Else to Go. Sincerely, BERNARD D. HUGHES, Superintendent Hampshire County Schools ? AMGVTES Che Pioneer ‘67 Staff The 1961 Pioneer Staff can now resume lives of normal, mediocre people. We can “loiter in the halls and waste time - no deadlines to meet, no copy to type, no ads to sell! But we shall take with us the satisfaction of knowing that, for a while, we took our place with previous staffs as loyal supporters of RHS, and as leaders in school life. It will take a while to rehabilitate ourselves to former ways of thinking and talk- ing. From now on, cuts will be injuries, not pictures; galleys will be on ships, not proof-sheets; dummies will be dolls, not blueprints of books. Our compensation for graduating from the Romney Staff will be the record, the epitome of school loyalty, the 1961 PIONEER. Senior Class Play : | srtin, E. Pugh, T. Rannells, J. Swisher, J. Haines, C, Snyder, C. all, D. Maphis, H. Loy, B. Haines, F. Pouder, J. Burns, S. Stump. “Rockabye Baby” Left to right: G. M Beery, B. Pown The Romney National Thespian Troop 681 presented the Senior Class Play, “Rock- abye Baby, on November 17, 1960. The play was under the direction of Mrs. Fran ces McNeill. THE STORY Mrs. Millikan (Ellen Pugh) is a widow whose only son was reported killed in the last war. To get away from grasping in-laws, she has taken this fictitous name, left her home to her husband's relatives, and fled to another town, where she has opened a boarding house for business women. She is helped by an old family cook and devoted friend, Ophelia (Frances Pouder), and by Hildegarde (Judy Burns,), a cultured, attractive girl, who is acting as maid. A strange assortment of women come to be boarders. There's Miss Bascom (Carol Snyder), a prim Latin teacher, with a faithful following of girl students - Alda (Judy Haines), Kay (Jane Swisher), Jennie (Carol Beery). There's Anita (Barbara Pownall), 2 snooping, would-be reporter; two secretaries, Gale (Hilda Loy) and Jody (Diane Maphis); Pamela (Sallie Stump), a television student; two nurses (Gloria Martin and Betty Haines); and a mysterious young mother, Mary Howe (Trudy Rannells), with her baby-taken in temporarily through sympathy, in spite of an advertised No Babies. Anita, nosing about, is convinced her suspicions are right - that Mrs. Millikan” is the aunt, Mrs. Howe, of whom she had so often heard and on whose money she had hoped to sponge. She is annoyed at the taking in of the baby and determined to make the young mother so unhappy she will leave. All the boarders suspect Anita when the baby disappears; but no charges are pressed when the baby is found. Gail and Jody have long suspected Mary of being the widow of an amnesia victim of the war, a former sec- retary of their school. Their principal had urged them to look for her and beg her to open a box left with him, as perhaps helpful in finding her husband's people. When they produce the box for Mary to open, these hopes prove true; for as “Mrs. Millikan looks at the picture of Mary's husband Bob, she discovers he is her own dearly loved son. Anita is repentant; and Mrs. Howe and Mary find co i little son. y msolation in each other and in Bob's Pioneer Marching ee is Bs i ites = ge: ‘% FIRST ROW: C. McDonald, D. Hartman, S. Carpenter, C. It was the climax of the season for the Pioneers. Pioneer football reached a season low at Peters- burg where their every move was a mistake, result- ing in Romney being on the short end of a 32-0 score. Kenny Ayers had his best night of the season at Morgantown under the lights where he led the Pioneer attack that ended in a 7-7 deadlock. The Pioneers lost 40-7 to Farmington to close their nine game schedule before a wet Homecoming crowd. The score came in the final seconds on a Blue to Ayers pass. Coach Don Peter's Freshmen won four of their five games. It was the first Freshmen Football Team Romney has had. The Junior Varsity played one game, losing 13-12 to Beall. The Freshmen beat Keyser 14-12, Ridgeley 14-12, Deaf School 26-7, Keyser 28-0, and lost to Allegheny 20-6. - R. Z.
