Outstanding as teacher, coach, and school administrator, he is widely known in educational circles throughout the state, He has served as Commander of the Shanklin-Attaway Post of the American Legion, President of the Kiwanis Club, Chairman ot the Board of Deacons ofthe First Baptist Church and on many civic committees, proving himself a constructive citizen. Beloved by faculty and students he has been, through- out the years, a real friend to the young people of Rome. This freshman year now seems vague. But as we think back over these four years, we recall many imemories. Everyone was eager and willing to participate in his chosen activities. Some of us took up music striving to be in the band or the glee club, others chose athletics such as football, basketball, track, and baseball. By the end of these nine months, everyone looked forward to the coming years. After a short vacation, we came a step forward, Now we were sophomores entering Senior High. No longer were we rated as the lowest grade. This year brought the choice of courses: Academic, Commercial, Home Economics, and DE. Day by day, becoming more interested, we entered into other phases-campaigns, elections, pep meetings, chapel programs, plays and movies. Finally, we learned high school was fun and full of many adventures, ln our junior year we found ourselves as busy as ever. We kept up our work in differentactivities and were admitted to the Tri-l-li-Y Club, R Club, Journalism Club, French Club, Spanish Club, Bible Club, and many others. With this year came the election of the first junior class officers. Through their efforts and hard work and with the help of others, the Junior-Senior Prom turned out to be a big success. Toward the end of the year, the '54 Roman staff was announced. The band entered in competition to represent Georgia at the National Lions Convention, After days of drilling and practic- ing, these words came, We've won a trip to Chicago. On Inauguration Day we went to chapel and were among the first students to witness the Presi- dent's inauguration on TV. As this year came to a close and we attended Class Day and Graduation Exercises, we then realized that in just one year we would be taking these same steps. Time had passed swiftly. That wonderful senior year had finally arrived. We were serious, at last. We were the leaders of the school. This year brought many changes: a new school superintendent, semester exams and shorter school days, each serving its purpose to make Rome High a bigger and better school. There were dances, senior themes, the election of the first Miss Senior High, work on the paper and annual, Kid Day, Senior Play and the participation in a large number of clubs. Our last few days were drawing to a fast close and now we gaze back to remember the fun we had in the cheering section of a big game, kidding the teacher, catching up on the latest gossip or the winning of a big election. Every minute of these days shall never be forgotten. Now these years are over, and, as each of us receives his diploma, a prayer on our lips speaks the thankfulness of our hearts for the many opportunities opened to us by the teachers, for days spent at Rome High, and for the honor of studying in the Christian Land of Freedom, America. So, as time goes by, we depart, not knowing what the future holds, but leaving with smiles on our faces and in our hearts a lasting remembrance of our Rome High.
