gm HI TORY We the Sen1ors of the Class of 1944 entered the halls of Rome I-hgh School one hundred sxxty strong As we now look back on four years of h1gher learmng we mxss many faces that started IH September 1940 for only thirty seven are left to share m the honors of graduation As we entered these halls that fall day of four years ago we felt a l1ttle shy but proud to be called hlgh school students We had heard rumors of the torture fresh men endure when bemg taught that way of hfe by upper classmen but after the first two weeks were over we started to enJoy our school l1fe That year our subjects were Engllsh mathemat1cs c1v1cs spellmg and our first course ln sclence It was thls first year that we were mtroduced to the term school act1v1t1es as some of our fellow classmen took up band wh1le others were called to the athletic field to partlclpate 1n football basketball and baseball Fxnally we had mastered our first nme months and looked forward w1th eagerness to becomlng sophomores In our sophomore year we went to work more eagerly than ever for now we would rece1ve the admlrlng glances of freshmen and really be a part of the school Our StUd19S were hard but some found tlme for 8th19t1CS wh1le others Jomed the Sophomore Llterary Club We had settled dovxn to studles and actlvxtles when war struck our land We were old enough to reallze as we sat ln chapel llstemng to Presldent Roosevelt how much a good educatlon would mean to us and so to our country we set about our work determlned to learn all that we could ln our remaln 1ng hxgh school years We also bought war stamps through the H1 Y and learned the fundamentals of dr1ll before the y ar was over After a vacatlon of three months we entered our Jumor year It was a b1t sad demng as we parted w1th many frlends for some went to the commercial classes wh1le others chose the academlc Thls year we saw more of our classmates than evcr before playmg on the varslty football and basketball teams while those not so ambltxous chose the Jumor varslty The war was brought closer to us this year as we read ln The Roman how former Rome Hxgh students had made the supreme sacrl fice for the1r country We also began dr1ll1ng each mornxng under Sergeant Puryear who taught us how to have a m1l1tary bearmg Toward the end of the year we were allowed to Jom the H1 Y French Club Scrlbblers R Club and to publxsh the Junior Roman As the year closed and we attended Class Day and the Gradua t1on Exercises we suddenly became aware of the fact that 1n twelve short months we were to be marchmg onto that same stage and recelvmg our dxplomas Our senior year at last It had seemed so far away four years ago but lt was now a realxty This year our subJects were new and hard but we all set to work looking forward to graduatxon A new course was mtroduced thls year to the Jumors and semors It was a vocational course wh1ch lncluded mechan1cs machlne shop and draftlng We organxzed our clubs and trled to cram mto our n1ne months as much pleasure and studylng as we could Our school went into the war effort full swmg when we bought through the H1 Y S27 148 10 ln bonds and stamps durmg the Fourth War Loan Our class officers were elected as follows John Ingram president Camp Dav1s v1ce presldent Donald Rames secretary Wendell Green treasurer Kellett G00dW1H poet Charles Smlth prophet and Kenneth Cormany hxstorlan Others took the lead on the dr1ll field where Jack McG1nn1s was battallon com mander 0ur four years were fast drawmg to a close and as we looked back we thought of the fun we had had at football games chewing gum m study hall kxddmg the teacher attending Junmor Senlor Proms w1th that special someone and in a m1ll1on other ways We are now thankful to graduate in a country where our future IS our own to do with as we please As we the Semors of 1944 part from Rome Hxgh we leave to those who follow best wxshes for success and happ1ness KENNETH Comvuan' HISIOTNIB 7 Y 1 1 ' 1 u ' 11 1 1 1 1 1 . 1 ' ' ll ' - ' u 1 1 1 - 1 1 1 .
