I BUYS mm CALM HIS RY We the Semor Class of 1943 entered the halls of Boys High School m 1939 to begxn four years of hlgher educatlon and th1s year learned the meanmg of hard work of outsxde currlculum and of loyalty to our Alma Mater Upon entermg the Freshman Class we were all a b1t shy and somewhat scared but we were all totally aware of the opportunxty bexng gxven to us The studles of our first year were more dxfli cult than the prevxous year but we all stud1ed hard so as to become Sophomores a thmg we xmpa txently antxcxpated The class was made up of boys from all parts of Floyd County Lxnclale Tu bxze and other suburbs of Rome but most of the boys came from homes ln the c1ty Aside from our studxes we all wished to become members of dlfferent clubs In our first year on the hxll we be came members of the Freshman Lrterary Club the Stamp Club Dramatxc Club-and for the smarter students there was the Freshman Math Club Of course the Band attracted many would be high school musxcxans The followmg year we left the Freshman rooms and went to the Sophomore classrooms to begm our second of the hard four years Now we were really part of the school and put more enthusiasm xnto our work and xn becomlng members of dxfferent clubs whmch we thought were much more dlg nxfied than Freshman clubs Getting to know the teachers better and becommg officers of clubs we really thought the school couldnt get along wxthout us Then came the 1dea of bexng athletes because now we were larger and had more confidence 1n ourselves smce becomlng Sophomores Each pxcked his athletic actxvxty some played football humor varsxty or even xarsxtyl others went to basketball Most of the basketball players were Jumor varsmty members 1n the sophomore year Then came sprmg and baseball came m wxth all its popularity Many of the boys liked baseball and the practxce field was crowded Now we were really begmnnmg to enjoy high school l1fe Hav mg fimshed CIVICS sc1ence blology geography and the other requxred subjects for Freshmen and Sophomores we were ready to start Jumor subyects after the vacatlon months The Jumor year was the parting of the way some students went to shorthand typmg bookkeep mg and other commercmal classrooms whmle others went toward the academ1c rooms where they found a first year of French geometry and Jumor History Nevertheless we were st1ll one bxg xnto bemg for us each choosing h1s favormte club or clubs Now lets go on wxth our Junlor year We timshed about one half of the year and then came war But It dxd not daunt us for we were determmed to defeat the enemy one way or the other and our way seemed to be mn gettxng an edu catxon because the sooner we got an education the sooner we could start actually servxng our natlon Then came an addxtxon to our other act1v1t1es A semx mxlxtary program was xntroduced and the upperclassmen were selected for drxll sergeants We all took part 1n xt wlth great mterest because the more mxhtary we got now the easxer xt would be when we entered some part of the armed forces Thxs about concludes the happenmgs for the Jumor year and we are ready to begxn our Semor year After the summer vacation we were now Semors wxth a drflicult nxne months ahead But wlth chms up we started toward graduatxon-our destmatxon A new rnxlltary program was mtroduced this year w1th the local Sergeant Puryear 1n charge The Semors were first selected for officers and platoon formation was started after two weeks of progress wxth the Seniors A battalion was formed contamxng six platoons wrth a first and second ln command of each platoon A mllxtary band was also organized This mxlltary program proved to be very successful and has won much praise John Latlmer prominent athlete rn football basketball and baseball took the post of Battallon Com mander after Lewxs Ford left for servxce an the armed forces Latxmer was later reheved by Mxlton Tippin as Battalxon Commander Some had become officers of the class and clubs and some had become star athletes we all ap proached graduatlon Bmlly Hopkms a popular fellow up on the h1ll good athlete and member of the H1 Y was elected presxdent of the Senior Class of 43 John Latimer was elected vxce president Milton Txppm prophet Wallace Wxlkmson hxstorman James Poole secretary Vann Collier poet and Gus Perdue treasurer It has been a long rough road but we were all wxllmg to work hard the last year because xt was the only thmg ID our way to graduatxon and graduatxon IS the thmg we studxed so hard for and now lt IS ours May you the students of Rome Hlgh School have the same good fortune as we: the class of 1943 .1 T , , . . . 1 7 I . . y , . , u . .
