IHRLS mf CM HIS DRY It was rn September 1939 when we the Semors of 1943 entered hxgh school for the first time Happy and excxted but slightly scared too we registered at the Boys High bulldmg sxnce the new gxrls buxldxng was not completed After havmg been assrgned to our varxous classes we were told to report the followmg Monday at erght thirty That was the day we received those strange lookmg books We began to realize for the first txme that hlgh school would be no easy task because those books were thrck and their con tents looked very dxiiicult Our xntentrons were good though so rrght at first we made up our minds to study hard and get the most out of everythmg During the first three months we attended classes at the boys buxldmg Since there wasn t room for all the pupxls at one t1me the girls classes were held durmg the mormngs and the boys durmg the afternoons Just about the txme we had learned to find our way around and were becommg accustomed to the hitherto strange burldxngs and schedules at Boys Hlgh our buxldmg was completed and we moved That meant learning another burldmg all over again But this time we were not alone 1n the strange ness of a new school The upper classmen as well as the freshmen got lost rn the new burldmg We were well represented rn the drfierent organxzatxons for which freshmen were elrgrble Sev enteen girls were members of the Freshman Lxterary Club ten acquired coveted posmons rn either the marchxng or the concert bands and six were 1n the Gxrls Glee Club And so our first year 1n hxgh school came to an end ln June We spent a large part of our time dxscussmg the advantages and disadvantages of the sublects offered 1n the dlfferent courses reahz mg that we would have to choose the course of study we would follow for the remammg three years Almost overmght we grew up at least 1n our own oprnxons and when we entered Girls Hrgh the first morning of our Sophomore year we looked like dlfferent people We wore our haxr rn porn padours we sported lrpstxck and rouge and we no longer felt lxke mferxor beings but brave and ln telhgent Some of us had chosen the commercial course others the academic or home economlcs course We were again well represented 1D such school actwxtres as glee club bands orchestra dramatic club and basketball The Sophomore Lxterary Club was the only new club for which we were elrgxble When we became .Tumors we began to feel the hardships of high school more and more Our subjects became more dxflicult and we had less t1me to play around That year three orgamzatxons clalmed new members from our ranks the Trl H1 Y Club Jumor Scrxbblers and the J umor Roman Staff Many of us stlll followed our other act1v1t1es ln the fields of musxc dramatrcs and sports But December 8 of that year marked one of the most unforgettable days we have ever had None of us wxll ever forget how sad exc1ted and upset we were when we hstened to the radxo brxngxng us the events m Washington nor how tears arose to every eye when war was declared The remamder of that year was marked by a drfferent demeanor and by a seriousness of purpose which had mrngly been lacklng before In spite of all th1s however we stxll found t1me for many' glorx s dances and parties Another summer vacation passed all too quickly and we were at last Semors We assumed our place of dxgnxty and honor but learned very quickly that we had new dutres and responsxbrhtres too We published the ROMAN we wrote short stories and plays themes and essays We studied harder and harder m order to be able to graduate Autumn passed Christmas holidays slipped by senior rmgs were ordered The Semors pre sented thexr annual play m March measurements were taken for caps and gowns-then final exams in May Wlth our last year almost gone June FITSY came and our hearts began to cry as we realized we would never go to classes again wlth all our frrends that no longer would we sxt in study hall and stare dfeammgly out the wmdow It was going to be doubly hard to choose a future for ourselves and to gxve up our crazy language and customs and to speak and act with drgnxty to the outside world Today as we thmk back and recall all these things our hearts skrp several beats Even though we realize the sxgmficance of a Rome High School diploma our hearts long deeply to go back just four short years and lwe our high school days once more J Acxm TUGGI-B . f I 7 I Y 7 ' Y 3 Y 1 . , . .
