Upon your arrival you savagely fought through the crowds. You read the grafitti that the adminis- tration pasted on the windows; an introduction to our world of computers. They restricted you to your permanent residence for the entire year. Re- member creeping through the halls like a trained rat; seeking that one home- room that would bring security to your day? After finding your homeroom, instead of a piece of cheese for a reward, you got your very own cell that would greet you every morning for the rest of the year. You searched for a fellow inmate. During this search, your n ew teacher, guard, or slave driver, entered the room with a stack of Papers so high that you could barely see this new face. The teacher proceeded to herd all the new bodies into their assigned places. Then the show began . . . Reams of papers, rules, and regu- lations were thrown at you. You signed your name so many times that you found yourself writing it in your sleep. It was worth it because if you fol- lowed all the rules, you received the one paper that governed your sopho- more year—your schedule. How long did it take before you received the right schedule? Did you really use the school map hidden in that pile of pa- pers you were handed? Do you remember looking for the bridge that con- nects the two third floors? Were you offered the chance to buy one of the few elevator passes in existence? How about that maddening search for your clean, shiny locker, only to find out that it actully has no door, or that it doesn’t even exist? Finally it’s time to go home. You frantically run out the doors, hoping that the first day was only a bad dream. wer Bicdiwy SCheweer 314 { O10 Sung Sophomore Class Officers Andy McCormick president Andria Palmer vice-president Donna Dibella secretary Cheryl D’Ambrosi Kellie Vaselli treasurers Front: Jamie Avantini, Jeff Alais, Jerry Babcock. Since 1958, Colgate Seminar has provided select students at RFA with the opportunity to learn in a col- lege atmosphere. Based primarily on previous SAT scores, fifty seniors are selected to attend the twelve seminars on four topics of their choice. Professors from Colgate University teach each seminar, which of- ten involves active discussions and work in small groups. Two one-hour sessions are divided by a leisurely dinner, which is free of cost. As an added feeling for college life, one seminar is usually held at the campus of Colgate University. Otoys from Cali-Colombia, South America. | was a member of the soccer and swim team. | met my first Roman friends playing these sports. They helped me alot and made me feel at home. In Colombia, students have to take courses chosen by the school, not by the students. Students do not change classes, the teachers do. School atheletes do not play seasonally. They play one sport throughout the year. In my country, we prac- tice twice a week and play our games on weekends. RFA has given me a marvelous ex- perience; one | will never forget. Oi, tudo bem? My name is Lydia Kan and I’ve just returned from a year in Brazil as an AFS stu- dent. Brazil is a country of extreme contrasts—a land of fabulously developed industrial centers, such as Sao Paulo of Rio de Janero, and com- pletely uncivilized areas, such as the Amazon Ba- sin and the Northeast part of the country which consists of miles of beautiful beaches. AFS is an experience of a lifetime. Hello! I’m Michel Faltz, from Luxembourg, a very tiny country situated in Western Europe. At RFA I participated in several school sports. In the winter | played soccer; in the fall | did swim- ming, and | played chess all year round. | en- joyed this very much. Back in Luxembourg we don’t play sports for the school, but for the towns. We can’t play so many sports a year ei- ther. We only play one sport a year. | had a good time here, and | made a lot of friends while playing these sports for RFA. International Club The International Club is made up of foreign language students who wish to expand their knowledge of the cultures of foreign countries. The advisor of the club is Mr. Seckner. The big event of the year is the International Buffet Dinner in March. All language students are invited to participate and to prepare a food speciality of their language country. Entertainment is provided by each language group. The dinner has proven to be successful and exciting. The club’s activities during the school year have centered around fund-raising activities such as a car wash, the selling of flowers, and an ice-cream social. MARCHING BAND “BAND MARKTIME, MARCH!” is a familiar sound heard by the Marching Knights at all practices and all games, thanks to drum major John Doucette. All band members’ nerves are on edge. The performance is about to start, and they wonder if all will go well. “Drum Beat, Marktime, For- ward March.” The band proudly marches onto the field and executes another great performance. The 1980-81 Rome Free Academy Marching Band, flag twirlers, majorettes, and colorguard have once again made the football season a huge success. The season would not have been possible if the band was not under the excellent direction of Mr. Herbert Geller. Mr. Geller and the RFA Marching Band were honored in November of 1980 with the Optimist Award. Mr. Geller has also directed the band in events other than the usual pre-game and half-time performances. On October 24th 1980, the Friday of Homecoming Weekend, he led the band in a parade downtown where the Marching Knights put on a concert for the public. The floats, homecoming queen candidates, and Mayor Eilenberg also participated in the parade. Band members enjoyed giving the performance, but it was the crowd who really appreciated it. The highlight of the season was the performance put on at the Carrier Dome on November 15, 1980 when “Rome went to the Dome.” Here, the band performed before their largest crowd ever, including television cameras. This particular half-time show will surely remain a spe- cial memory in the hearts and minds of the band, as well as the audience. Here are a few facts you may not have known. (These statistics were based on the completed survey forms compiled during February.) Males dominate our teaching staff, compris- ing nearly 60%. Gloria Steinam where are you? Our teachers not only educate, but are educated. A Masters degree is held by 56% of the staff. Two teach. ers have earned their Doctorates. Many hours were spent working on these graduate hours. 120 TEACHER PROFILE Teachers are all too fa- miliar with the mad dash to a college night class after teaching. Our teachers have spent a great deal of time as students, but even more time as educators. On the average, each staff member has been in the profession for 15 years. Most of those years have been right here at RFA. The aver. age length of time here was 12 years. If you don’t think that 12 years at RFA is a long jaunt, consider this: 35% of our staff re- turned to their alma mater, RFA. Most of our teachers are married (89%). Maybe you could tell by the distin. guished looks that the average age of the faculty was 42. Believe it or not, teachers do have a life outside of school. Monday morn. ings are just as hard to face for a teacher as they are for a student. Every teacher looks for- ward to, “TGIF’’, Thank God it’s Friday. The Junior Prom was an event that will never be forgotten. On that spe- cial day in May, our thoughts were those of friendship ad and love while we busily prepared for the evening There were so many things that had to be done before six pm. The car had to be washed, flowers and tuxes picked up, and hair styled. Miracu- lously, with the help of friends and family, everything pulled together at the last hour. After what seemed like hours of picture-taking, we arrived at the Beeches. The music was soft; the light low. It was a transition from jeans and t-shirts to lace and hand- some attire. The band, Air Craft, played the theme song, “Lady” as the queen and her court danced. Kyle Mumpton danced with the queen, Kim Ciotti. Her court followed. Members of the court were: Maria Orbinati and Mark Gualteri, Jackie Orbinati escorted by Jeff Armdon, Barb Entelisano and Steve Jones and Beth Vittorello escorted by Scott Parsons Lace and Handsome Attire The Senior Ball was a tremendous suc- cess. More than two hundred couples attended this social event at Dibble’s Inn. The evening began with a relaxing dinner hour that set the mood for a special evening. During the evening, couples walked through the romantic gardens or danced to the rocking music of, ‘Rollin Easy’’. The theme song, “Keep on Loving You”, brought every- one to the dance floor. Evening Was Just Beginning It was an extra special evening for Brenda Hoehn and her escort Frank Mellace. Brenda was crowned queen. Her court included: Dawn Alessi escorted by Steve Nardozza, Tiffany Darr with Andy Steinkirchner, Mary Ann Salce escorted by Rick Parker and Patti Giannico with Ron Brement. With the closing hour approaching, couples made plans for parties. At one a.m., the evening was just begin- ning. SOCCER Front Row: T.J. The Black Knights beat undefeated Henniger High School of Syracuse. Key catches by Pat Adolfi led the Knights to a 15-14 victory. It was our ticket to the Carrier Dome, Syracuse, NY. On the 15th of November we were at the Dome. It was the most exciting game of the season. With screams and cheers of, ‘‘Rome-Dome”’, we scored in the first quarter and third quarter. The score was 14-0. The crowd was wild. Early in the forth quarter we added another six points to the score. It seemed too good to be true. Liverpool finally broke Rome’s shutout making the score 20-7. We made one final touchdown with a two point conversion for the last play of the game. We were the Champions of the Class A title. Scott Parsons was the offensive star of the game, rushing 182 yards. Quarterback Mark Blair, passed 97 yards. This victory brought us to a nearly perfect sea- son with a record of 9-1. Cross-country is an excellent sport for people who like to run and want to keep fit!” ELAINE RAMBO “Lacrosse is a demanding physical sport. Team members who do not play in the starting positions gain experience by competing in exhibition match- es. There are so many songs | hear And | don’t know which to follow. | hear many different tunes; Which is the right one for me? 1 must listen carefully to Find the one that is me. If none of these will do, I must compose my own To guide me along the path of life To be what | may be. Denise Doucette “One Great Bunch of Kids’’ “It was beautiful. This is one great bunch of kids,” boasted Mr. Valeri following the graduation ceremony This years ceremony was a tremendous success. Mr Valeri took carefully planned steps to make this 112th commencement the best ever. He appointed a Graduation Advisory Committee which involved students, teachers, and community members in the development of a policy for graduation. After months of hard work, a policy was drafted that allowed for many changes in the scheduled event For the first time, students sat among friends in small groups. They faced their family and friends. The band played the Alma Mater. Teachers and members of the Junior class participated in the ceremony. Some teachers even chose to sit with the Seniors in the stadium. “They should do it like this from now on”, said Sylvia Corkey At the close of the ceremony, jubilant Seniors tossed their caps in the air and ran off to share the excitement with family and friends.
