Student Association Politicians Jennifer Skogland, Vice-president Lori Biondi, Secretary Tracey Vandeveer, President Each year the Student Association tries to better advise and organize student activities. This year our goal was to encourage school spirit and involvement. In order to create this atmosphere, we established a time in which clubs and organizations could meet regularly. The Wednesday morning activity periods have aided in increasing attendance and enthusiasm. STASS has worked co-operatively with the various organizations in order to help them achieve their in- dividual goals. Much of this involvement was a re- sult of the two major events of the year, the Home- coming and Winter Weekends. We, the officers of the 1979-80 Student Association, would like to thank all the students who participated in the various events this year, Mr. Valeri for his co- operation, and a special thanks to Mr. Dean Woodard for all his time and help. Through the past years, STASS has gradually succeeded in bringing back the real responsibilities of Student Government. We would like to wish the future STASS officers luck in fulfilling these responsibilities. Michele Totaro, Treasurer Dedication Although JoAnn Ferlo was with us only a short time, she will always be remembered with great respect by those of us who knew her. In the few years she was with us, she accom- plished so much and touched many people with her thought- fulness and good nature. Her thoughtfulness toward others, along with her good humor, understanding, and cheerful smile, made her a true friend. When we lose someone at a young age, we feel that we have not had the chance to share enough of life’s experiences with that person. JoAnn may be gone, but memories of her will live forever in us. We, the class of 1980, wish to dedica te this year’s De-O-Wain-Sta to JoAnn Ferlo. Valedictorian Having attained an average of 98.28, Marijill Nich- olson is the Valedictorian of the Class of 1980. Marijill is a member of the Key Club, Block R, Honor Society, President of Colgate Seminar, and Secretary of the Senior Class. She is an avid participant in sports such as field hockey, basketball, volleyball, and was an All-American softball player as a fresh- man. Out-of-school activities include working as a Candy Striper and enjoying recreational pastimes, such as skiing. Marijill received the DAR Citizenship Award in ninth grade, the Outstanding School Citizen Award from the Optimist Club, a Letter of Commendation on the National Merit Qualifying Test, and the Renselaer Polytechnic Institute Medal for Achieve- ment in Math and Science as a junior. She’s been ac- cepted at Albany School of Pharmacy and St. Bonaventure. Salutatorian Joseph Gwara Jr. is the Salutatorian of the Class of 1980 having achieved an average of 98.1. He is a member of Honor Society, Media Club, and Colgate Seminar. Joseph’s musical activities include playing the viola in the Orchestra and participating in tbe school musicals, “Pajama Game” and “Guys and Dolls”. Out of school, Joe has held several part-time jobs, such as working at Friendly Ice Cream. He has won a Regents Scholarship and Plans to study math at Georgetown University. Senior Class Politicians Jon Levick, Vice-president Tricia May, Secretary Andy Fenton, President To the Class of “1980” As we move into a new decade and leave an old behind, we shall encounter a whole new life and challenges to accompany it. We, the Senior Class Of- ficers, would like to thank everyone who supported and participated in class activities. Such events in- cluded carwashes, flower sales, and our Senior Play, “The Drunkard”. A special thanks to our advisor, Mr. Kunkel. . We also hope everyone enjoyed the highlight of the year — the Senior Ball at Alfredo’s. Good luck and best wishes to all in the future. Back: David Moonan, Tim O’Meara, Jack Bentley, Andrew Olney I spent the fall semester of my junior year in the small farming town of Spring Valley, Minnesota (population 2,600). I lived with the Manley Burmeister family, and of my five new brothers and sisters only Shelley, 15, still lived at home. Although the school was small (550 students, grades 7-12), I was involved in many new activities and found the people very warm and welcoming. I have so many wonderful memories and will always have friends and a second fam- ily in Minnesota because of my A.F.S. ex- perience. Deborah Budelman A.F.S. Exchange Students Hi! My name is Paula Rodrigues. I am from the state of Sao Paulo in Brasil, and I’m living with the Merrick family for the year. I really enjoy this country, especially Rome. Many things are different for me, such as spending a whole day in school! In Brasil I only went to school half a day (7:30 a.m. to noon). In spite of the differences, I have many friends and am enjoying the va- riety of activities that R.F.A. offers. I am happy to be singing with the A Capella Choir. Also, it is super to be part of the Var- sity Volleyball Team. Living in the U.S. is a wonderful oppor- tunity for me to learn about another cul- ture, people, and customs. I know this ex- perience will be important to me throughout my life. Rome and R.F.A. will always be part of my happiest memories. My thanks to everyone who made it pos- sible for me to come here, especially my Brasilian and American families and A.F.S. SENIOR PLAY — THE DRUNKARD A Melodrama in Three Acts Mel-o-drama — noun — A sentimental dramatic presen- tation characterized by heavy use of suspense and sensa- tional episodes. The poor man did not start out to be a drunkard; mercy no! He was in fact, the penniless heir of his kind-hearted father, from whom he inherited his vir- tues. He would not be moved by that villian lawyer to kick the widow and her daughter out of their cottage. In- deed, on seeing the fair daughter he proposed and she ac- cepted. The wedding of these two paupers -does not produce any financial relief. Then! One day the villian lawyer lures the noble husband to drink in a saloon, and the effect is instantaneous; he becomes a drunkard, and the proverty increased. The villian lawyer tries to get the husband to forge a name, but he is still too virtuous for that. It’s the husband’s half-wit brother who plays detec- tive, finds out what the lawyer is up to, discovers his brother in the slums of London and with the help of his Opheliae sister, finds the true will hidden by the villian. With the help of all men of goodwill, recognition and ret- ribution is realized in the end. Among his achievements he pitched a no hitter against Whitesboro, was first team Central Oneida League All-Star, a member of the COL Excep- tional Senior team, and won the Charles Edkins award. Frank gave SPIRIT to his team, COURAGE in competition and extra- ordinary EFFORT to baseball. Seemingly without temperament or ego, he went about his business, day in day out, hitting line drives, winning ball games, never complaining and always smiling. Many students were lucky enough to have tickets to the various events in the Adirondacks. These people had an unforgettable experience and witnessed Eric Heiden collect medal after medal and saw the U.S. Hockey team battle for their first gold medal in 20 years. Our mid-winter vacation coincided with the Olympics, giving students the time to see the games in person. Night after night everyone else sat in front of the television, elated as Eric Heiden won all five gold medals in speed skating. The other U.S. ath- letes captured our attention as the hockey team upset the U.S.S.R. and won the gold medal. Linda Fratianne won a silver in women’s singles figure skating. Charlie Tickner won a bronze in men’s single figure skating. Beth Heiden won a bronze in the women’s 3,000 meter speed skating. Leah Paulos Mueller won a silver in the women’s 500 meter and 1000 meter speed skating contest. Phil Mahre won a silver medal in the men’s slalom. Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner, our hopes for a gold medal in pairs figure skating, had to withdraw when Randy was injured during a warmup. The achievements of these people made us feel good about the U.S. again during a time when we had problems of Americans being held as hostages in Iran, Afghanistan being tormented by a Soviet invasion, and a possible return of the draft for men and women. They made us realize that we still are a proud, ambitious people who can achieve anything we want Margaret Hopkins 1980 Photographs by Ww : Mr. Robert Carrier inter Mr. Patrick Corbat Olympics Utica Daily Press — ot ee = me; 4 me! | RFA offers comprehensive high school and college programs. CA Cr AS ork 4 t, Facing Graduation Faces of old and faces of new. People we know and people we knew. Growing together then drifting apart, Always an ending and now a new start. At graduation we'll all grow nearer And all of our friends seem so much dearer. And as we say our final goodbye, One last embrace and one more cry, A “keep in touch” and a “promise I will” A “remember when”, but better still. A place in my heart, you'll always stay, This is what’s been said as we go our own way. Linda Rollins
