T he idea of the original thirteen colonies and their leaders was born out of a passion to be free—to chart their own destiny of building a country out of this thin fabric called V Freedom. The break from England was not to come easily, as this fledgling was viewed as a ser- ious threat to the tentacles of the vast and far-flung British Empire. ' jt A V. -T _____________ atriots rose from every corner of the struggling country. Help came from other European countries to add to the flame of breaking the grip of England. Farmers, fish- ermen, cobblers and men from every walk of life took up their arms to defend this new- felt right to be free. As the smoke began to clear, ideas on organizing this diversity of colonies into a coalition of united states began to take shape. The form of a Constitu- tion and Bill of Rights was molded by states- men who previously were nonexistent. L ;ni. irn11,r.., ilnlMMilflirinr.rini. '-I' --- [ Hill. iLi____ - ■ - : liiiliL czrnu s the word spread in other parts of the world of this new country, with its vast do- % main and resources, thousands of immigrants poured in to start a new life. With the added growth of population, new frontiers were needed. This stretching brought new con- flicts with foreign powers who previously had laid claim to parts of the interior. s the gangling country continued to grow, internal disagreement erupted into a battle of economic and philosophical differ- ences. The battle was to leave scars which would heal only after generations had passed. Out of the wounds came a stronger fiber of freedom for the individual man. The country had survived as a unit and now its energies would be put to work in rebuilding the found- ing fathers’ ideals. K he need for new frontiers continued as movement spread West. A rapid explosion of technological advances pointed the country into the fore as an industrialized nation. A s one of the leading industrial nations, this strapping, growing giant became em- broiled in the first of the World Wars. After its success with other Allied Nations, a never- before-felt boom and prosperity was followed with the shattering bust of the Great De- pression. New leaders were sought to pull the Country out of its fall, while on the horizon new storm clouds were building across the oceans. I M .„.. ' - S Mr. David Jacobowit . Vakri Principal Rome Free Academy The challenge to America’s Educators and students looking toward our tricentennial is formidable. As the United States begins its third century, it does so as the world’s first Post Industrial so- ciety. Americans must function in a world that has no precedent. American schools must continue to produce graduates who possess technological skills, an appreciation of a sense of history and cul- ture. and a sense of humanity. All of these things will be essential in meeting the challenges of an international universe divided by wealth and poverty, abundance and famine, stability and change. We’ll meet these needs by a new emphasis on traditional American values that have made this nation great. Hard work, a determination to succeed, and a commitment to the elevation of the goals of man- kind. Thomas L. Parry Administrative Assistant Senior Class Nicholas D. Dur- ing the summer our class had various bakesales to raise money. When school started we had weekly bakesales and a car wash. On Dec. fifth the Juniors held a very successful dance featuring “CRAC”. We are sponsering the Talent Show which everyone hopes will be a great success. Our Junior Prom will be one of the best ever. I’ve really enjoyed being president. I’d like to thank everyone who has helped our class out this year. It was really appreciated. First we had a car wash then a bake sale and served refresh- ments at a Syracuse Symphony concert to put money into our treasury. Our first major event was building a class float for the Homecoming Weekend Parade. Our Betsy Ross won the float competition. The sec- ond event was the choosing of our class rings which arc being ordered in January. The third event is a Donkey basketball game in which we challangcd the classes of 76 and 77. More events are in the stages of being planned. I think the class of 78 has started out well in our first year at R.F.A. but we will have to work more on building spirit and involvement in order to make the next few years here successful. At half-time the floats paraded around the track with the Class of '78 winning with their ‘‘Betsy Ross float. It was a job well done! The theme was “Spirit of 76. Everyone was to be congratulated on the great job they did on their floats. Following that was the parade of the Homecoming Queen Semi-Finalists. It was a great success and set a trend for many more musicals at R.F.A. The auditorium was packed all three nights of the perfor- mance. All credit, with the exception of the very, very few adults who took time out of their busy schedule to help, is due to the students as it was they who wanted, fought, and succeeded in proving to the many, many disbelievers that they could put on a successful production without the help of the people who were too busy to help when they were asked. Altogether, the whole thing was lots of fun and brought everyone closer together. The cast rehearses before opening night. Above: Craig Gardclla and Ruth Talley portray Curly and Laur- cy. Missouri. This is what Angela had to say about her stay: “I feel that A.F.S. has given me a true experience to find out that there arc many different things to life. Missouri is now my second home and I feel that more people within our own country can learn so much about how different it is from your own home. I have learned to cope with things that arc important to everyday living. I’ve learned to understand people and to accept their ways in order to live happily with them. 1 have shared alot of happiness, sorrow, and feelings with my family. I’ve met alot of warm and friendly people in Webb City and I feel that a small town, unlike my own. is so different in its ways, its lifestyle and its togetherness. I love Missouri and someday I hope to return. A.F.S. is truly a beautiful program. 1 only wish that more people could share it with us. Angela Mellacc Angela with her family in Missouri. Lori Williams was elected by the Student Association last May to repre- sent R.F.A., Rome, and N.Y. State at the 34th annual National Bellamy Award Presen- tation. The founder was Dr. Miller, who confirmed that Francis Bellamy wrote the Pledge of Allegiance. Dr. Miller has devoted her life on researching Bellamy. There were seventeen representatives from different states. Each brought a gift to Huntsville. Rome gave a Revere bowl and presented our Dc-o-wain-sta yearbook to the school. Lori went to different places and did different things. The school gave a southern din- ner in their court. She visited the NASA space center, saw a concert at the Van Braun Civil Center, where she also gave a speech on government. “When they say Southern hospitality-believc it! People were really nice, I made a lot of life long friends in such a short time. It’s like one big family growing bigger each year. I did so many things I will never do again. And it’s an experience I will never forget.” Lori Williams with Lori Labcrte 195 Curtain Going Up On the evenings of November 20, 21 and 22, the R.F.A. Auditorium lights dimmed and a new atmosphere aroused. The se- nior play, directed by Michael Landau. “Curtain Going Up,“ was enjoyed by many people that filled the auditorium. Tlte play is about high school students in the production of a senior class play. Miss Burgess, the director, tries her hardest to get the kids to cooperate, but without much success. Mr. Carter, another helping out with the production, falls in love with Miss Burgess (and that doesn’t help matters much). After many rehersals the play is a success and a happy ending results. The senior class is very proud of their classmates and they hope everyone had an enjoyable evening. Tony Peterson........ Janet ............... Elsie................ Buck O’Hara..........
