ACTIVITIES 67 FALL WEEKEND This year Fall Weekend started Thursday night, October 10, with the traditional bonfire. Several members of the foot- ball team were awarded very appropriate gag gifts. Doug Arthur was awarded a bra, and Bob Bessette received a pair of stilts. After the bonfire was extinguished, by our local fire department, everyone gathered in the Boys' Gym for a dance, sponsored by the Black Student Union, which featured Bad Dogâ. Saturday afternoon, October 12, we played our rival U.F.A. We promptly defeated them again with a score of 26 to 0! During the halftime performances, the floats paraded around the track for the judges. The winning float was the Spirit of '76,â built by the patriotic Junior Class. Following that Sue Hedrington, escorted by Steve Wojdyla, was crowned Fall Weekend Queen. Her court members were: Leslie Bielic, Cindy Harris, Karen Hart, and Patty Rahrig. The band and majorettes gave another good perfor- mance and set the mood for the weekend. Saturday evening, couples gathered in the beautifully decorated gym. The Pep Club did a great job with the theme Stairway to Heavenâ. Flame provided musk, which added to a very enjoyable evening for many. The Olympks were held the next day. A large crowd showed up for eating contests, (all those pies, crackers, and bananas!), tug-o-war, bongo board, and spooling! Fall Weekend was a great success and a fine tradition to continue. She instructed the seniors in an exciting new play which was put on in March of '75. The seniors worked hard this year on their theatrical production of If A Man Answers. If A Man Answers is about a young lady, Chan tal, who is half French and half Bostonian. Her two different nationalities show up humorously throughout the play. Chantal moves to New York and marries a professional photographer, Gene, who has many models around. Chantal tries to keep her husband happy while her best friend, Tina, tries to take him away. She almost succeeds. Gene finds out how Chantal trains her hus- band and everything breaks loose. Of course, like all love stories, it has a happy ending. The seniors of '75 are very proud of their talents, and have displayed them very well. They hope all classes after them do as well and have as much fun. But it will be difficult without Mrs. Bates. This was Mrs. Bates' last Senior Play and everyone will miss her talents next year. Mrs. Bate â The Director The Cast Chantal Stacy ... John Stacy...... Germaine Stacy .. Tina Brooks .... I had two sisters, Charlotteâ19, and Greteâ22. My brother, Thomas, was 17. Two horses, a dog, and a cat made up the rest of the family. I attended school in Switxerland. I also went skiing, mountain climbing, horseback riding, and swimming. I travelled throughout Germany, Switxerland, Austria, and France in what was left of my time. Leon Jones EXCHANGE I would like to thank all the people that made this experience a reality. The memory of my summer in Turkey will stay with me the rest of my life. It proved it is possible for people of different backgrounds and languages to become like sisters. To sum up my summer, I would like to share this poem: Don't walk in front of mo, I may not follow. Don't walk bohind mo, I mov not load, Jutt walk botido mo at my friond. AFS has allowed me to become friends with people all over the world. Everyone was so kind to me, and helped my English. It was so nice for me to learn so many things about this country and experience a completely different way of life. I really enjoyed everything at R.F.A.: seeing my first football game, playing on the varsity basketball team, using a computer, taking a school bus and talking with my friends. This year has given me the opportunity to learn more about myself while also lear- ning about others. My year in Rome has been a great experience and one I will never forget. When I return home I hope to share many memories of my stay in Rome. I want to thank all the students at R.F.A. who helped me and made this year a fantastic one for me. Minami Watanabe ACTIVITIES 109 THE NATIONAL BELLAMY AWARD Patty Clifford When I was a junior last May, Student Association elected me to go to the 33rd Annual National Bellamy Award Presentation held in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Los Alamos High School received the Bellamy Award which honors one high school every year in each state while paying tribute to Fran- cis Bellamy, the author of the Pledge of Allegiance . Rome Free Academy, Francis Bellamy's alma-mater, received the first Bellamy award in 1942. As representative of RFA, Rome, and New York State, I left in October to spend a week in New Mexico. Everyone in Los Alamos was very cordial to me. I met students from all over the country. The cultural exchange made me realize that everyone is unique, but their ideals are basically the same. In New Mexico, I visited Frijoles Canyon, Los Alamos Atomic Research Plant, and an Indian pueblo. In Santa Fe I toured the Palace of Governors and b rtered for an Indian necklace. At a dance I learned dances from all parts of the country. During a rap session, we discussed America's ideals and utopianism. At the Flag Presentation Ceremony I realized for the first time what the Bellamy Award was all about. I felt proud to represent RFA. My only wish is for others to share in the wonderful experiences I have had at the National Bellamy Award. DRAMA CLUB Row 1: Patty Svttor, Cor I Palma. Bolt Hockorf. Dolor Puchyr. Sue Motwijec RADC Moves Testing Dates and Information If you've been reading the Rome Daily Sentinel lately, you are  urc to know what the latest talk of the town i : the phase out of the Rome Air Development Center iRADCl from (irtffis Atr F ce But- The iM-parlmenl of Defense has swung the budget axe and has eliminated 1.051 civilian slots and 226 military slots. Current RADC function will lie moved to llanseomb AFB in Massachusetts and Wright Patterson AFB. Ohio. About 100 people «ill remain in RADC. With a $600 million deficit in Air Force research and development, the Department of Defense says the moves: ..dire part of the continuous defense effort to divert resources from support and overhead activ- ities to combat capability and to realign defense activities in line with today's lower force levels. Once these actions are completed, it is estimated that Department of Defense support costs will be reduced by over $3 billion dollars in the subsequent dqcade. The move set off an uproar in Central New York. According to County Executive William E. Bryant ''the transfer of RADC will result in an economic calamity in the loss of some $100 million dollars annually in Central New York. With that much money at stake, area leaders immediately got together in hopes of rendering a counterblow aimed at retention of RADC. A committee was composed of Rome Ulica community leaders. New York Congressional Delega lion and other state officials. Using a formula established by the National Association of Industrial Development, the committee said the relocation will cause the loss of 1.43$ )obs. a $27.5 million payroll and an additional 5.740 job which touch on every part of the local economy. These include tech, rep ., food service employees, gas station attendants, construction workers and motel and hotel industries. It is estimated that 1.119 of the people being relocated own their own homes. With a flood of homes for sale, the real estate market will take a nosedive. Many people will be forced to sell their homes at a loss. Churches, civic and charitable organizations will have to carry on as before but with a loss of needed revenues and donations. Schools will lose some state aid due to a decrease in student enrollment. Businesses, already affected by our poor economic conditions, may go under. The eity of Rome's population will drop to under fifty thousand, thus depriving it of federal and slate aid programs. The phase out of RADC is like a snowball rolling down a hill: the longer it rolls, the bigger it gets. With the transfer of RADC personal and with others losing their job. the economy of this area by Anna Gianoico will suffer. Gas station attendants will not have as many customer U pump gas for. so a few may lose their jobs. Stores will not be selling as much merchandise so some- clerks may be laid off. and price may go up to compensate for the sales decrease. A few teachers may lose their jobs due to a decrease in student enrollment. This is not to say that these wfll occur, but they are possibilities that cannot be overlooked. The deactivation of RADC doesn't make sense economically. The Command Control and Com munications Laboratory Center which the Air Force seeks to set up at llanseomb Field. Mas , is essential to National Security. The Secretary of the Air Force. John M McLueas. told Congressmen Mitchell and Stratton âobviously we have not done 100 per cent of the suff work we should have done. by Stanley Lewan Juniors will be able to exhibit their academic skills on the SAT on April 5. The First Two Basketball Games IThr Shape of Thing to ( one?) by BUI Perrj With two victories behind them at this writing, the R.F.A. Orangemen look to be at pre dieted. The team has to run to keep winning. When not running, the team just does not jell together. But when they do run they look almost like the world Champion Boston Celtica. The team has played Ml. Pleasant and Whilesboro so far this year and defeated them by almost idientieal scores. These scores were 61-49 and 634«. respectively. In the Mt. Pleasant game the Orangemen's sophomore Joe Mor Its lifted the team with 12 points during a third quarter 14 2 spurt. Joe Mortis ended up with 14 point but Ernie Coleman had a high of 20 point and also became the star of the game. According to Coach Evans. âKevin Parker played an excellent defensive game against 6 foot 9 inch Mark Keenan. I feel that this wss a total team effort. Other contributing scorers were Dave Dixon and Terry Pardur with 10 points. In ending this report on the Mt. Pleasant game the combined effort of the full court press and great shooting of the team pulled out their first victory. With Ernie Coleman leading all scorers with 24 points, the R.F.A. eager defeated the Whilesbor Warrior 6349. The team started off sluggishly with terrible ball handling. Only Ernie Coleman's 8 points kept Rome in the game during the first quarter. Led by eo-captian Terry Pazdur, the Romans had a 17 7 second quarter spurt. The name of the game was defense as the Orangemen held the Warriors to 30 points in the final three quarters. R.F.A. returns to action with opponent such as Notre Dame (their chief rivals in the C.O.L.) in January.
