NOTTINGHAM, SYRACUSE PROCTOR NEWBURGH NOTRE DAME U.F.A. WHITESBORO NEW HARTFORD AMSTERDAM Fall Weekend '73 Beginning with a float parade on Friday after- noon, November 2, R.F.A.'s Fall Weekend '73 got off to its official start. Several clubs spent many hours constructing their own original mobile structure. A trek through downtown Rome began immediately after school. The floats were also paraded at half-time of that night's football game where the 1st place award was given to Student Association's Log Cabin. 10 I Rain-drenched but nostalgic, the half-time ceremony at the R.F.A. vs. Amsterdam game was a success. R. F.A.'s majorettes led the show with boxes of floating balloons and, of course, the R.F.A.Band. The crowning of Shelley Gardner as Fall Queen and her court, Ann Cianfrocco, Cathy Coviello, and Wendy Calnero, cli- maxed the evening's entertainment. Early Saturday morning several S. T.A.S. members headed by Mr. Don Boardman began the massive task of disguising the boys' gym into a fall country1 setting. With a ceiling of balloons, scattered tables, jack-o- lanterns, and the tunes of Train, R.F.A.'s semi-formal was ready to be unveiled. The dropping of the ceiling and the popping of balloons ended a great evening of entertainment for all those who attended. On Sunday, students shed their suits and dresses and replaced them with jeans and T-shirts for the Olympics . The organization, which had won many awards in its relatively short exis- tence, suffered great setbacks at the start of the year. The first problem was the loss of financial backing by the Board of Edu- cation. 1 he students were under greater pressure to get ads for the paper. The Echo also lost its homeroom, which had served in past years as a school-time central dis- patching office. A seven-week absence of Mr. Kan, the club's advisor, and the prob- lems in trying to find a printer for the paper all contributed to the delay in publi- cation. However, the staff's core never gave up and were still making an effort right through April. Co-Editors-in-Chief Roger fielding and Norm Sturdevant led the stu- dents in their drive to keep the Echo going. The Black Student Union, formerly the Black History Club, continued its service of providing interested stu- dents the opportunity to learn about Black culture. The Union, guided by- Mr. West, became a charter member of the N.A.A.C.P. this year. Varsity Basketball Team had a good year with the score at this time 17 wins and 2 losses. They won the Auburn Invitational Christmas Tour- nament by defeating Oswego and Auburn. They were tied for the Central Oneida League Champion- ship with Notre Dame, and they have yet to play the Section Ill's. Vito is a team captain and is probably the strongest boy on the team. He has a season rec- ord of 26 wins and 1 loss. His total varsity rec- ord is 75-9-1. Vito took first in every tournament and third in the Class A competition. He is a senior and the team will miss him when he leaves.” Wrestling The R.F.A. Grapplers had another winning season this year. The efforts of the team and Coach Jim Raf- ferty are evident in their fine record of 13 wins, 2 losses, and no ties. Besides this outstanding season of dual matches, the Romans took 3rd place in both the Auburn Christmas and Central New York Wres- tling League Tournaments, first place in the C.O.L., and first place in the Eastern Division of the C.N.Y.W.L. The Rome Matmen were led by Tri-Cap- tains Louie Vito, Vito L'rso, and Bill Riley. Coach Rafferty comments on his wrestlers: Ronnie will graduate this June after completing another successful varsity year. He placed third in the Central New Yorks, gained All-Star status and achieved a season record of 14-5-0.” Though Fred is only a fresh- man and this is his first season on the Varsity squad, he has compiled an impressive record of 15 wins and 5 losses. Fred also did very well in the two tournaments held this year, plac- ing second at Auburn and fourth in the C.N.Y.W.L. Tournament. I'm looking for Fred to become one of my most outstanding wrestlers in the years to come.” Lou was our captain for the second year in a row and the team leader. He is one of the most talented wrestlers I've ever coached. His season rec- ord was 21-1-0 while his ca- reer record boasts 90 wins and only 11 losses. He placed in more tournaments than I can mention, coming in first in both of this year's tourna- ments. Louis Vito is also the first Rome Crappler to win 20 straight matches and be C.O.L. All-Star 4 years in a row. Jim is a junior and has had a very fine season. He not only placed third in the Auburn Christmas Tournament and second in the Central New York Wrestling League Tour- nament, but I'm proud to say he also made the Central Oneida League All-Star roster.” Brian was always one of my hardest workers. His hustle brought him first place in the Auburn Christmas Tourna- ment and a fine record of 14-4-0. Brian is also gradua- ting and will be tough to replace.” John is just a freshman with three more years of competi- tion ahead of him. He placed second at Auburn and should prove to be one of our better wrestlers.” Bill's consistantly good performances have won a couple of important matches for us. He is a senior and one of our team captains. He was third in the Christmas Tour- nament, first in the Central New York Wrestling League Tournament, and a Central Oneida League All-Star. John saw very little action until the tournaments, where he placed third and fourth. John's a junior and should do well next year. I hope to see Gary go a long way next year. Skooch has improved a lot since his junior year, win- ning twelve out of fourteen dual matches. He was unde- feated in the Central Oneida League, finished third at Au- burn, and fourth at the C.N.Y.'s. Zig is a senior; he finished his high school wrestling ca- reer with a 15-4-0 record. He also earned a first place at Auburn and a fourth place at the Central New Yorks. JtoMahar Filling in for an injured John Filer (a senior) was David Miller (a junior) and Jimmy Pratt (a sophomore). Both boys worked hard and have good wrestling potential.” A Cappella Choir The A C appella Choir, under the able direction of Mr. Moonan, gives the students a chance to sing with a group. I had a great opportunity- to come to your country and spend a year in a new community. A year was enough time to get to know people and your way of life, to see differences between two countries, to learn about others and myself. In this time I've seen so many interesting things and places, met many nice peo- ple and the best of all I've got something that will always be with me, in my mind- a great experience. My hometown is not very different from Rome, looking from the outside, but even there, there are many little things which are different. All this makes me feel important. Important in the meaning that I was able to pick up all these things, to learn, and I know when I get back home I'll tell all my friends about the happi- ness and understanding that I have found here. I want to thank all my friends at R.F.A. for helping me find my way and making this year unforgetable for me. Thank you for giving me the best family I could possibly wish for. In my future life I know this will help me a great deal-in my university work as well as in my contacts with people. I hope we'll keep in touch and if you ever decide to visit Yugoslavia, let me know. I'll be glad to show you around. 52 Anka Janjic John Jackson As an American Field Service student in Argentina, I lived with a young doctor and his family. In my city of Firmat, each day offered new experiences. Each morning brought with it a chance to learn more of the people and their culture. The memories of my school days in Argentina shall remain with me, for I saw so much and made so many wonderful friends. I worked in a factory and participated in athletics at the clubs. Both were great opportunities for gaining insight to the tri- umphs and tribulations of the people. I was able to grow in other aspects also. One's knowledge of the culture is not all which might be developed. As I listened and learned more about the Argentines, I learned more about myself. I developed an appreciation for others, became more self-assertive, and independant. I did and saw things I'll never forget—the year was exciting and informative. A.F.S. was a wonder- ful experience which I hope others will be able to share in, just as I did. Ipokros Row 1: Marty ZcppHcOo. Joe Marotta. Linda Johruon. Valerie Corigliano. David Martin Row 2 Pa.
