ROME FREE ACADEMY DE-O-WAIN-STA Someone once said, “‘Friend ship is a two-way street with no stop signs.” This is especially true when we consider Mr. Furiel Mr. Wise, and all the other teach- ers who are leaving R.F.A. this year. For many years they have offered the students at Rome Free Academy friendship and guidance. Although they will no longer walk the halls of Rome Free Academy, their spirit will be warmly remembered for years to come Mr. Ralph E. Furiel has been with the Rome School System for the past twenty-five years, four of which were spent as principal at Rome Free Academy. Before his position at R.F.A. he served the Staley Junior High administration for twelve years. Previous to his admin- istrative positions, Mr. Furiel was a Math teacher at the old Rome Junior High School. Mr. Furiel was devoted to the students at R.F.A., and he will be sincerely remembered. Mr. John Wise has been director of the Rome Free Academy Band for the last twenty-two years. An excellent musician and a good friend to all, “Prof.’’ has been an integral part of Rome Free Academy’s social life. This year he will take a new position as Director of Music in the Rome School System. We all wish him our best, and we want to thank him for all his years of fine guidance. - £ se Somer . — ——- = Mr. Lowerre Mr. Pascucci Superintendent and Board of Education The Superintendent of schools, Walter Lowerre, and the Board of Education supervise all the public schools in Rome. Mrs. Myrick, Mrs. Bertone, Mrs. Petenelli, Mrs. Mosca, Mrs. Garafolo, Mrs. DeMarco. | Kim Sasenbury—Pres., Mr. Kelly—Advisor Now that we've survived the trials and tribulations of public school we're ready to face the outside world. Our hopes are high and our goals are many. As each of us go our separate ways, either to an establishment of higher learning or to some line of employment, we hope success will be on our side. Our years at RFA are indelibly etched in our minds. Initi- ation, the annual bonfire, Fall Weekend, our Thanksgiving drive, PSAT’s, Merit Scholarship Exams, our Junior Prom, class rings, Regents Scholarship Exams, College applications, our Senior Ball, and finally our Graduation; it’s a lot to think about, but they are all memories that will not soon fade from our minds. RFA has played an important part in shaping our lives for the future and we hope that someday our paths will bring us back to the hallowed halls of our old Alma Mater. Pat Woodward—Treas. The committee that selects the designs and orders the rings was, for the first time, elected by the class. We had the Jr. Prom in March, and also plan to have a picnic. We have organized an active beautification committee which spearheaded clean up of cafeterias. Sophomore Class Officers The huge class of 1975 endured initia- tion, elected officers, forget their Strough- Staley rivalry, and settled into life at R.F.A. They raised money for their treasury through the sale of sew-on patches, enthu- siastically joined scores of inactive clubs, and generally basked in the glory of being R.F.A. students. Again this year over sixty R.F.A. students received Regents Scholarships. These Scholar- ships were awarded on the basis of the scores on the Regents Scholarship exams given on October Fourth. The students are tested in the following areas: English, Social Studies, Art, Music, Mathematics, and Science. Letters Of Commendation The PSAT National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test measures selected verbal and Mathematical abilities generally associated with academic achievement in college. The test is offered to juniors in the fall. As a result of taking the test students have a chance to qual- ify for ascholarship. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation prepares a Selection Index from the scores obtained on these tests to identify candidates for administered scholarships. In the PSAT NMSQT taken by the class of 1973 there are 6 present seniors who are scholar- ship semi-finalists. In addition to the six semi- finalists, there were 25 R.F.A. students who received Selection Index scores high enough to be declared Letter of Commendation Winners. Though these students do not qualify for scholarships from the NMSC, they receive recognition for excellent achievement on this test in the form of a certificate and Letter of Commendation from the NMSC. Rome Free Academy is a host school serving as a Colgate University Seminar Center. Fifty of our most able senior students from surrounding school systems are exploring college subjects of their choice in four cycles taught by out- standing college professors. The seminars are designed to be interesting “broad horizon’ programs which will assist the student in reaching decisions on future college learning. It is also hoped that the seminars contribute to the general cultural development of both the individuals and the schools. The Red Cross Club is really zipping right along this year. Under its new name, “Love”, it has given a Thanksgiving dance, sponsored a walker for the March of Dimes Walk-a- thon, and plans to have a movie and another great dance. The candy sales are booming. Club sponsors many money making projects throughout the year. These activities enable a foreign exchange student to come to Rome. The club also enables students from our area to apply to travel to another place. This year American Field Service is sending John Jackson to Argentina. He will stay with the Aquiles J. Torres family and will return to the United States next February. A year is a short period of time, but I know that this year in the United States will have great influence on my future. I have learned so much this past year about this country and the people, small things that I hope have made me un- derstand the life here, and I know I will take a more mature self back to my country. My experience is based on simple things, and I have really enjoyed staying with my American family and going to an American High School. The things I have learned at R.F.A. haven't only been math and history; I have also learned things that cannot be measured in marks or credits, things that will always remain with me. I will always re- member the fun things, like seeing the football games, dreaming my first dream in English, and eating corn-on- the-cob. And how can I ever forget all the nice people I have met? I have met so wide a variety of people, and this will help me to get along more easily with people | will meet in the future. Rome is so different from my home town, and the United States and Norway are also different, but just this has made this year so interesting, and I have been able to find favorable and unfavorable sides of both the countries. I want to thank all the students at R.F.A. who have made this year a happy one for me, and I hope to hear from you all in the future, when I go back to Norway and further education. —Siri Gjonnes My summer in Panama was short, but much was learned. I lived in the house of Edgardo Lombardo with his wife, son, and daughter. I attended an all girl’s Catholic school as well as a public school. In the evenings I taught an English class. In my free time I went to the beaches, sight-seeing, or studied Spanish. I was able to compare the lives of a city dweller with that of a farmer, which were extreme opposites. I was able to see such national sights as the Cathedral of Old Panama and the President's palace. My stay was ended with a party given by my friends, a tour of the San Blas Islands, and my return to the United States. —Cynthia Schaller De-O-Wain-Sta Editorial Staff The De-O-Wain-Sta Editorial Staff is responsible for the publication of the yearbook.
