Ending only their second year of overseeing, disciplining, organizing, and directing the student body, they have shown that long experience is not a prerequisite to excellence. Our new superintendent of schools is Mr. John MacDonnell. He and his family have come from Newport, Rhode Island, to settle in Rome. Mr. MacDonnell supervises the hiring of teachers, the deciding of the school calendar, and the planning of the curriculum.for the Rome schools. These decisions are discussed and passed or rejected by the Board of Education which serves as the school system’s contact with the community. The Board, which is responsible for the Rome School District, passes the budget and matters of policy, and approves the teaching and adminis- trative staffs. They also hold a grievance commit- tee where the people of Rome may express their John MacDonnell ; i views on education.
