With their help, we learn to cope with our problems as well as acquire adequate information about tests and colleges. We would be very lost and confused without these perceptive counselors. Luther Meekins Patrick Stirpe Dorcas Watters, Chairman Guy Burneko Mary Downing English “Looking over manuscripts of unpublished rhyme” Under the supervision of Dorcas B. Watters, the English Department supplements its teaching materials with films and records in appropriate areas of study. There has been a recent stress on practical usage with more emphasis on composition and creative writing as well as on critical writing. Students practice communicating their ideas both through writing and through speaking. To provide a clearer understanding of certain plays and books, field trips are planned to see the productions as they are performed on the stage and in the movies. Se NER oF at Te Kirk Hinman, Treasurer; Richard Toepp, Secretary; Reena Bucknell, President: Lauren Weissman, Vice-President THE CLASS OF 1969 It’s hard to believe, but our high school years are almost over. The three most memorable years of our lives have passed us by. A time it was and what a time it was! Our sophomore year found = us experiencing the bewilderment that faces every new sophomore class. We survived the sale of elevator tickets, forced choruses of the Alma Mater, and established a strong foundation for our future years. The Class of 1969 certainly made itself known in its junior year. Working together, enthusiastic class members, with the help of Mrs. Hubbell, transformed the gym into a psychedelic wonderland of a “Sky of Diamonds.” Our hard work and diligence brought us top honors in nearly every drive and class competition. And in May, when our rings arrived, we were filled with the anticipation of our senior year. Our senior year has been everything that we hoped it would be. Although we saw our football team lose its first football game in five years, we produced even more ORANGE POWER in our following games. Our fabulous Senior Play, “Time Out For Ginger,” broke all records for a capacity sellout. Then the plans for our Senior Ball began. And it will go down in the records of R.F.A. as the greatest Senior Ball in the 100 years of Rome Free Academy. It was a time of innocence, a time of confidence. It was the end of a century of Rome Free Academy’s history, yet for all of us it will bring a new beginning. After anxious girls greeted their nervous Sir Galahads and paused for picture-taking, they were off for a magical, memory-filled evening. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of Jennifer Caron as Queen. Members of her court included Jan Tietze, Bonnie Dean, Wendy Caswell, Barb Drexler, and Terri Ryan. Mrs. Robert Hubbell spent a great deal of time with enthusiastic members of the junior class to recall the days of Gone With the Wind. | nnpennaaad Yoshiro When I first came to RFA last September, I was very excited by the opportunity to experience American student life. Of course, I was also a little nervous about coming to a strange place. But my eagerness to learn new things overcame my apprehension. The size of RFA is almost the same as the size of my high school in Sapporo, Japan about 1,500 students. Japanese students study under the same system that RFA has. School begins at 8:30 in the morning and ends at 3:15 in the afternoon, with six periods everyday. Vacation schedules are different, but the Japanese school year consists of 42 weeks. Students at RFA have been very nice to me. They have helped me in my studies and social activities. They have given me an impression of enjoying themselves in school. During the past year at RFA I have learned a great deal. I have had interesting classmates. As a result, my classes have been stimulating. As I prepare to return home, I have pleasant memories of RFA, my teachers, and fellow-students. I will go back to Japan with great fondness for the people in Rome, New York, and the United States. YOSHIRO GOTO Dave An AFS experience is almost indescribable. It’s not just traveling abroad, but it’s living and adjusting in another culture in another family. ; I left Florida in the middle of the night, and by early morning | was in my new bedroom unpacking all my belongings. My first couple of weeks were mass confusion with the Spanish language. However, after I broke the barrier, I discovered a great new life in the Ecuadorian style. I made new friends who showed me around the city, took me mountain climbing, and taught me the social customs of the country. Hunting made another great pastime. We hunted turtle doves, deer, and trophy birds. We watched and played soccer on many occasions. Politics played a big role in Ecuador. During my stay, the government installed its new officers and congressional sessions started. There were many political hot spots during the two months. It was most interesting to watch and listen to the opinions of many political groups. I also learned of many different ideas and opinions of our country, ranging from complete hatred to strong favoritism. AFS is the greatest thing that could have happened to me. Since my Ecuadorian family and I correspond quite regularly, my experience will probably never end. DAVID HARRIS | re oe tae ae Tits Met Ob ’ BOTTOM ROW: A Gigli, K. Patchen, J. Carrado, P. This year the orchestra helped to make the annual Christmas Concert a success. It also presented evening programs, which were open to the public, and several assemblies in area schools. Several members of this year’s orchestra were selected to attend the Allstate Orchestra and the area sectionals. The orchestra once again is proof of the high quality of our music department. Bob Domurat, President; Terri Ryan, LAE CLASS OF 1970 Our second year at Rome Free Academy has proven to be a very successful attempt at growing up. We as juniors accepted the duties of initiating the sophomores by selling elevator and cafeteria tickets. We also faced the dreaded PSAT’s and SAT’s along with the Merit Scholarship Exam. They were trying exams, but forced us to think about our futures — either business or college. The Junior Class was triumphant in all its attempts at fund-raising for the Junior Prom on January 31. Early in the fall we held bakesales, dances, and other events, which contributed to the funds. We must not forget to thank publicly Mrs. Hubbell and her artists for their hours of toil in creating decorations. Our officers, Bob, Barb, Donna, and Terry have served us very well. They provided the incentive for our success in the Thanksgiving Drive and Snow Sculpture. With great enthusiasm, the class of 70 anticipated the arrival of their class rings in May. These rings symbolize our future as seniors and the growing responsibilities that will face us. We look forward to accepting these responsibilities and hope our last year at Rome Free Academy is as successful and rewarding as the first two. ’ gas Vi. Shin Bruisers A lot of girls come to school during the fall sports season with bruises on their shins and aches all over their bodies These girls are members of the versatile girls field hockey team, which practices diligently every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights under the able supervision of Miss Ruth Solan and Miss Susan Luizzi. The. team tallied its best season this year with six wins, one loss, and one tie. The game of the season was played in the = rain against Beaver River, one of the toughest teams in New York State. The hard-fought game was decided in the last few minutes when the R.F.A. girls came from behind to post a 3-2 loss. The girls scored a total of 23 goals this season with their opponents scoring only five goals against them. A total of fourteen seniors will be lost after graduation this year. The loss will be a severe one because nine of the seniors are starting players. There is a great depth and enthusiasm in the sophomore and junior squad members, and this year’s experience should carry on the winning streak through next season. A fine team is sure to be built from the great material the coaches have to work with. In class competition, the seniors came out on top. The highly skilled upperclassmen walloped both the sophomores and the juniors with identical s cores of 4-0. The sophomores were able to edge out the juniors by taking second place with a 3-2 win which left the juniors in the bottom place. In December, the All-Rome Basketball playday is held where the teams battle for the championship. The Stough Competition is the highlight of the season where each class tries to win the trophy. The interscholastic team is directed by Miss Ruth Demers and provides the more advanced girls with a chance to play against other high schools in the area. The girls have a rough season with a lot of practice and hard work, but it is made worthwhile when they turn in an excellent record at the end of the season. Attainments of endurance . Playing it close! The thrill of victory. . . Balance co-ordinated with strength Versatile Monday nights during the winter sports season are devoted to the agile girl gymnasts who practice and make up their routines on various pieces of apparatus. Besides gaining an overall knowledge of gymnastics, the girls, under the direction of Miss Ruth Demers, develop co-ordination, agility, balance, and poise. Each girl has her choice of a wide variety of apparatus including the uneven parallel bars, the horse, the balance beam, free exercise, and the trampoline. After developing their skills on the equipment, the more skilled members of the team participate in gym meets with various area high schools at home and on the road. The R.F.A. gym team also hosts workshops with area schools which don’t have such a diversified program as the one our athletic department offers. Besides the curriculum outlined in the athletic program, some girls are able to develop skills beyond those of the average student which will aid them in future pursuits. Gymnasts After the basketballs are stored away, the volleyball nets go up and the balls are volleyed throughout the gym. The famous yells of “I’ve got it” and “Set °em up” echo from the walls beginning in early February and lasting until the end of March. The interscholastic season provides the girls with an extremely heavy schedule this year. Practice was usually held during the activity period, as new techniques were taught to the girls by Coach Miss Susan Luizzi. In early March, the All-Rome Volleyball Sports Day was held, and the girls battled against members of their own class all day long for the championship. The middle of March ‘called for area tournaments that were also all-day affairs. This year the girls volleyed their way to an extremely impressive victory at the AWPENYS Tournament. Though the season ends with many sprained fingers and bruised shins, the effort is worth it when the final score is tallied. BOTTOM ROW: Reena Bucknell, Saneen Armstrong, Janis Hubiak. Extra prac- tice sessions are held every Tuesday and Thursday mornings during the activity period to get the team members ready for meets. Interschool meets proved rough competition for the mermaids, but they pulled through at every meet. The annual invitational meet held at Rome this year saw the only flaw on this year’s record as the Romans were defeated by a strong, well-balanced New Hartford team, 53-50. After the bathing suits were finally dried and the pool was drained out, the records that were compiled will stand for a long time. Strikes, spares, and gutters usually mark the score-sheets which are tallied the following day. Bowling matches are held with various schools from the area, and a Central Bowling Tournament is held in the later part of the season. In early June, a banquet is held honoring all the individual bowlers, and trophies are awarded to the all-around team and individual high scorer. This season honors go to Cindy Frasher. “Strike three, you’re out!” is the familiar cry that is heard every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday night during the spring sports season at R.F.A. Interested ball players come to practice their skills at batting, running, throwing, and catching, to get in condition to compete against other schools. At the helm of all this activity is Miss Susan Luizzi, either playing shortstop or umpiring the game. At the end of the season, the pirls are invited to the Annual’ Chittinango Soorisday for an all-day tournament. For the past seven years, the R.F.A. girls have played their best to bring the trophy home. Last year, after rough competition, the girls were able to win and retire the trophy to Rome. This year was no exception — the girls won the trophy again creating the possibility of retiring another trophy in girls sports. R.F.A.’s branch of AFS’ers is headed by Kristen Waters as president, Janis Hubiak as vice-president, Cindy Stockwell as secretary, and Roger Ferlo as treasurer. All have worked hard to raise funds necessary to sponsor another foreign exchange student next year. During the winter, they made arrangements for other foreign students in the area to gather in Rome for an AFS Weekend.
