Robert Hubbell Rome Free Academy should be proud of its Music Department, under the supervision of Mr. Hubbell, which takes an active part in school and community affairs. Many who are unable to express themselves in words have a means to express themselves in music. Aspiring young musicians can gain invaluable experience and training from our capable instructors: Mr. William Moonan, Mr. John Wise, and Mr. Robert Hubbell. Not only are band, orchestra, and choir offered to the students, but also classes in harmony and music appreciation are taught by Mr. Moonan. The members of the three organizations are given private voice or instrumental lessons once a week. The organizations perform several times a year, both publicly and in school, fostering a reputation for excellence and listening enjoyment. William Moonan John Wise

Joseph Besenfelder The sterility of our steel-glass corridors is en- livened by outbursts of student expression. In- structed by Mrs. Hubbell, students of fine arts study design, drawing, and painting, variations of which include weaving, block printing, water color, pastels, and oil painting. Courses in crafts are also available under the direction of Miss Bellamy; ceramics includes practical and aesthetical sculp- ture, and jewelry is wrought from various metals, stones, and woods. Not only do Mrs. Hubbell and Miss Bellamy teach those students inclined toward art, but they also contribute to the student body their advice and talents for class functions. Each fall the Senior play scenery is designed under the capable direc- tion of Miss Bellamy. Mrs. Hubbell does a fine job each year transforming our gyms into mystic dreams for the junior prom. In the spring of the Margaret Hubbell year, with their heads together, these two women aid the senior class in producing a beautiful and memorable ball. Each spring students and teachers busily pre- pare for the Rome School System's city-wide art exhibit. In the past, Mrs. Hubbell and Miss Bellamy have chosen students’ works to represent the high quality of art taught at RFA. Besides students’ work, demonstrations are given in ceramics, draw- ing, silk screen printing, and various other fields. Mr. Besenfelder, in his mechanical drawing classes, has brought out the latent promise of many young draftsmen. Under his meticulous guidance, students test their skills in machine tool and die, and architectural design. Many of his former students are indebted to him for his fore- sight in encouraging them to continue in drafting. Lura Bellamy
