A Chousand Memories “ .. J ented up with a broken fddle— And a broken laugh, and a thousand memories, And not a single regret.” Edgar Lee Masters 1967 ROME FREE ACADEMY ROME, NEW YORK CONTENTS Administration and Curriculum Student Body Activities Advertising Sports Student Life In Memoriam One of the saddest memories is the death of Peter Cataldo. The year 1966, in passing, took the lives of three R.F.A. boys: our Pete, and Scott Caldwell and James A. Kochan of the class of '66. The tree, given in memory of Pete by the class of '67, will live where he could not. But it can never give to others the wonderful warmth he gave to us so freely. PLANT A TREE by Lucy Larcom WE WHO PLANT THIS TREE PLANT A HOPE WE WHO PLANT THIS TREE—WE PLANT YOUTH Rootlets up through fibers blindly grope; Vigor won for centuries in sooth; Leaves unfold into horizons free Life of time, that hints eternity! So man’s life must climb Boughs their strength uprear; From the clouds of time New shoots, every year Into heaven's sublime On old growths appear Can'st thou prophesy, thou little tree Thou shalt teach the ages, sturdy tree, What the glory of thy boughs shall be? Youth of soul is immortality WE WHO PLANT THIS TREE—WE PLANT LOVE Tents of coolness spreading out above Wayfarers, we may not live to see Gifts that grow are best Hands that bless are blest Plants! Life does the rest! The Pledge of Allegiance —Original Version— “| pledge allegiance to my flag and to the republic for which it stands; one nation indivisible, with liber- ty and justice for all.’’ Francis Bellamy —_— yey 1967 marks the 75th amniversary of the writing of the Pledg of Allegiance. This pledge was written by Francis Bellamy, a Roman who attended this city’s public schools. Bellamy Composed the Pledge of Alfeprance in 1892 to commemorate the 400th anni- versary of the discovery of America and to stimulate American pride. The Pledge was first used on October 12, Columbus Day, 1892 Today, a special award named after Francis Bellamy is presented annually to the out- standing high school in the nation on the basis of its academic, athletic, and extracurricular programs. In 1942 Rome Free Academy was chosen to be the first recipient of this award. ADMINISTRATION AND CURRICULUM Board members above: E. Louise Kingsley; Russ P. Desitito; Edward M. Vincenzi, Pres.; Donald W. Fulton; Robert J. Griffin, Sr.; Robert C. Bidwell; George B. Waters. Absent are C. Eugene Roe and Ni cholas J. Bush The Board of Education, officials elected for three or five year terms, and the Superintendent of Schools, Walter M. Lowerre, plan both the curriculum and the educational policies of Rome public schools. For the year 1966-67, changes scheduled by the Board include: the opening of Rome Free Academy Library on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings; classes in dis- tributive education, a program in which schools and local busi- nesses cooperate in the training of young people in the areas of sales and merchandising; a revised report card produced by machine and adaptable for mailing directly to homes of Rome Free Academy students; and the addition of a data pro- cessing course offered to RFA students. Destito, E. Louise Kingsley, George Waters, C. Eu- gene Roe, Robert Griffin, and Edward Vicenzi. Walter M. Lowerre Superintendent of Rome Public School System Rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief, doc tor, lawyer, and fire chief are all in the line of duty for Principal Carl S. Paige. He is the remark ably versatile and very capable guardian of the more than 2000 students of RFA. He is rich with amiability, generally lacking of thanks for his immeasurable help, and resourceful in get ting his way with wily teachers, stubborn stu dents, and budget-minded Board members. Mr Paige pleads for the health, education, and wel fare of his students, and is the familiar fellow of cheer at the end of the numerous and success- ful fire drills. He sets a fine example of schol arship with his BA and MA from St. Lawrence University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After 23 years of service at RFA Mr. Paige has earned our sincere thanks. With patience and understanding, Mrs. Helen A. Wolf administers to the problems of girls at RFA. Although her duties as a disciplinarian are many times difficult, Mrs. Wolf's interest in the welfare of student body has gained her the re- spect of the students at RFA. F. Anthony Dorsino is in his second year as assistant principal in charge of boys’ discipline. A former math teacher, he not only assists in school activities and student life but also lends an open ear to any problems that are brought up. Helen A . Wolf Assistant Principal Carl S. Watters, a new positive ap proach is being taken toward the subject this year. There is less emphasis on the technicalities of grammar and more on practical usage. This is in conjunction with the increased stress on speaking and critical listening. Because the English language is already quite familiar to the students, more time can be spent in the learning of its cultural back- gro und. Teaching of this sort is done through the use of audio-visual aids and occasional trips to mov- Dorcas Watters ies of plays. Rudolf Schnackenberg ™ Shirley Davis Leonard Milano Bernard Buchweitz yy be Frank Harvey Lincoln Kan Edward Ball, Chairman Kenneth Farrell Our Heritage— Nicholas Mammone Emilio Renzi Dennis Smith John Stromei Richard Valeri A good foundation in history is necessary to insure our freedom and to enable us to plan successfully for the future. With a thorough understanding of man’s experiences, we continually strive to profit from the past and to expand our un- derstanding to meet the future. The sophomore class begins studying World History by tracing man’s intel- lectual growth and struggle for power from Ancient Greece to modern times. With this foundation the next step is American History, which covers the dis- covery, colonization, and development of our society. In order to gain insight into the political, social, and economic theories that are such integral parts of our existence, Political Science, Sociology, Social Studies 12, and Economics comprise the history electives for seniors. Under the capable leadership of RFA’s history teachers, students explore yes- terday in hopes of contributing to tomorrow. Guide for the future Arthur West Dean Woodard Harold Woods Joseph Palombi, Chairman James Angelo Elaborate, fool-proof experiments in physics lab, explosions an sweet-smelling burned sulfur in chemistry lab, and the latest frogs in biology lab all indicate the modernness of RFA’s science d partment. Our science department aims at a solid science back ground for every student, not just the science majors. Adding to the old stand-bys of biology, health, earth science, chemistry, and phys- ics, some relatively new courses are being offered. Physiology and genetics are both one semester college-level courses. Life science is a one-semester course that gives a biological background to the stu- dent not taking biology; and physical science is a year course that gives a background in the physical sciences—chemistry, physics, and earth science. Also indicative of our advanced science department Is the second year of experimental courses in biology and chemistry. Edward Bielec Robert Garlinghouse Science—fact is sometimes John Getman Theodora Gifford Victor Gigli Kenneth Lowe Robert Paul John Stysh stranger than fiction The modernized math program at RFA is suited to meet all future tastes. For students to whom mathematics is not their main dish, there are the business math courses. Mathematical gourmets, on the other hand, will be quite pleased with the tantalizing geometric proofs of Math 10, the piping hot logarithms of Math 11, and, if the in- termediate algebra and trigonometry of Math 11 is not too hot to handle, the richly satisfying advanced algebra of Math 12A. The real math-hungry will find the Math 12C course with calculus and ana- lytic geometry just yummy. Since students this year did not demand solid geometry, the Math 12B course was not listed on the menu. As usual there will be side courses of algebra and trigonometry for students who find advanced math a little too hard to digest. This year for the first time, RFA filled the order for students with a taste for computer work. The computer programming course that began cooking during the summer school of last year has risen to be a half-year course. F. Foster Business i Joseph Hickey, Chairman While all high school courses of study offer widening horizons and enjoyment, a business course also offers a sound basis for the future. Under Mr. Joseph Hickey’s leadership, the business education department of RFA builds an excellent foundation for prospective salesmen, businessmen, and secretaries. To develop commercial talent, courses offered at RFA include Typewriting |, Il, and Ill; Shorthand | and Il; Salesmanship; Business Arithmetic; and Business Management. Because busi- ness growth is continually increasing, further courses are offered in Transcription; Secretarial Training; Bookkeeping | and II; Business Law; Office Practice; and Data Processing. New courses added this year include Personal Typing, Store Experience, and Distribution |. Personal Typing, a % year-'% unit course, gives the college bound student an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of typing. Store Experience, counting a half unit per semester, allows a student to receive credit for work in an approved retail, wholesale, or service establishment. Dis- tribution | offers a one-year course in the phases of retailing to those who haven't previously taken Salesmanship or Business Management. Starting in September in 1967, a second year in Distribution will be offered. Robert Haunfelner Helen Herlehy Education Hannah Temple Jean Svirsky Elenore Stahl Franklin Pelkey Sebastiana Kulsick Mildred Morgan Olympia Palombi Data Processing Fred Dair The stillness of the RFA Li- brary was disturbed this year by the rhythmic pounding of re- modeling. Although it now holds 86 students, the library still needs additional shelf space for more than 3,000 books. As well, Mrs. Helen Arthur and Mrs. Marjorie Mortis, our dedicated librarians, have built up a col- lection of books to supplement every student's curriculum. The Data Processing Department serves an administrative purpose, saving many hours of clerical work for teachers and guidance coun- selors. Student attendance, grade reports, and material inventory are some of the functions handled in this department. One of the major projects carried out is student scheduling for the fall semester, the spring semester, and the summer session. After all the informa- tion is punched on cards, it takes only minutes for the computer to schedule all the students at RFA. Last spring it took seven minutes, and this fall twenty-two minutes. Mr. Dair, Director of the Data Processing Department in the Rome Public School System, introduced this modern program in 1964. As- sisting him are Mrs. Ruth Lyman, key punch operator, and Mr. Victor Elliott, tab machine operator. Library Helen Arthur Marjorie Mortis Industrial Arts The pervasive odor of the printer's ink, the hum of busy machines, and piles of discarded shavings are just a few of the sights, sounds, and smells of RFA’s large Industrial Arts Department. Although most students will apply their practical knowledge professionally, some will never see a shop aside from the crowded corner of a garage or cellar. In order to meet the demands of the increasing number of students want- ing practical education, the depart- ment has expanded to include fifteen challenging courses in auto me- chanics, machine shop, electricity, and wood shop. Frank Seward L. Paul Rice Hart Davison David Weisenburger Joseph Besenfelder The sterility of our steel-glass corridors is en- livened by outbursts of student expression. In- structed by Mrs. Hubbell, students of fine arts study design, drawing, and painting, variations of which include weaving, block printing, water color, pastels, and oil painting. Courses in crafts are also available under the direction of Miss Bellamy; ceramics includes practical and aesthetical sculp- ture, and jewelry is wrought from various metals, stones, and woods. Not only do Mrs. Hubbell and Miss Bellamy teach those students inclined toward art, but they also contribute to the student body their advice and talents for class functions. Each fall the Senior play scenery is designed under the capable direc- tion of Miss Bellamy. Mrs. Hubbell does a fine job each year transforming our gyms into mystic dreams for the junior prom. In the spring of the Margaret Hubbell year, with their heads together, these two women aid the senior class in producing a beautiful and memorable ball. Each spring students and teachers busily pre- pare for the Rome School System's city-wide art exhibit. In the past, Mrs. Hubbell and Miss Bellamy have chosen students’ works to represent the high quality of art taught at RFA. Besides students’ work, demonstrations are given in ceramics, draw- ing, silk screen printing, and various other fields. Mr. Besenfelder, in his mechanical drawing classes, has brought out the latent promise of many young draftsmen. Under his meticulous guidance, students test their skills in machine tool and die, and architectural design. Many of his former students are indebted to him for his fore- sight in encouraging them to continue in drafting. Lura Bellamy Robert Hubbell Rome Free Academy should be proud of its Music Department, under the supervision of Mr. Hubbell, which takes an active part in school and community affairs. Many who are unable to express themselves in words have a means to express themselves in music. Aspiring young musicians can gain invaluable experience and training from our capable instructors: Mr. William Moonan, Mr. John Wise, and Mr. Robert Hubbell. Not only are band, orchestra, and choir offered to the students, but also classes in harmony and music appreciation are taught by Mr. Moonan. The members of the three organizations are given private voice or instrumental lessons once a week. The organizations perform several times a year, both publicly and in school, fostering a reputation for excellence and listening enjoyment. William Moonan John Wise Row I: Mrs. Prince, N. Mudge, D. As a concert band, it performs several evening concerts during the course of the year as well as assemblies for elementary and junior high schools. Popular as well as classical music is included in these programs. Each fall, as a marching band, it assumes an important role in Rome Free Academy's school spirit at the Black Knight football games and pep rallies. Intricate half- time shows are performed and the students of R.F.A. are led in musical cheers. This adds not only to our own school spirit, but also increase s the competition between the two rival schools at each game. The height of this year came with the exchange program with the band of Tenafly, New Jersey. It proved to be a rewarding experience. New friendships were made, and the music performed by the two bands was enjoyed by all. R.F.A.’s band has truly added to school and community affairs. Through the com- bined efforts of Mrs. Rocco Vac- ca, the instrumental teacher, Mr. Hubbell and the members of the orchestra, several con- certs are presented each year. This year a Christmas concert, a program for the Youth Festi- val of Arts, two evening programs open to the public, and con- certs in area schools were planned. Also, several members of the orchestra were chosen for the area sectional Allstate Orchestra. This year’s orchestra is again proof of the fine work of the RFA music department. Avail- able to the boys of RFA is interscholastic competition in football, baseball, basketball, hockey, wrestling, gym- nastics, swimming, cross-country, golf, tennis, track, soccer, and skiing. For those who would rather partici- pate in intrascholastic competition, intramurals are offered. Pool and gym classes are required of all students. These classes are necessary for graduation but are not credit bearing. Sports help to develop spirit and team- work. Continuing its active sports program, the RFA girls’ physical education department offers a wide range of intramural and interscholastic competition. Field hock- ey, soccer, badminton, table tennis, basketball, bowl- Joyce Watson ing, gymnastics, swimming, volleyball, softball, and archery are available to all interested girls. Myron Wells Kay White Practical preparation Homemaking The tantalizing aroma of freshly baked cake wafts throughout the corridors of the third floor of the new building. Yes, the home economics students are at it again. Under the capable direction of Miss Clark, Mrs. Graves, and Mrs. Hargett, these students are instructed in the culinary ar ts. However, cooking is only one part of the economics course. The students are also taught gracious living, home nursing, home furnishing, child care, nutrition, interior design, and sewing. They gain experience in these subjects which prepares them for their future as homemakers. There is also a special course in home economics available for boys. Margaret Clark Marion Graves Linda Hargett 34 for the future Driver Education Driver Education, which began at RFA in 1949, is a one-semester course. The twenty points of starting and stopping a car, driver psychology, basic skills, and the handling of traffic problems are taught by the teachers. Instruction is given in the classroom, drivo-trainer, and car. Calm nerves, and cool tempers are virtues to these brave individuals. Those who pass the course are exempt from taking the New York State permit test and may drive at night at 17 upon the satisfactory completion of the standard state road test. To teach students driv ing safety and to reduce needless accidents are the goals of the course. . va } im x 7 7 ’ Mn GN Gerald Manwaring Edwin Rapke George Wynne 35 Helen Anson Helen Bostwick In the four offices on the main floor and in the li- brary, the staff members, including eight secretaries and the nurses, often encounter complex problems of any sort. An irate home owner calling in about a driver education car that drove on his front porch, a student wandering in late because his pants ripped on the way to school, or a student that adroitly stapled his thumb to his history folder all reflect the type of problems the staff often faces in their daily work. Although they are often interrupted, the staff still manages to keep things running smoothly at R.F.A. Doris Davison Anne Imler Bernice Hirtenstein Marie Pangburn Loretta Wolzmuth, Nurse Mrs. Weaver, teacher's aide Unsung Heroes The custodians and the cafeteria staff have long been the unsung heroes of Rome Free Academy. The custodians, under the direction of Mr. Oscar Beer, clean up the papers which we ‘‘accidentally’’ dispose of in the hall, the gum that we quickly throw into the desk before the teacher yells, and the dirty boards that our teachers forget to erase. After an enervating morning of classes, we relax over a nourishing, hot lunch made by the cafeteria staff. From chicken to pizza-burgers, all, or almost all, of the meals are deeeelicious. Without this devoted staff we’d probably have to live on ice cream sandwiches. Very often a student’s knowledge from text books ac- celerates faster than his maturity. To bridge the gap between a student's |Q and his maturity, RFA employs a corps of highly efficient personnel—the teachers’ aides. P. Muldoon Back row: A. Bertone; J. Bartolotti; C. SF e STUDENT BODY Class of ’67 Fellow Classmates: For us it’s new, exciting, unique, and wonder- ful. That very small piece of paper, our diploma, representing so many experiences of joy and sorrow, is finally ours. Three of the most marvelous and enriching years of our lives are behind us—years in which we built up one of the most impressive class records ever to be displayed at Rome Free Acade- my. Through unified effort we have placed our class at the top of the list . . . where it belongs! In fighting our way through o ur sophomore year, mistakes came fast and furious; but we never stopped trying. Our Sophomore hop, Gold- finger, must have set a new record in low at- tendance, and our attempt to sing our way to the top in the Thanksgiving drive was not suc- cessful. But we bounced back, and our Junior year enthusiasm was tremendous. Our victory dance following the UFA game was a great suc- cess; and, thus, encouraged, we moved forward. Car washes, which often found us wetter and cleaner than the cars, and bake sales in which we literally ate up the profits were common in our quest for money. The money rolled in and we put it to good use in our Junior Prom, which, in the words of our art advisor, Mrs. Hubbell, was “just about the cutest ever.”’ Our Senior year has been full of happiness. Happiness is being the best all around class in the school. Happiness is never seeing Rome Free Academy lose a football game. Happiness is a packed auditorium when the curtain rises on our senior play, Head in the Clouds. Happiness is taking that very special girl to an unforgettably wonderful senior ball. But most of all, happiness is having a thousand wonderful memories of Rome Free Academy behind us. Their profit from their experiences as sophomores was measured in the unity and enthusi- asm with which they entered their Junior year. Carol, Steve, Gabriele, and Frank were elected to lead the class in this important year. The highlight of the year was the Junior prom, ‘The Days of Wine and Roses”. Thanks to the untiring efforts of Mrs. Hubbell and the prom committee, it was an unforgettable event. The P.S.A.T. in October, followed by the Merit Scholarship and College Board examinations helped them to realize that it is time to turn their thoughts to the future. Receiving the long-anticipated class rings instilled in the Juniors a new pride in belonging to the Class of '68. The promise of an exciting senior year seems to be reflected in their sparkling stones. To mini- mize their confusion, the halls were hung with helpful posters directing them to the nearest elevator ticket vendor and reporting upcoming alma mater rehearsals. Their friends, the benevolent upperclassmen, were more than willing to misdirect them. But, as time showed the way, the sophomore class was on its way to a memorable year. Their first step on the road to unity was the sophomore election, and they put their faith in Ernie Panasci, Reena Bucknell, Dave Harris, and Anthony Grasso. At Christmas time artistic talent and enthusiasm transformed the usual institutional atmosphere of RFA into one of Christmas cheer. To obtain funds for their Christmas decorations, in which the theme was “Santa and the 69’ers,’’ several of their classmates dressed as Santa Claus and went to the homerooms asking for contributions. The grand total was well over what they anticipated. In the tradition of past Sophomore classes, their Sophomore Hop was a truly unique experience. Now the storm is ended, and the Class of '69 is firmly established at RFA. They look forward to their Junior year with confidence and anticipation. Ernie Panasci President . ve . This meager orange paper entitles its holder to join clubs, serve on committees, run for class office, vote in school elections, and enter many dances at half price. This enormous organization needs capable lead- ership. Directed by Mr. Franklin Pelkey, our co-ordinator of extra-curricular activities, and guided by the constitu- tion which can be found in the trusty Student Hand- book, the Student Association is the backbone of all school activities. The cabinet includes the three classes’ presidents and three Student Association officers. The Student Council, the second governmental body, is comprised of homeroom chairmen; it acts as a mediator between our large student body and the governing nucleus. The council leads every phase of life at RFA as well as some community affairs. We can all fondly recall this year’s host of happenings headed by this council: the Thanksgiving drive; orientation of Cecilia Landahl, our Swedish exchange student; great pep rallies in the stadi- um; and, of course, the annual UFA bonfire and victory celebrations. This experience in government is surely one of the important phases in our education at RFA. Library Council One of the oldest service clubs in existence at R.F.A., the Library Council, under the guidance of Helen Arthur and Marjorie Mortis, has again this year upheld its long tradition of service by improving the Library's operations. Donating one study hall a week, its members are found daily working with the librarians. They maintain the college catalogues, the career and vertical files, cover new books, shelve returned ones, file magazines, and assist the librarians at the front desk with attendance and routine desk work. Without their assistance the maintenance of our library would be virtually impossible. Renovation of the library early last year added a new reference room for the use of small study groups. Through dances, support of sports, the bonfire, Fall weekend, and pep rallies, the Pep Club, aided and advised by Mrs. Helen Arthur and Mr. Edwin Rapke, has epitomized the mean- ing of school spirit and pride. This, to- gether with the profits from the dance, was used to purchase a color television set for a local hospital. In early spring the club members sent a large chest of personal and school supplies to less fortunate students. The club also sponsors the Talent Show, proceeds of which are used to aid the needy. The Debate Club began a tumultuous year with the ram- bunctuous Sophomores challenging the confident Seniors. The topic was the future of the Republican Party. The Sopho- mores, represented by Roger Ferlo, Joe Fontana, and Bill Griffith, took the negative position opposing opposing Seniors Ed Eitches, John Preneta, and Michele Rouillier. After the dust had cleared, the Seniors emerged victorious leaving the Sopho- mores to profit from their mistakes until future debates offer an opportunity for redemption. Sponsored by Mr. Harold Woods, the Debate Club's purpose is to stimulate discussion and to promote confidence in public speaking. This is done by debates between schools as well as between classes and members. As a special stimulus, yearly prizes of $10 each are rewarded to the best boy and best girl debater. Some of their duties include: carrying diet trays, cleaning out wastepaper baskets, answering the lights on pa- tients’ doors, entertaining the children, and putting materials in the laun- dry room. Besides helping at the hospitals, the ‘‘candy stripers'’ have an annual Christmas party and capping ceremony. Senior future nurses are capped at the end of the year, and the other future nurses receive pins for their services. Hey! Where? Where? We want a goal over there! ' is heard from the chanting sideline spectators. Once again that glorious game for girls, field hockey, has initiated the fall sport season. Coached by Miss Marilyn Thomas and Miss Ruth Solan, the RFA girls drill and scrimmage in preparation for their tough competition from area schools. Al- though the team lost their senior main- strength, they were able to establish a re- spectable record with many impressive vic- tories. Neither rain, sleet, fog, nor snow could keep these dedicated girls from the hockey field when their hockey sticks (and their coaches) called them! ; - . Row I: Denise Bilotti, Gienda Glasso, Kathy Patane Row II: Dale Williams, Wendy Kohli, JoAnn Grieco, Nancy Barnes, Barb Mativesko. Form-Fit Females After school, in fall and in spring, en- ergetic girls grab their rackets and head for the tennis courts. Greeted by Miss Demers, they then proceed to demon- strate their various levels of skill. The ‘clumsy but hopeful’’ beginners, sepa- rated from the “experienced” experts, learn basic fundamentals—while the lat- ter perfect their skills and style. This practice leads to the shaping of a ‘‘form- fit’ tennis team that boasts its talents as the girls defeat other highly ranked teams from neighboring towns. Row I: Ann Furiel, Bonnie Lauri, Debbie Miller, Row Il: Maryann Davidson, Joan Miles, Marcia Kanoff, Sharon Pritchard. Birdies and Bows Despite the many broken arrows, scraped elbows, and near-punctured onlookers, the girls:of the R.F.A. archery team dauntlessly continued their shooting. They entered com- petition with various area schools with a definite handicap both tall and spring. Oth- er schools’ physical education departments include archery as part of their mandatory programs, while it is considered only as an extracurricular sport at R.F.A. Enthusiasm for the sport is apparently growing, how- ever, because an archery club was formed this winter, Members as well as other interested girls met four days a week to do battle with the targets. LWA Row I: Janice Toepp, Anita Pomilio Row II: Lorraine Bald win, Janice Bryan, Brenda Altier For the ‘indoor girl’ our fall sports program offers various games to keep in shape as well as provide a social atmosphere for the participants. Without the tension of a heated contest with interscholas- tic teams, the girls are able to re- create in a relaxed manner. Mrs. Watson is at the helm of these games as paddles and rackets are put “into the swing of things” for a season of fun and exercise. Row |: Lorraine Baldwin, Grace Tanner Pins and Papers Each year the winter season rolls into action with the sound of falling pins and clashing balls. The girls practice and compete with other schools at a local bowling alley and are able to receive : needed assistance from Mrs. White, wr4 their faculty advisor. Bowling has be- come a major sport at R.F.A., as inter- 1 est is accelerated yearly. Row I: Susan Beer, Marlene Zbiegen, Nancy Colasanti, Maria Pasalaqua Row |: Pat Meier, Joan Rutz, Linda Kanwischer, Cindy Stannard Brenda Warcup Head Manager These amiable girls you see seated at desks in the gym office are none other than the ‘‘personal secretaries’’ of our physical education staff. They sit with ears tuned to the phone and eyes turned to any ‘‘would-be burglars’’ that might walk away with the filing cabinet! Brenda Warcup, as head manager, sets up a schedule to give each girl a fair share of responsibility. Because of the important service they perform, the man- agers receive points toward their var- sity Block “R ’. From November to December, anyone pas- sing by the girls’ gym after school was apt to hear unified panting and see streaks of blue. Why? Because for the first time in many years, the girls were given the use of an unlimited dribble as opposed to the obsolete three-limit dribble. Always one of the most participated-in sports, basketball for girls has gradually become very similar to the boys’ game. With a heavy in- terscholastic schedule, the girls are able to dis- play their old and new skills at various playdays and tournaments. UR’... . “Garry”... ..are all familiar sounds heard at a girls’ volley- ball game. Along with these come the fun and excitement of a_ thrill-packed, ball- smashing contest between two enthusiastic teams. During the winter months from Jan- uary thru March, any interested girl, regard- less of skill, may play on an intramural team. From these girls, an interschool team is chosen for a season of highly competitive games with area schools. Under the direc- tion of Miss Marilyn Thomas, these girls prepare for the annual volleyball tourna- ment held in Rome, with over twenty schools in attendance. This is the supreme highlight of a spectacular season. Row I: E. Bidwell, T. Michili, M. Hall Row Il: Amy LaPlante, E. Richie, B. Guaspari, B. Mataviesko, J. Smith, T. Walsh, M. Mataviesko, K. Durr. Row Ill: K. Waters, M. David- son, D. Davidson, D. Jones, P. Barney, G. Salce, M. Goldstick, K. Faulkner, J. Grieco, J. Brodock. Agility, balance, coordination, strength, and endurance are five in- gredients that help mold a good gymnastics team. Practicing under the supervision of Miss Demers, the girls develop their skills to the fullest. This year, only the Olympic pieces are being used in compe- tition, with the addition of the trampolene. These pieces include the balance beam, the uneven parallel bars, the vaulting house and the free exercise routine. Anyone may. participate in the intramural ac- tivity, and those showing exceptional ability compete with other schools at organized meets. Seekers Row I: S. Flanders, A. Furiel, A. Haerle, C . The Rome Mermaids have emerged as a vital part of the winter sports season. The girls rigorously practice twice a week in preparation for their tough meets with area schools. Events include the freestyle sprints, the relays, and the fancy diving competition. An outstanding performer and hope for next year is Jill Bro- dock, who set a pool record in the 50 yd. freestyle. Under the supervision of Mrs. White, the mermaids swim against such awesome rivals as New Hartford, Herkimer, and Lowville. G-r-f-r-r VI-CT-O-R-Y!! Spearheaded by that dy- namic red-head, ‘‘Dutchy’’ Glasso, our cheering squad has excelled in bounce and vivacity. Their peppy smiles along with their ‘‘go-get 'em” spirit leave the crowd exhilarated. The weekly hours of practice under the supervision of Mrs. Watson certainly pay off as both the Varsity and Junior Varsity squads lead our teams on to victory. Like an actual boys’ sport, the girls must maintain a specified academic average throughout the year and are eligible for their nine- inch Block “‘R’’ upon the recommenda- tion of the advisor. What a fore- boding sound to hear. Our R.F.A. girls are fortunate that they are able to over- come such setbacks and go on to win a championship tournament as they did last year. Bringing home the trophy was a great inspiration to the participating juniors, for they have become the de- fending Seniors of the coveted award. Coached by Miss Marilyn Thomas, the interschool teams as well as the intra- mural teams all managed to ‘‘come out swinging. ’ Row |: Wendy Kohli, Sharon Martin Row Il: Barb Matav- iesko, Nancy Barnes, Dianne Fachinno Take your mark—Get set—Go! At the resounding crack of the gun, tense girls dart out like greased lightning. These girls, coached by Mrs. Joyce Watson, are members of the many faceted girls’ track team. Every spring after a general conditioning, each girl chooses one or two of the many track and field events as their individual specialty. Among the events available are the various dashes, the long, as well as the high, jump, and the different ball throws. Row I: Barb Mataviesko, Sara Urso, Kathy Faulkner FOOTBALL RFA's varsity football team rolled to its third straight unde- feated season and its nineteenth win in a row while capturing the pride and enthusiasm of the entire student body. Under new head coach Donald Bruce and his assistants, Ed Weed and Jim Rafferty, the team broke the scoring record of the famed 1913 team by averaging thirty-two points a game. The defense was just as brilliant; the opposition scored no more than two touch- downs in any one game RFA had its work cut out if the first game with a rugged Water- town team. After a couple of hair-raising fourth-quarter fum- bles by both teams. the thriller belonged to RFA. The rest of the seas on was a breeze, except for the big game with Whitesboro. By the Knights’ determination the ‘‘Beat Whitesboro” day at RFA came true by a touchdown. UFA fought hard in the second half against the Knights’ substitutes after being down 47 to 0 at half time. (It took a mammoth effort by RFA to keep the score down to 53 to 0.) Once again the winner of the COL crown, RFA placed the fol- lowing ten players of the twenty-two member COL all-star team: Paul Adey, Mike Davis, Mark Felice, Harry McGuire, Rick Palin- ski Pat Passalacqua, Ron Rakowski, Tom Rakowski, and Marty Shearer. RFA captains Ron Rakowski and Rick Palinski were also selected on the Syracuse Herald-American’s first and sec- ond all-star teams respectively. Further recognition was given to Ron by his being voted lineman of the week by WHEN-TV. Be- sides recognition of the players, Coach Bruce was dually selec- ted by the Rome Sentinel as man of the year in Rome sports. Row 1: H. Heburn, D. Dawes, D. Davis, G. Alder, M. Davis, N. Lalyk, H. The team also competed in invitationals at VVS, Proc- tor, and Watertown, capturing third, tenth, and fourteenth places, respec- tively. Larry Zaglaniczny in the lead as usual. SOCCER The soccer team, coached by Robert Bean, entered its second year a vastly improved team. Occasionally, cheerleaders helped give the soc- cer team the spirit and devotion that led to a very successful season. Captained by senior Dick Doty, the team highlighted its season by tying the best team in the area, undefeated Chadwicks, zero to zero. Startling defense was their major asset; their opponents averaged only 2% goals a game. Their team record was 5-9-1, and they are looking forward to next season with great expectations. Paul Saathoff lays one up In spite of the loss of the graduating seniors, R.F.A.’s varsity basketball team had an exciting and quite successful season. Coached by Lew Bennett and captained by Harry McGuire, the mighty Black Knights displayed their skill and agility at every game. A decorated gym, filled with vivacious cheer- leaders, two eager teams, and enthusiastic students and parents was the highlight of the season—the traditional home game with R.C.H. Again the prow- ess of the Black Knights was evident as they made their first victory against their three-year-old rival, the Redwings, with a score of 69-63. At the Red- wings’ home court, the Knights clinched the city championship by defeating the Redwings 66-57. The team with outstanding players like Harry Mc- Guire, Paul Saathoff, George Russell, Tracy Stubbs, and Gary Defazio had a good season considering their meager varsity experience. Under the capable leadership of Coach Jack Bean, the boys have developed and mastered skills requiring strength, endur- ance, balance, and dexterity. These skills have been displayed at the many meets on pieces such as the high bar, parallel bars, side horse, long horse, still rings. Some of the squad members participated in floor exercises, a field which takes both skill and dexterity. The group’s winning season was a credit to the squad members and their coach. Letters of Commendation Most students consider the Merit Scholarship exam to be the most difficult of the standardized tests which students must face in their junior year. Therefore, receiving a Letter of Com- mendation from the National Merit Foundation indicates outstanding achievement. The test was administered in March of their junior year; and the following September, sixteen members of the Class of '67 were named recipi- ents of Letters of Commendation. We are especially proud of Alan Fallik, whose excellent score qualified him as a Merit Scholarship semi-finalist. Row 1:S. Harris, C. Parry, D. Pekola, S. Williams, N Duffy, S. Di Jeroszko, C. Colgate Seminar Between October 10 and March 27 Rome Free Academy played host to eleven Colgate Seminars on alternating Mondays. Six area schools joined the fifty selected seniors from RFA in listening to college-level lectures by profes- sors from Colgate University, Hamilton College, and Utica College. Topics discussed in the sem- inars included mythology, psychology, chemis- try, art, world politics, philosophy, astronomy, and literature. The officers of the RFA delega- tions were Alan Fallik, Gary Chemelli, and Pat Sezna. On October 24 the students gathered for their regular seminars at the all-male Colgate Uni- versity campus. Before the trip, Mr. Edward C. Ball, the RFA supervisor assembled the group for last-minute instructions. Eyeing the group cautiously, he said, ‘“‘Stay together and have fun, but whatever you do, don’t get lost at Col- gate. . . girls.’’ Bonnie Bartolotti's cheerful smile, con- scientiousness, and sense of responsibility have made her an integral member of the RFA stu- dent body. Her three busy years at RFA have in- cluded membership in French Club, Gym Lead- ers, Library Council, Pep Club, and A.F.S. In ad- dition to her active participation in clubs, Bon- nie received a Merit Letter of Commendation, and was selected for Honor Society and Colgate Seminar. Her leadership was illustrated by her efficient budget management as editor of the De-O-Wain-Sta business staff. Although her col- lege plans are not definite, Bonnie's capabilities should make her a success in any field she chooses. Cathy Fitler has always been encompassed in a whirlwind of activities at RFA. As editor-in- chief of the De-O-Wain-Sta, she has kept the staff from practically going insane when the deadlines for yearbook material came around. For two weeks during the summer Cathy took courses in yearbook problems, production, and editing at Syracuse University in preparation for this difficult task. A born leader, she has held offices in the A.F.S. Club, Library Council, Tri- Hi-Y, and Archery Club, and has been active as a B.S.|. Press Reporter and as a gymleader. Not only is Cathy gifted in her leadership qualities, but also in her academic achievements. She is the recipient of a Merit Letter of Commendation and a N.Y.S. Regents Scholarship. Cathy was also chosen for Honor Society and Colgate Sem- inar. Excelling scholastically, socially, and athetical- ly is a difficult task at R.F.A., but Alecia Cin- granelli has managed to achieve this feat. As class secretary for three years, Alecia has helped to make our class a success. Alecia has lent her talents and enthusiasms to such orga- nizations as the Future Teachers, A.F.S., Gym- leaders, Block ‘‘R’’, and to the intramural sports program. As a member of the De-O-Wain-Sta Editorial Staff, Alecia coedited the Senior sec- tion. Her outstanding scholastic record has earned for her membership in Honor Society and Colgate Seminar. Alecia has been an enthu- siastic and dedicated member of the cheering squad for three years. Alecia was also part of both the Junior Prom and Fall Weekend Courts. Both the student body and the faculty avowed her fine record of service and leadership, when they awarded her the D.A.R. Good Citizen Award for 1966. The Class of en ; $ eo = ‘ ial Steve Davis is an outstanding athletic leader. As an end on the varsity football team in both his junior and senior years, Steve was named to the Central Oneida League All Star Team and inducted into the Block ‘‘R’’ Club. He is also ac- tive in handball and basketball intramurals and for two years he captained the Class of '67’s winning intramural volleyball team. In addition to his athletic service, Steve served as chairman 222 of his sophomore homeroom. Susan Flander’s school record testifies as to her notable accomplishments in many fields. Her abilities earned for her membership in Col- gate Seminar and Honor Society. Sue served as treasurer and president of the Aquatics Club in her junior and senior years, respectively, and she is the secretary of the American Field Ser- vic e Club. Theater connoisseurs will remember Sue’s performance as the naive Lois in Head in the Clouds. Her participation in intramurals and competitive swimming have earned for Sue the coveted Block “R'’ and membership in the Block ‘‘R'’ Club. Sue is also a member of the De- O-Wain Sta Editorial Staff. Her outstanding lead- ership won for her the first place in the local Elks Leadership Contest. 67 Honors: This year’s head of the “braintrust’’ at RFA without question is Alan Fallik. Al was the only semi-finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. In his junior year he received an 800 on a mathematics achievement test and an equally phenomenal 793 on his math SAT. As a senior he led the class in the State Regents Scholarship and College Qualification Test with a score of 268. A winner of the RPI bronze medal, Al has served as a popular leader of the Spanish Club, Interact, and Colgate Seminar. As President of the Class of '67 Dave Cin- granelli has worked diligently to make our Se- nior year a success. His perseverance and achievements as Vice-President of the Junior Class and Treasurer of the Sophomore Class are also commendable. In addition, he has partici- pated in Varsity Soccer, J.V. Wrestling, Intramu- rals and A.F.S. While at RFA Dave has won many friends because of his outgoing person- ality and willingness to work hard. Preparing for a career in the field of physical education, Wendy Kohli actively participates in intramurals, holds an official's rating in Offic- iating Club and presides as secretary of the Block ‘‘R” Club. But, her interest in this field in no way limits her from being the versatile, en- thusiastic, ‘‘all around” person she is known to be. She is the vice-president of Library Council and past secretary of Latin Club, as well as han- dling girl's sports as editor of this section for the De-O-Wain-Sta Editorial Staff. Wendy is also an active member of her church youth group, having acted as both president and vice-presi- dent. Two of her special interests including skiing—both snow and water, and writing poet- ry, the latter of which she says, ‘ Nobody reads it, but | write it.” Leadership, scholarship, and athletics are all fields in which Jon Getbehead has gained recog- nition. Scholastically, Jon is a member of Honor Society and Colgate Seminar. During his junior year he served as secretary to the Student As- sociation, and in his senior year Jon continued to lead as president of both the AFS Club and Future Doctors. An active member of Key Club, Pep Club, and BSI Broadcast, Jon has earned numerous awards, including: the Boy of the Year award from the Optimists Club, the Brown University Book Award, and the Junior Rotarian Award. Jon was also a delegate to the American Legion Boys’ State. As well as being a partici- pant in intramural sports, Jon has been a mem- ber of the soccer and of the tennis team. Jon’s outstanding achievements have brought a honor not only to himself but also to his school. Behind the scenes and in front of them, Steve Malone has made his three years at RFA count. Heading up the active Key Club, editing the club magazine, and running for lieutenant- governor of the New York section have kept him on the move. Editor of the school’s literary mag- azine, Rostra, Steve has also been a member of Library Council, Debate Club, and Student Council. His sports activities include cross-coun- try and intramurals. After having won second place in the Slingerland Oratorical Contest, he represented RFA at the Syracuse Citizenship Contest and played a major role in the Senior Play. Steve has been a man of motion at RFA. 224 As varsity halfback for two years, Rick Palin- ski amazed football fans with his speed, versa- tility, and playing acumen. In his senior year he helped lead his team to an undefeated season as one of the co-captains. Rick was the high scorer for the undefeated Black Knights in both his junior and senior years. He has also proved to be a remarkable track star. In his junior year he was the only member of the Roman team to attend the state finals at West Point. He is vice- president of the Block ‘‘R’’ Club and is a Col- gate Seminar alternate. As to the future—Rick plans to attend Colgate University where he will pursue a Liberal Arts course. During his years at R.F.A., Rick Palinski has proved an asset to his school because of his outstanding leadership, scholarship, and sportsmanship. Bouncy little Carolyn Parry is proof of the old adage that ‘Good things come in small pack- ages. ’ As a member of both the JV and varsity squads, Carolyn has joined in cheering our sportsmen to victory throughout her three years at RFA. Petite and vivacious, Carolyn is a three- year member of Gymleaders, secretary of the French Club, treasurer of Tri-Hi-Y Club, and an alternate for Colgate Seminar. She is also a member of the Block “R’’ Club. The student body selected Carolyn to reign as queen of the 1966 Fall Weekend. Her leadership, ability, and good judgment have gained for Carolyn the job of Activities Editor on this year’s De-O-Wain-Sta staff. Klous is the school’s most versatile and suc- cessfully eccentric Pendorf. During his career at RFA he has served as president of the Student Association, president of the Class of '67 in his junior year, and vice-president as a sophomore. Three years of varsity hockey, and a year each of jv baseball, varsity baseball, and flag football (as quarterback for the goal-getting Gorks) con- stitute his sports record. An avid student of an- alytic geometry and calculus, Nick has studied at the Copper City Institute of Technology. As RFA's representative to the United Nations Youth Pilgrimage and the honorary mayor of Rome during Youth Week, Nick has proved that he stands out among his classmates and is, therefore, and outstanding senior. One of our busiest girls this year has been Caroline Sykes, the editor of the Forum board. As vice-president of the Red Cross Club, she had charge of the talent show personnel and headed the money-making drives. Because Car- oline is an avid debater, she was chosen to par- ticipate in the Syracuse Citizenship Conference, a speaking contest held at Syracuse University. As “pipe-dream'’ Amy Matthews, she was the leading lady in Head in the Clouds, our senior play. Because of her academic achievements, she was selected for membership in Colgate Seminar. Caroline's broad interests, enthusiasm to work and willingness to give make her an outstanding individual. “Hi, y'all!’’ This little greeting is synonymous with Janie Reid, who came to RFA as a sopho- more from North Carolina. Janie has demon- strated her academic ability by receiving a Na- tional Council of Teachers of English Achieve- ment Award and a Merit Letter of Commenda- tion, and by her selection as a member of both the Honor Society and Colgate Seminar. Last summer Janie spent two months in Bogota, Colombia under the American Field Service pro- gram. Janie has been active in student govern- ment as our class treasurer in both her junior and senior years. Her spirit as a jv cheerleader, her fine performance in the Senior Play, and her con- tributions to the yearbook as a section editor are among the many accomplishments for which Jan- ie will be remembered. Janie’s plans for the future include a major in English at Duke University where she will, no doubt, be a success. In the three years that Larry Zaglaniczny has been at RFA he has demonstrated outstanding leadership ability. As president of the Pep Club and the Block ‘‘R”’ Club, assistant editor of B.S.|. Press, De-O-Wain-Sta photographer, a member of the band, French Club, and A.F.S. Club, Larry has become thoroughly involved in RFA’s stu- dent life. He has also displayed his athletic abili- ty as captain of the cross-country team, and as a member of the track team. Larry’s sincere in- terest in others has placed him high on the list of those to be remembered. Hej Allesammans! | have been most fortunate to have spent a year with you in Rome Free Academy as an American Field Service student. My country, Sweden, is a modern industrial and agricultural country which has _ preserved many of its old customs: such as the maypole dance and the celebration of Santa Lucia Day. The midnight sun, snow-capped mountains, small fishing towns, and the nomadic lives of the Lap Landers are all part of Sweden. The capital of my province, Orebro, has a population of 80,- 000 and is well-known for its shoe industry. Like many Swedes we live in a bungalow during the win- ter months, while we spend our summers trav- eling or at our cottage on the west coast. | have found the American system of public schools to be very different from our Swedish system, in which my father is a byra direktor. In- stead of twelve subjects, | have taken only five here at RFA: English Literature, Russian, Ameri- can History, band, and speech. Our Swedish schools are institutions of learning only, while much of the social life of American teens centers around the school. This year | have been a mem- ber of the American Field Service Club, Library Council, Pep Club, Colgate Seminar, and the De- O-Wain-Sta editorial staff. | admit | was at first surprised by your school spirit, but at my first football game, | too joined in the excitement. When | return to Sweden, | plan to complete gymnasium, (the Swedish equivalent of your high school) and then attend one of our universities. My American family, the Morrises, have been wonderful to me, and their blonde hair and blue eyes have made me feel very much at home. | have had many good times in America: going to parties, dances, and movies. | love to travel, especially in sports cars, and have enjoyed many rides on your country roads. Your western New York countryside is so beautiful! I'm afraid, though, that | have over-indulged myself in hot fudge sundaes, chewing gum, and potato chips. Because of America’s vast expanse, | am amazed at the ability of your country to hold to- gether, and to assimilate the cultures of the many who have made their homes here. | am fascinated by your many achievements, especially in the space program. | have learned a great deal from you during my year as an exchange student in Rome Free Acad- emy; | hope that you have likewise learned from me. Tack ska ni ha allesammans tor ett underbart och spannande ar, ett ar jag alltid kommer ate minnas. “Cicci’’ Thank you all for a wonderful and exciting year—a year | will always remember. cast of characters amy matthews caroline sykes mrs. karen matthews donna bourne chrissie mott janie reid miss edith willis anne bates gretchen elliot linda lincourt lois stuart susan flanders blair hendricks russell simon hugo matthews stephen malone mr. edison matthews aaron jacobs luke jackson arthur daniels julian reed andrew demski HEAD IN THE CLOUDS Using her fertile imagination, Amy Mat- thews, a typical teen-ager, creates a fantas- tic world in which she triumphs over her problems and her snobbish rival, Gretchen. Within the confines of the Matthews’ living room, the audience witnessed Amy’s dreams of being a famous actress pictured in LIFE, class valedictorian, and the first woman Justice of the Supreme Court. These scenes were woven into the story of Amy, her family, and friends through continuously amusing experiences: two be- wildered boy friends, Blaire and Luke, vying to be Amy's escort to the prom; a scoffing brother, Hugo, flashing a camera; a con- cerned teacher, Miss Willis, coming to call an energetic friend, Crissie, always scream- ing, ‘‘Yowie! ; Lois and Julian, who recently have fallen head-over-heels in love; and two extremely confused parents, simply trying to survive. The mass of confusion subsides as Amy brings her head down out of the clouds and comes to some sobering realizations about life. Wild Black With vibrant zest and enthusiasm, the Orange and Black Weekend was initiated with a huge bon-fire in the RFA stadium. The thus-far victorious team and the exhuberant cheerleaders transferred their enthusiasm to the anticipating on-lookers. Following the traditional ceremony of the RFA-UFA specta- cle, the hopeful students headed for the gym for a night of dancing and stomping to the ‘‘Orange and Black Football God.”’ Their dances were answered! Our Black Knights trampled UFA with a smashing score of 53-0. Half-time was highlighted by the coro- nation of the ‘“‘Queen of the Orange,” Carolyn Parry, and her lovely court, Alecia Cin- granelli, Patty Rosch, and Barb Guaspari. On Saturday football fans saw a no-less ex- citing game between our own Pep Club and Key Club, the latter finding the ‘key to vic- tory. To end the spirited Orange and Black Weekend in an aura of grandeur, another dance was held at which Queen Carolyn and her court reigned. Monday afternoon a “mourning” cortege of students and team members bore the coffin of defeated UFA to the East Dominick Street Bridge for its final fiery interment. Kuights . . . and Days Carolyn Parry Fall Weekend Queen . 1966-67 Joanne Grieco + Junior Prom Queen 1966 Another Opening Of Another Show Working in R.F.A.'s annual Talent Show, many students discover that “There's no business like show business.'’ Sponsored by the Red Cross Club, this year’s show was presented on the seventh and the twenty-first of April, to a standing-room only crowd in the Academy auditorium. Benefit performances were presented at the Syracuse Veterans’ Hospital, the Rome State School, and the Rome Home. A portion of the proceeds from the show purchased two console televi- sion sets for the senior citizens of Rome. Like its predecessor, Vaudeville, the Talent Show offered a little something for everyone. The Bickersons brought romance to the stage with their hillbilly wedding, while emcees George Joseph and Jim Sawicki, ever ready with a joke, supplied the humor. Music was the de- partment of ‘the Smuckers, and Robert Siegler with his ‘inspired verses'’ was on the bill for those who prefer a more intellectual mood. Backstage activity was a continuous melodrama as the whip-cracking of di- rectors Sue Bara and Kay Nelson was tempered by the benevolent producer Ed Eitches. More than sixty students contributed their individual and collective talents to make this year’s show a glittering suc- cess. Winter Wonderland ’67 A basketball victory over Proctor High School began Winter Weekend '67 at RFA. Success marched on as our Mermen trounced Glens Falls on home ground with a score of 50 to 45. A blinding blizzard on Saturday failed to discourage dauntless artists, who created a steady stream of snowmen between their freezing labors at snow sculpture and the defrosting halls of RFA. The Pep Club, who directed the weekend's activities, provided hot chocolate and cookies for the numb stu- dents who contributed their strength and talents to the interclass competition. The weekend's finale was a dance, fea- turing the Purple Screw and the Galaxies, at which the winning class in the snow sculpture contest was announced. Working with the theme ‘Winter Wonderland’, the Juniors, with their caterpillar, edged out last year's victors, the class of '67. The days of wine and roses ROD af v6 le 7 allt as, ae Ominous reports of a Rome-bound _ bliz- zard from the Middle West worried members of RFA's Class of '68, as January 27 neared, but this year the ‘Western Winds” blew more fa- vorably; and prom night found anxious girls in new gowns and hairdos listening nervously for the sound of a slamming car door or the crunch of snow underfoot. Frequent trips to the mirror to check hair and make-up alternated with que- ries of “Do | look all right?’’ Suddenly the doorbell rang; and there was Prince Charming, muttering under his breath (so as not to forget them) Dad’s last minute in- structions of playing the gallant. There were flowers in his hand for his lady, who appeared at the top of the stairs. His eyes were on her as she deliberately descended, one step at a time. A pause for pictures, and they were off for a magical, memory-filled evening. Members of the junior class worked diligently under the direction of Mrs. Robert Hubbell to transform the bareness of the gym into a vision of “The Days of Wine and Roses. ’ Gabrielle Mattes as queen reigned with her court Barbara Guaspari, Sandy Kolatz, Katrine Sterling, and Carol Surace. of fun and games ...Jd Ended up witha Broken Fiddle Th = Ye , .
