This, the Yearbook for the class of 1962, is a chronicle of the past three years spent in Rome Free Academy. It is, of course, a journey for everyone, but especially for the seniors who will most vividly re- call the time of hysterical happi- ness, and the more somber ones. It will be the Class of 1962 who will take this book from a dusty shelf in a score of years and go through its yellowing pages with a reminiscent smile. “Got my bag and got my reser- vation, spent each dime I could afford. . .” The reservation is our diploma, and this book is our bag and our dimes have been spent on mem- ory-making experiences. “Like a child in wild anticipa- Pp tion—Longin’ to hear that ALL ABOARD!” With one turn of the page, the memories start to roll by — sit back, make yourself comfortable and enjoy: “A Sentimental Journey” CITY OF ROME SPEED LIMIT SUPERINTENDANT LYNDON H. STROUGH A high school career IS a sentimental journey. Probably there have been times when your school life seemed anything but sentimental. As you approach graduation, however, you will be increasingly aware of all that R.F.A. has meant to you that you never can forget. In the years to come you will look back with a degree of nostalgia as you remember the dreams you had, the ideals you nurtured, and the goals you set f or your life. You may never realize them all, but the dreams of youth have a way of becoming realities and the longer you hold to your ideals and your goals the greater will be your achieve- ment. Thus you are just beginning the best part of your senti- mental journey. BOARD OF EDUCATION The students of Rome Free Academy are priviliged to have for advisors a group of citizens as foresighted and capable as the members of the Board of Education. Through dedicated effort they have provided us with the advantages of a modern educational system. We, the Class of 1962, extend our heartfelt thanks to the Board for their keen interest and firm confidence in us. Left to Right: John R. Woods, Eugene C. Roe, Nicholas J. Bush, Russ P. Destito, Robert C. Bidwell, President; Charles H. Edkins, Dr. Frederick K. Reid, Donald W. Fulton, E. Louise Kingsley. CARL S. PAIGE I hope that your three year stop at Rome Free Academy on your “Sentimental Journey” has been both pleasant and profitable to you. As you proceed on your “Journey through Life” may the ideals which you have developed here make your life a more satisfying and rewarding experience. I have enjoyed accom- panying you thus far and wish you Bon Voyage. PRINCIPALS MYRON J. WHITTEMORE al As the years go by, may you so live that you will be most happy and proud to make many sentimental journeys back to the days that you spent at Rome Free Academy. DEDICATION w , 4 The Class of 1962 is proud to dedicate this yearbook to an outstanding faculty member, Mrs. Helen Gillis. Mrs. Gillis’ long-standing popularity is undeniable. Her smile is perpetual and her understanding of all her students genuine except, of course, when someone tries to cancel out part of a binomial. Her interest in every one of her students is so sincere that it does not end at 3:20. Mrs. Gillis is always there after school, helping someone, or making out a college recommendation. Mrs. Gillis is a success in her field, because she has the admiration and respect of her fellow teachers and love of young people. 7 ; Tinley Soap sie: oamrd RETIREMENT Mrs. Esther Copia Mrs. Esther Copia has been with Rome Free Academy for 36 years and has been active in many fields of school endeavor in which her untiring patience and understanding have been an inspira- tion to all who have worked with her. She was, at one time, sponsor of the Knitting Club, in Red Cross, in charge of the Bookstore, in Civil Defense, and on several Advisory Committees for the welfare of students. As a bookkeeping instructor, she was thorough and accurate while treating her students as equals. Mrs. Copia was never too busy to stop and help any student; in return, she can be assured that her students will never be too busy to remember her. Mr. Gerald Bentley Mrs. Jean Jankowski A FAREWELL As these people continue their “Sentimental Journey” through peo} : the years, the class of 1962 offers its best wishes to: Mrs. Jean Jankowski, who has taught English II this past year in R.F.A. When I count three, everybody stand up! Come on kids, how about some school spirit! 40 hin Thomas Kenjarski President SENIOR CLASS HISTORY The Class of 62 began its journey with the election of President Thomas Kenjarski, Vice-President Charles Gardinier, Secretary Roberta Tracy, and Treasurer Bernadette Remick. Our first encounter was the Christ- mas decorations which showed a great deal of imagination. We also held two dances, one of which was our sophomore dress-up dance, “February Fantasy”. In September we checked our bearings and steered forward into our junior year. Our officers included Thomas Kenjarski, Pres- ident; Gerard Weiss, Vice-President; Roberta Tracy, Secretary; and Bernadette Remick, Treasurer. We started things off with a bang by holding a very successful record hop. Sud- denly all was tense as we approached the biggest event of the year, our Junior Prom. On January 27, 1961, our Prom entitled “Manhattan Moods” was held in a beautifully f Seated, Left to Right: Sandra Panasci, Thomas Kenjarski, Bernadette Remick. Standing: Mr. Franklin Pelkey, Mr. James Hayes. Charles Gardinier Vice-President decorated gym. Climaxing our Junior year was the selection of our class rings and the anticipation of our last year at RFA. The final leg of our journey started with the selection of our officers which included President Thomas Kenjarski, Vice-President Charles Gardinier, Secretary Sandra Panasci, and Treasurer Bernadette Remick. Our last year was filled with many activities. The Senior Play, “Onions in the Stew” served as a pleasant interlude in our long journey. We also found time, amidst the hustle and bustle of our busy school routine, to purchase our name cards and get our senior pictures taken for the De-O-Wain-Sta. In addition to all these activities, we staged our Senior Ball, a tremendous climax to our “Sentimental Journey”. As our journey comes to a close with Regents, The Senior Banquet, Baccalaur- eate, and finally, Commencement, we look for- ward to another journey — the journey far into a strange but exciting world. Try Ot Front Row, left to right: Mrs. Weinkauf, Clas¢ Advisor; Barbara Pritchard, President; Carol Jones, Secretary; Peter Zawaly. Vice-President; Douglas Thaler, Treasurer. Two busy years! As flegdling sophomores we spun through a whirl of projects. We elected our officers: Barbara Pritchard, President; Camille Salce, Vice- President; Susan Luizzi, Secretary; John DelPiano, Treasurer. Then we colorfully decorated the school for Christmas. In order to finance our activities through- out the year, we sponsored a record hop. As a climax to our sophomore year, we held our sophomore class dance, the “Snowflake Hop.” Now, as our junior year draws to a close, we are glad to have had our officers — Barbara Pritchard, President; Peter Zawaly, Vice-President; Carol Jones, Secretary; Douglas Thayer, Treasurer — and our ad- visor, Mrs. Weinkauf, lead us through this part of our journey. Our record hop, our gala prom, “Carousel,” and our distinctive class rings leave us with fond memories. ROOM 102 Front Row, Left to Right: D. Arm- srong, A. Baralatti, A. Andriette, S. Ames. D. Coached by George Flood and his assistant, Edmund Weed, the Black Knights started their winning streak by defeating a big, but slow, Mount Pleasant team. R. F. A. won its first contest 13-0, with Nick Esposito gaining 138 yards for Rome. In Rome’s first home game a spirited New Hartford team failed to check Jerry Burlison who scored three of Rome’s four touchdowns. Rome received revenge in its next game for the previous year’s shutout by defeating New Rochelle 34-13 as Fiore De Costy inter- cepted three New Rochelle passes and scored on a fifty-five yard fake pass. Against Auburn, Rome came from behind in the final quarter with Jerry Burlison scoring in the final two minutes of the game to frustrate Auburn’s hope for an upset. Against Proctor, Rome could manage only two touchdowns despite a more than 300 yard ground gaining total. These were, however, enough to out- class the Proctor squad 13-6. A 13-0 victory over Whites- boro clinched the Central Oneida League Championship for Rome. Under rainy, mud-soaked conditions, the Black Knights humbled their traditional rival, U. F. A., 34-7 as the R. F. A. student body braved the weather to spur the team on. In the final game, R. F. A. completed its all-winning J. Sciarillo, G. Scothon, J. Simiele, V. Grieco, A. Pratt, C.
