A high school diploma is a key to the door of opportunity — opportunity for success and a fuller life, for better understanding of the world and its people. You make use of the key only when you have the initiative to turn the key in the lock and the ambition to open the door. May each of you find your heart’s desire beyond the door. LYNDON H. STROUGH Superintendent Board of Education The students of Rome Free Academy are privileged to have a group of citizens as thoughtful and dependable as the members of the Board of Education. Their ded- icated effort to supply us with the modern equipment we utilize day in and day out is deeply appreciated. We, the class of 1961, are grateful for the fine service and for the wonderful educational system that this group has made possible to all of us. Left to Right: Russ Destito, C. Eugene Roe, Nicholas Bush, Charles Edkins, President; Robert Bidwell, Dr. Frederick K. Reid, Donald Fulton.

O, dear Alma Mater, We will honor thee more and more; So teach us to be true to thee, {lma Mater, R.F.A. We, the class of 1961, feel that each line of our school’s Alma Mater represents some phase of life at Rome Free Academy. Therefore, we have chosen our Alma Mater as the theme for the 1961 edition of the De-O-Wain- Sta. We are using these words, written by Mr. John O. Lundblad, former music teacher at R.F.A., to point out the highlights of our senior year. We sincerely hope you will realize our pride in our alma mater and our endeavor to live up to her ideals. Permit us to introduce “SCHOOL SPIRIT.” Since he has meant a lot to us during our years at Rome Free Academy, we have asked him to guide you through this book, the chronicle of our high sche ol careers. ror y yr “ yP WITH TRUTH AND LOYALT

Principals The theme chosen for the 196] yearbook is the Alma Mater. Translated from the Latin, Alma Mater means “foster mother” or “protect- ing mother”. We hope that Rome Free Acad- emy has served you in this capacity during the years you have spent here — that, like a mother, her guidance and inspiration have led you to do your best work. Your Alma Mater takes pride in your achievements. May the experience you have gained in Rome Free Academy help you to attain the high goals to which you aspire. Carl S. Paige As the years pass, you will have many memories of Rome Free Academy. May these memories be pleasant ones, and may you so live and achieve that your Alma Mater will be proud of you. Myron J. Whittemore
